Greetings from Ireland, I watch regularly and really enjoy watching all of your dogs. I too love cavaliers and have a 3 year old male called Cooper. He is my second cavalier. My first little guy only lived to 8 years died of heart disease, I was heart broken after him. As you know they are such little darlings, I waited 3 years before getting another and he certainly fills our home with life. You certainly are so good with your dogs and the love you have for them shines through in the videos. I have been following Sherlocks progress, he is so besotted with you and you with him that I feel he is going to stay with you for his lifetime. Thankyou for sharing your cavaliers. Good to know…tests expensive? My Charlotte is a pet ….16 months old….I’m 62 have had lots of dogs over the years…she is by far the best❣️ I can take her to anyone’s home and she is welcome! So happy to be part of the Cav lovers world🫶🏻😊kim

This is a developing story - I was speaking with some of my breeder friends (some of whom are genetics experts) at the dog show this weekend about it. In a nutshell, it all started in Australia, where the research seemed to show a correlation between certain genes and heart-clear longevity. The results, at least in the opinion of some folks, are not conclusive, but they are encouraging, and there are some groups attempting to confirm them. The AKC Cavalier parent club gave out swabs at the last national specialty, and a coalition of clubs is presently encouraging owners of heart-clear Cavaliers over the age of 8 to do the test. At present, there are no US companies that do the test, so they have to be sent overseas, but that may change if the demand increases. We are all excited at the prospect of having a DNA test for MVD, but it's still an ongoing process. It's also not a definitive indicator; if the Australian results are valid, it will most likely be an indicator of the probability of living a long heart-clear life. But rest assured that those of us who are preservation breeders and have eligible Cavaliers will do the swabs, send them overseas to get results. We're not there yet, but there seems to be a bright light at the end of the tunnel.

Jamba's last show was Westminster, but there is a local AKC show on Long Island in July, and we will be showing him there. My wife's branch of the family was from a little town called Liscarroll in County Cork. The visiting cousin is from the branch that had moved to England years ago, but she moved back to Ireland, and now lives in Limerick.

Here's the recipe for the formula I use: Ingredients: One can of evaporated goat’s milk, undiluted (You can substitute evaporated cow’s milk if you can’t find the goat’s milk.) One cup of full fat yogurt (the fattiest and freshest you can find) 2 raw egg yolks (don’t worry about the raw eggs) 1/3 cup of freshly made, strong liver broth made from boiling a piece of liver in one cup of water and then reducing the water to 1/3. You can substitute fresh beef broth if you just can’t tolerate the smell of liver, but the liver is much better. Don’t eliminate the broth. 1 Tablespoon of Virgin Olive Oil (you can use mayonnaise if you like, but remember it is acid based). Use 2 tablespoons to make this formula for kitties. 1 teaspoon of karo or corn syrup. 1 dropper full of baby vitamin that doesn’t contain iron. Directions: Place it all in a blender, blend then pour into ice cube trays and freeze. Once frozen, store the ice cubes in a plastic bag and take out how many you need for a feeding; thaw and warm to about 100 degrees. It’s good in the freezer for a full year. If you are going to use this for bottle feeding or Adele’s sponge feeding technique, you may need to thin it with a little bit of pedialyte. The advantage of this formula is that it has been formulated to contain 3-4 times the calorie content of breast milk. Mother’s milk has 3-4 calories per cc. This formula has 10-12 calories per cc. The reason for using the evap milk without diluting is to get extra calories, same with the full fat yogurt and the olive oil. It is all about calories. Your puppy will gain weight on this formula beginning about 48 hours after beginning to feed the formula. Feed the puppy one cc (a ml is identical to a cc) of formula for every ounce of body weight every 3-4 hours or when crying from hunger. Self-regulated bottle feeders may eat more at every feeding and want to eat less often. This is fine too.
