    The original song also had things that people don't remember apart from the song itself referencing it, it hasn't all got to be world changing events, its just events that have happened and had an impact when they did happen

    Right? Like the original 100% had just pop culture stuff in it. Like The King and I, (Marlon) Brando and more. =/ People just want the depressing stuff and things like that in this song? yeah FOB could have just simply made it all depressing as hell, but that's not the point and never was

    When people do these type of reaction video's they should also rewatch the original too. I won't go through all the references but the original also mentions some things that aren't world changing events. Studebaker, Davy Crockett, Peter Pan, Hula hoops, just some examples and I wouldn't really call all those important. I mean the original ends about talking about the "cola wars". As for the RDJ and Iron Man lines, I believe they are meant to represent that he was the start of the whole MCU, one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. I will probably never have another movie theatre experience like Endgame.

    I really think people have to take a serious look at this being Fall Out Boys own version of the song. It DOES NOT have to follow the same structure, rhyme scheme, or topics as the original. I can respect people who don’t like, that’s okay. What annoys me is separating the two, it’s no different then two adaptations of the same book, video game or comic. Each are going to be their own product and should be judged accordingly.

    Robert Downey Iron Man was a cultural phenomenon it set off the whole superhero genre. (MCU)

    I went to the original video. I'm 60. They nailed the lyrics. He hit all the big events. I think it's brilliant. Billy Joel is an icon. I was in highschool when "Only the Good Die Young" was released. I'll keep watching your vids. Thanks.

    Grew up with the original and love the new one. Pretty sure you are not 60 years old so quit acting like you lived through every event of the original

    If anything he would have only lived through the final verse of the original. And while i appreciate the effort, this version could have been executed better.

  • @anthonyanderson9303
    @anthonyanderson93036 ай бұрын

    I felt like the execution could have been better. For one, the lack of chronological order just throws me. Part of what made the original so brilliant was that it was like an audtio timestamp through time. Also, the way BJ broke down the verses, the end of the 3rd verse is JFK's assassination and after that the time goes faster cuz as BJ explained, the innocence of the era died after that and time just sped along. I think a more effective way to mirror the original song would have been the first 3 verses covered the rest of 1989 (starting with the fall of the Berlin wall) and ending with 9/11 (World Trade Blown Away, what more do I have to say?). Mainly because like JFK's assassination, 9/11 is the major event that defines our generation. From that point on, verse 4 would then match the chaotic pace of the 4th verse of the original. Also...not sure how you make a song like this a not mention Covid in some way...like that's impossible. I get you can't squeeze everything in but c'mon now. When future generations look back on this generation, that's literally the first thing that will be brought up.

    Completely agree. Lyrics could’ve been way better and there was absolutely no mention of Covid 19 whatsoever. Possibly the most impactful world event of the decade.

    They didn’t need to mention COVID. Everybody in the world is not going to forget COVID for a long time. Some of these other events needed the spotlight shined on them a bit more. Like how many people outside of Japan and political scientists really paid attention to the assassination of Shinzo Abe?

  • @MrSilnev

    @@zachm2331 They didn't have to mention it but at the same time they cut the fifth verse from the song and drop the run time by about 30 seconds and I'm not really sure why. The original had a flow that built and built, as more events get mentioned the singer gets more emotional. The Fallout Boy version lacks that punch and it just sort of has the same tone throughout the song.

    The way I see it is that the original was really negative, meaning it focused on all the bad stuff that’s happened in all those years, it was hard for some to play because of the that, one of those people being my mom, she dosnt listen to it because it makes her sad. And sure it might have been the point of the song maybe to put focus on those events and it does, but it leaves a sad impression on the listener. The new cover deals with a lot of different parts of the 30-40 years that went by, it dosnt try and sugar coat the bad stuff but it dosnt leave the listeners sad after hearing it. Also another difference is how in the original Billy sings how “We tried to fight it” and in the new one it’s “We’re trying to fight it” Once again more positive in how alot of bad stuff has happened but we’re trying to better ourselfs and the world around us, slowly. All I’m saying is for some they’d rather play the cover and reminisce with some joy then play the original and be left sad. Good video tho, always good to see different points of view even if I do disagree on some points.

    The lack of chronological order & some weird rhyming/spacing (I guess…brain’s failing me) are the main issues for me. Michael Jackson dies? Weirdly staccato. Venus & Serena…umm. I think “Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man” had impressive flow, especially for what could be the strangest line. I think it’s enjoyable enough. Unnecessary., though. I graduated high school in ‘89 & I love the original, but I don’t give a fuck about Billy Joel in general & I’d listen to Patrick all day, every day, for the rest of time. I actually was just going to comment on, ask about, whatever, your shirt. I was excited to see Creepshow, but I realized movie or show is more likely than band. 🙄

    kinda wish they'd added to the original by saying something like "Palestine still occupied." Also, as a 29 year old, I love the original and have done since before this cover, but there are so many things in it that I have no clue about, no reference, whereas I prefer the FOB vocals, song and lyrics. Yes the lyrics because I know them but also I think the song just sounds better. I'm also a Brit so that probably changes things in terms of being aware of some US centric news before I was born in regards to the original. I also agree that the Venus and Serena thing is out of place. Also I feel like they tried to be more varied in a good way, like for you Twilight may not have been as big but for people my age it was the ONLY thing for years before we were old enough to pay attention to world events, and I wasn't even a big fan, I just read the books and thought okay sure. But it was everything for years to people my age. You also didn't know Cambridge Analytica like how I don't know a lot of references from the original. You see what I mean? I think it's just very varied and I can't speak on the original in that regard as I wasn't there for those events, as much as I love the song.
