An Evening with Ta-Nehisi Coates | JCCSF

The Jenerosity Foundation Lecture
With Lateefah Simon
Join us for a conversation with one of the most influential black intellectuals of his generation, Ta-Nehisi Coates. “The Case for Reparations,” his George Polk Award-winning cover story on slavery and race for The Atlantic, was one of the most talked-about pieces of nonfiction in recent memory. Between the World and Me, an exploration of racial history written to his young son, was awarded the National Book Award and hailed by Toni Morrison as “required reading.” Coates is also the author of The Beautiful Struggle, a memoir of growing up in Baltimore during the age of crack, the Marvel comic book series Black Panther and Captain America and the essay collection We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy, Coates’ response to the 2016 presidential election and its ramifications on American society. Coates appears in conversation with Lateefah Simon, President of Akonadi Foundation.
Made possible through the generous support of The Jenerosity Foundation.

I loved her energy, we are such a jaded society that do not appreciate people giving each other their roses while they are here. Thank you Lateefah Simon.

She’s an awesome interviewer. She did her homework and her interest and admiration seems genuine. I feel like I’m watching two smart cousins have a discussion.

@Nunsuch you had the space, and opportunity to speak about anything he writes about, espouses or stands for, but what racist delusional coward like you will do is under the cover of anonymity, make assumptions based solely on ignorance, and manufactured narratives that dopes like you spew all over the net..... you all say it, so it must be hard wired into your brains.....everything except what you said about his inspiration part, which was his friend, and he was shot buy a black cop, and the elected officials were blacks, was absolutely incorrect ... so the question begs to be answered...do you believe we think people who are racist like you, are people who have advantages based off holding the competition back, will have anything non delusional , non pathological, and non manufactured, to say that stands firmly against the truth? false narratives, lies, fear, and insecurity are the pillars of racism.... ta naheesi never said whites were evil....you said he said it, which was more than a mistake, and certifies s to your that none of you will even watch the video, and if you do, try and search point by point, for ways to negate or neutralize the truth, or deflect from it...i bet your dumb ass was too stupid to watch the video and learn something...you are more comfortable with talking shit about him, than discussing what he saying..... and im guessing, you feel like that has always worked in the minds of delusionals like yourself and other ignorant... first off, every entity, institution, system in this country is under the direct control of whites without exception, and have never moved to dismantle racism, or do things that will aid blacks...not even obama, as the president and a black man, could do shit, and was just the elected black face on the machinery of white supremacy... i mean what the fuck is wrong with people like you? you know in order for black cops to exist on any police force, they have to subscribe to the tenants of white supremacy to prove they are down and one of them, the collective......this is the only conceivable way a black can be racist....is working to maintain status quo, like all cops do... same for elected black officials.....they have to dance to the tune too....ill bet you nor anybody else can name a time any black official ever stood against status quo , or ever did anything to ever help blacks..you would be hard pressed to show me something any black politician said when they were running for office, that specifically even addressed blacks....ws will very seldom not eliminate people or circumstances that threaten status quo...after 400 years of assassinating and marginalizing black leaders, and burning down black towns , and passing failed legislation after failed more legislation, its evident, that whites have no intention of giving up their privilege, no matter what it costs blacks, and you mopes have deluded yourselves all this time into ignoring the cost to others, as long as you keep your unearned advantage, on blacks who are said, by racist, ill-equipped to be able to compete with whites anyway....lol...shit if i was whites i would be lying about that shit too....lol and you all know this stuff...and you know we know it....so why come on public forums just to expose the weakness and feebleness of your self, and all that you stand for all these years...that whites have done all this to blacks, for 400 years this year, to lock blacks out of a society, the sacrificed greatly to finance, build, maintain and fight for, because whites are afraid to compete with blacks, so they fashioned racism, to keep whites competing only with whites, so whites always can to win... i said it before and ill say it again...racist are dopes...present company included

What Ta Nehisi spoke about in the last question is essentially the first episode of The Boondocks. All them rich folks laughed and smiled at Huey as he combated the powers that be, knowing damn well he had no real impact

Great conversation, however, the interviewer needs to let the interviewee do most of the talking, as opposed to showing the interviewee how smart or prepared you are.
