An evening with StaffPad

There's not all that much to do whilst we're all staying home during lockdown... so why not join DWH for a sunny evening (and a bottle of wine!) and write a track in StaffPad. Listen to the finished result at: 3:12:48, or watch it come together over the course of the evening. Grab some wine, and follow along... or, perhaps it's a good video to fall to sleep to (much more likely!)

This is great. I've been a casual musician for almost two decades but sadly never really wrote anything. About 4 years ago I bought a Surface Pro 4 largely because of the allure of Staffpad. I never quite got the hang of it, and even when occasionally revisiting, I'd put it down and give up. I had kind of assumed Staffpad had gone under since it had felt like almost 2 years of no updates, but this new update has really pulled me in (and frankly I was pleasantly shocked it arrived!). Frankly the performance increase alone has made it so much easier to use, and it's been a delight to work out harmonic ideas on the page, and with the team's promise that the rebuild will make it easier to apply future updates, I'm excited to see what's to come. The resurgence of videos on this channel has been great too, it gives me a lot of confidence that the product is being pushed and that support will continue. Glad that this is now available on iPad to increase your audience, too. In starting to try to actively focus on composition, I've been struggling to think about how to approach the process as a whole, and just yesterday was thinking that I need some perspective on how folks approach this. Hearing such a thorough and *vocalized* demonstration of how someone builds an idea (on my platform of choice, no less) has been great, and close observation of even just a few minutes of this gave me a lot of insight on how the program can best be used (though I'm slightly envious of some of the iPadOS features!). Keep up the good work, and congrats on the relaunch. Can't wait for further optimization over the next few months. Stay safe and healthy.

Staffpad is truly remarkable software. I've invested so much in orchestral VSTs over the years but do not like how tedious it is to work in a DAW. This program has changed the way I think about making music digitally. Also, this song is so badass. 007 would be proud!

Staff Pad has always been strong. As soon as I learned of it I understood it's potential as a game changer for us composers who still use paper and pencil. Now, with ease of access to the finest of sample libraries, one may argue it's no big deal. Although, that person will lose the argument. It's humbling to see a composer's process, but of course it's done for such good reason. I love this software. PS - Every person who's significant other is a composer should watch this for at least twenty-minutes:)

This was incredible, phenomenal, splendiferous, and outrageously fantastically brilliant! The app is very pricey but worth it because as I listened to the instruments, they’re not some cheap imitation. They are REAL SYMPHONIC INSTRUMENTS!!! I mean goodness! It costs $89.99. I can rewrite some hymns in my creative way. I love that you can even print it out either as a full score or parts. This can easily be used for small musical groups. Thank you staffpad! I have it for a few days and the recognition works very well for me and I find it very easy to learn. BUUUUT I only need it for one single instrument. And there is a looooot of wasted screen space with the one single line scrolling horizontally to the right. I understand that this layout makes sense for a whole orchestra like in this video. But I would find navigation easier if there was a "vertical mode" with line breaks and scrolling up & down...

@@edwardm9975 Yeah but the amount of work StaffPad put into each device is completely different. It’s not like they programmed it once for Apple and then copy pasted it to windows…. They completely had to do it over to have it work for the different platform. Why should that be free? Do you have any idea how software development works?

This is a literal masterclass. And it's bringing back my days as a comp student in college. My professor recommended exactly the approach you have here, of loosely sketching in literal scribbles to get the structure of the thing nailed down. As a noob to SP, it would be nice though if you could show on screen the shortcuts you're using, e.g., the repeats and the finger gestures to copy/paste etc.

Yeah, as mentioned below, I’ve also had problems with writing in the accidentals, esp. the natural. Also have had some quirky experiences with the hairpins! Sometimes they close down the entire program when I touch the pen to the screen, sometimes they just turn into long long lines that stretch off the left side of the page. Also entering rehearsal numbers via “text” past “9” results in a tempo notation selection line! Can’t figure out how to get around that one. ANYWAY, This vid is GREAT, no question! MORE please! 😢

¡Impresionantemente cierto! (And that's mainly what's it about!) Alexander.

Great video - it's helpful to see how you sketch things out from an idea - and I'd just like to say what a fabulous app Staffpad is. I travel a lot, and Staffpad has transformed the way I compose. When I'm on a plane, or at a hotel, all I need is my iPad. I've even been sitting in hotel restaurant, having breakfast whilst scribbling away. I haven't opened Cubase in weeks. Just one thing - you need to give better information on the third party sample libraries - especially what articulations are included and the way you trigger them from the notation, and you need to put this info on your website too, as I know several people who were reluctant to buy the app without knowing the details. But this app of yours is a thing of beauty.

@@FreakieFan I'm so glad they have. I'm very curious in giving this impressive software a try! This video was really inspiring for me and helped illustrate an incredible amount of things I was interested to know about, in such detail! I have to say I'm tempted in leaving my DAW of choice and doing the transition to Staffpad!! Thanks for letting us know about the update! Alexander.

How do you add polyrhythms when writing for drums? I want to have 2 separate stems one up on the right side and the other straight down on the left. That way I can have the subdivisions of the rhythms fit into one measure. It doesn't seem to want to work with polyrhythms within one measure for some reason. The reason why I ask you is that I'm currently transcribing drums and percussion score to play along with my brother this Christmas. If you're interested I could send you my score of what I've got so far. There's a multi-percussion passage where I simultaneously play the jingle bells in my left hand while playing the glockenspiel in my right.

Hi, I desperately need your help. I purchased from the Staffpad store several collections like Berlin strings, Voxos (epic virtual choirs) ets. I used it for over a year, and today suddenly it all disappeared from my Staffpad app. I am lost... what would be the reason for this messy situation? Can you give me some advice?

Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us! I learned a lot and I can see the importance of a software such as Staffpad for whoever needs to compose orchestral music. I can't imagine how much work, effort and countless hours have been put to make such an amazing tool available for everyone. But... ...I'm tempted to ask: Do you have plans for Video Playback in-app? It would be fantastic being able to work for Film in sync with Staffpad! Thanks again, Alexander.

even how nice it is, as it is.. in this video (i hope it's fixed), the horns are very sloppy in timing (is it because the rip articulation is a fixed length and therefore pushed the rest further away in timing?). If you listen you hear the piano on time, and the horns are just slightly behind.

Im getting the feeling that choral composers are not welcome in the Staffpad family… On IOS there is no option to copy and paste lyrics, meaning I have to write lyrics for all voices separately, and its not possible to get the dynamics above the staff. I wouldnt buy it if i knew, but i did and there is no refund..
