An Evening With Della Reese (Atlanta 2004)

This hour-long one-on-one interview program provided a rare and insightful look into the life of legendary actress, minister and entertainer, Della Reese. Taped in Atlanta on June 18, 2004, in front of a live audience, Reese was interviewed by actress Lorraine Toussaint, former star of the television series Any Day Now.
From singing to acting to preaching at her church, Understanding Principles for Better Living, Reese’s career has been one worthy of celebrating. From her childhood in Detroit to singing with Mahalia Jackson and becoming the first black woman to host her own TV show, Della, to her hugely successful program Touched By An Angel, Reese has amazed audiences for six decades. A gospel singer, an actress, a minister, Della Reese is above all, an icon.
An Evening With Della Reese featured seldom seen historic footage of Reese's early career. Taped in front of a live audience at Georgia Public Broadcasting, An Evening With Della Reese marked the first time The HistoryMakers took their signature An Evening With... series on the road. With a sold-out audience of three hundred, An Evening With Della Reese swept the audience away.

I want to thank everyone involved in putting this program together originally and for whoever has posted this here. Thanks to Lorraine Toussaint for so elegantly hosting the evening. Della Reese was a door opener (that’s a description I got from this program) and a life changer. She made life better for many people, and I am one of them. I was one of her Godchildren. I miss sitting with her. I miss the gentleness of holding her hand. But am blessed to hearing and feeling her talking to me all the time.

If Miss Reese didn’t have such a magnificent career as a singer she most assuredly could have been a legendary comedian. This story, was mostly heavy and she managed to tell it with such humor. Who couldn’t love her ? ❤️❤️ RIP.

"the hamburger story", as I thought about it, with her telling it, nearly brought me to tears....because I could see her experiencing this sort of brutal racism, in my mind's eye. I felt her pain...but I also saw her spirit and strength, as she spoke about the man who 'made a way out of no way' for her (Sullivan). And one of the many things I love about my people, is how we NEVER forget an extended hand to help us get to the next "whatever". Your race doesn't matter to us..your heart does. Della Reese is one of the all time great black entertainers, because she was a literal pioneer, in Vegas and so many other places. There are no performers named, Phyllis Hyman, or Rachelle Ferrell or Anita Baker, had there not been women like Mrs Reese, Sarah Vaughn and Lena Horne.

I absolutely love Della to death, I really do, especially in Harlem nights, I just love all of her acting gigs, but I never really could feel her, as a singer, I guess because I'm a singer, and I grew up in the church too, I just never was attracted to her, being vocal performer, verses a theatrical, and movie performer, sorry ijs, however, is she would have chosen jazz, and only jazz, then I think her name would have been much higher, in the music industry, because it Billie Holiday's voice, can be called one of the best ever, then Della definitely could have been, has she done jazz songs, (she's another one I don't understand, Billie Holiday, who I also love hearing about, I love the movie, I love her interviews and all of that, but her voice, sound like there's two rats and her throat, and they're scratching each other to get out, to me, and I couldn't stand, the way she treated other people, and how filthy her mouth was, like one-time Maya Angelou, try to sing old blue songs, and Lady Nodd, I mean Lady Day,herself was in the audience, and Adam nowhere but no reason at all, she started screaming at Maya, saying get off the stage you know singing b****, you sound like my mother, like she was crazy as hell, and goodness knows she couldn't carry a tune, if it was in a bucket, as far as I am concerned, now you might feel totally different about her, you might feel asthough she is the best voice of all time, or one of the best, to me she's no where near one of, or could've been, even close, to anybody's best voice,if you think of Billie Holiday, is Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, or Whitney Houston, which you would have to, to say she's one of the best voices of all time, then I'm not going to argue with the impaired, because you have to be in the blind and deaf School of America, and I also happen to be a nurse, so I truly do understand, where you're coming from) but jokes aside, God knows, that I absolutely love this woman, and have always had, mad love & respect for her, all my life, and I always will, & even if I felt as though she wasn't a great, (or strong I think it's the better word, because I really think she would have made a great jazz singer) singer, I wouldn't've cared, she wants to sing, she did have a fanbase, other people liked her, let her sing, that wouldn't stop me from going and seeing her, and supporting her, if I was around back when she was, meaning in the 50s) when it came to rhythm and blues, or pop, however is even if she didn't have someone, that was honest enough with her, to transition over to Jazz, I still would support her career 💯%, and had I been around back then, I would have went to herself, just because I love her, she's right up there with the way I feel about Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, and Tina Turner, are my all three favorites, but they're not the only people, I like hearing, or the only people who I have mad respect for, in the business. Her and Redd were meant to be best friends, they just complimented each other's work, when they were acting together, like two shoes, it just fits, as though they should've really always beetogether, when it came to acting(I don't understand why she wasn't in Sanford and Son, and she could have played the role of Elizabeth, Fred's wife, and Esther's sister, and they could have wrote it with her being alive, instead of her being his widow), such as Grammy award-winning music artist, are, when it comes to sticking to their producers, as a matter of fact, a lot of the arguing that they did in the movie, Harlem nights, what met Eddie Murphy, write the sick time for them, the "Royal Family", because when they were filming the movie, they had him on his knees laughing, in their trailer, because they truly, cannot stop nagging, and fighting with each other, like two old couples, and they were dead serious, and this was them all the time, but at the same time everyone knew, how much they loved and cared about each other, strictly as friends like brother and sister, and with that, Eddie was like, this is beyond funny, y'all got to do some more stuff together, and that's why he wrote The pilot, for the sitcom, Royal family for them, sadly Red Foxx would die, after just 3 months of filming together. 😦😥
