An Equal Playing Field | TakePart

US forward Christen Press is living her dreams and inspiring a new generation of soccer players in the Women’s World Cup. But like many of the game’s greatest female players, she’s faced a circuitous road to success and a sustainable career in the sport she loves.
On July 5th, 2015, the U.S. Women's National Team won the World Cup in front of a record television audience.

Press is so intelligent and sincere. Sometimes i hear players say stuff like this, and it sounds really contrived...this seemed genuinely insightful. She said a few things i've not really hear other players say/address.

And almost 20 years to the day she attended the 1999 World Cup final, Christen scores a goal today against England (July 2, 2019), to help push the USWNT to another World Cup final 🤘👍😮 Absolutely surreal and awesome!!!

The league is going nowhere without investments. Women's soccer has so much potential. Especially in the U.S., where soccer is growing exponentially and only has room to grow. I really want to see the growth of women's soccer leagues not just in the U.S., but around the world. It's not a question of whether or not the level of play is entertaining enough and high enough because it is. Women's soccer is great. People just really need to give it a go in watching it and there needs to be more TV deals. The problem is nobody knows about the league.

Soccer Mad FOX Sports will be televising some of the women's professional matches. The 10-game Victory Tour will help to keep women's soccer "...in the national conversation..." for a number of months leading up to the Olympics in Rio next summer and then who knows? I'm trying to get the San Diego City Council members to see the wisdom in building a next generation multi-purpose stadium like the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, but with at least TWO portable Bermuda grass fields. This would add maximum versatility to the equation in such a way so that NFL football and professional soccer can coexist amicably AND profitably within the same stadium. This variation would make it possible for both sports to schedule games as close as two days apart from each other without inconveniencing either team.

It's tough. Without TV revenue is almost impossible to run a profitable national sports league. Hopefully Fox, ESPN, or NBC takes a chance on NWSL next year.

I have season tickets to the Utah Royals but watching the away games are extremely hard ESPN has the world wide rights but I still can't watch because they don't show the game on TV for some reason. Last week I went to 3 different sports pubs and they have expensive satellites and they could not get the game for me.

This is why I support the NWSL as much as possible. I go to matches, watch as many as possible (Yahoo Sports streams tons of matches). watch highlights and subscribe to women's soccer related KZread channels. Bottom line is, NWSL puts a great product on the field, exciting matches, with the best players in the world.

It is a problem for all team sports where after college, and some cases high school, athletes do not have a good option to keep playing. I played D1 in the 80s and played a few years in semi pro leagues where referees would not show up, sometimes a team would not show up, and the fields were horrible. So it was a culture shock going from college where the fields were great and everything was organized. After getting injured too many times (sometimes when the ball was 50 yards away) I moved into tennis and golf. I knew some very talented soccer players back then who would have been pro level but there was no pro league and Europe only wanted our goalies.

imateapot51 I think the USWNT has finally succeeded in priming the pump of national interest to the point where it will not go dry again. There are enough young girls genuinely interested in the sport now and enough good coaches for them as well. I'm 62 and you couldn't pay me to watch soccer just 7 years ago. All of that changed overnight when I decided to watch the USWNT play in the 2008 Olympics. I watched all of their matches at least twice and my eyes were finally opened to what is referred to as "The Beautiful Game"

It's kind of like the WNBA, no one watches. I'm not sure how it survives. I just watched France vs Germany yesterday in Montreal in the Quarters of the World Cup and it was one of the most exciting matches I've seen in ages. Women's tennis draws viewers and is more exciting than men's, IMO. As a proud Canadian, I wish Christen luck, but not too much luck as I remember the 2012 Olympic semi where Canada was jobbed against the Americans. I'd like nothing better than a US-Canada final.

Even though there wasn't a final between the USA & Canada were you glad the game was in Canada? That game was amazing, unbelievable and I kept scaring my dog by screaming at the tv at each goal and then apologizing to her. Canada is a great county. -a New Yorker

Novella Cinephile I thought there was great atmosphere at almost all the games here in Canada and while our team had a 7 min brain cramp that led to 2 goals and the end of the tourney, I think it was a big success nonetheless. Congrats to the Americans. They are most deserving, but I was hoping for a bit more competitive match.

    It is a huge battle for equality! The BIGGER thing, in this same conversation, is the Nations responsibility to get that 1 more state to ratify sex equality! When we do, it can be added to our Constitution as an amendment! THAT IS THE GOAL!! Getting that accomplished will help Our Women to get the pay & benefits they deserve in all employment positions! And it REALLY is the time to get that accomplished! We are the Nation that should be leading the way, as a light for the world, for sex equality! Every person can go to EqualRightsAmendment.org and check your state status! It will give you the leaders to contact as well!! This IS A BIG DEAL!! Also, if we get #TulsiGabbard voted as Our POTUS, then I have NO DOUBT that this will FINALLY get accomplished!!!!! #Alaska #AKLeg #akpol #Arizona #azpol #azpolitics #azleg #Arkansas #arpx #arleg #California #CALeg #capolitics #Colorado #COPolitics #coleg #Connecticut #ctpolitcs #ctleg#copols #Delaware #politicsDE #netDE #DistrictofColumbia #DCision14 #Florida #sayfie #Georgia #gapol #gapolitics #Hawaii #HInews #HIleg #Idaho #IDpol #idleg #Illinois #twill #Indiana #INlegis #Iowa #iapol #iacaucus #iapolitics #Kansas #ksleg #Kentucky #kyga #kypol #Louisiana #lalege #Maine #mepolitics #meleg #Maryland #MdPolitics #mdpol #mdleg #Massachusetts #mapoli #Michigan #MIpol #milegislature #mileg #mipolitics #Minnesota #mnleg #stribpol #Mississippi #MSLeg #Missouri #MOLeg #Mohouse #mosenate #Montana #mtpol #mtleg #Nebraska #nepol #neleg #unicam #Nevada #nvpol #Nvleg #wematter #NewHampshire #nhpolitics #nhleg #FITN #NewJersey #NJLeg #njpolitics #NewMexico #nmpol #nmleg #NewYork #NYPol #nypolitics #NorthCarolina #NCPol #ncga #ncleg #NorthDakota #ndpol #ndleg #Ohio #ohpol #ohleg #Oklahoma #okpoli #okpol #okpolitics #okleg #Oregon #orpol #orleg #Pennsylvania #papolitics #pasenate #pahouse #papoli #RhodeIsland #ripolitics #SouthCarolina #SCTweets #scpol #scleg #SouthDakota #SDleg #SDsen #Tennessee #tnleg #tnpolitics #tnpol #tnhouse #tnsenate #VOLS #Texas #txlege #txpoli #Utah #UTpol #utleg #Vermont #vtpoli #vtleg #vt #Virginia #VApol #vagov #vaga2014 #vahouse #vasenate #Washington #waleg #waelex #WestVirginia #wvpol #wvleg #wvlegis #Wisconsin #wipolitics #Wyoming #WYLegis #wyleg

Foudy said, Just look at Portland..... Respectively, is Portland supposed to mean something to the rest of the USA? Being a Midwesterner/Southerner many things come to mind when Portland is mentioned, unfortunately woman's soccer is not anywhere on the top list of items. Here is an idea, get rid of all the hoopla attached to Women's Soccer, watch a fan base grow. Even more so today with all that is happening, people want to go watch sports to relax and get away from the worlds complications, not pay for a ticket and be force fed social and political ideas. Professional sports need to wake up or risk losing a huge part of their fan base... just an idea
