An Epidemic: A lack of Financial Literacy | Harsimran Chohan | TEDxSacredHeartSchoolsAtherton

My parents weren't going to be there for me every time I needed to make a financial decision, and I had to find a way to learn about this stuff fast! How are students supposed to learn about foreign terminology commonly found in financial documents as well as what consequences their action, inaction, or lack of financial understanding may result in? Harsimran Chohan is a junior at Sacred Heart Preparatory (SHP) in Atherton. She is active within her school community and holds leadership positions on the Model UN Team, SHP Connections Committee, and Global Researching & Consultation (GRC) Program. Outside of school, Harsimran is training as a student pilot, works as a paddle-boarding/kayaking instructor, and plays club field hockey. Harsimran has always been interested in the arts participating in school plays and a Bhangra (Indian dance) group since kindergarten. She aspires to pursue a career in law or psychology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

So similar story. My father used to see the business channels and i use to think i will get to know this once i grow young. But here being 24 yrs of age i knew nothing about finances. Started learning about it in march last year and i thankfully know much more than my peers(even banker friends) and even my parents.

I agree. I am trying to teach this via KZread. My main audience are high schoolers, followed by 20 something. She put an 8 wk course together but it takes longer. I wish I could contact her to get her thoughts.

The title is great or true. We need to change the school education. I am trying but I think the ones to make the change are the children and even their hands are tied. Knowing your native language means you understand the words but not the meaning, so "foreign" was a wise choice of words. My increased my level in a foreign language when I included financial education in my studies.
