An Economist Won The Lottery 14 Times By Buying Every Number Combination | Planet Money | NPR

Buying a lottery ticket is a bad deal. The odds are against you, even with a giant pot. But one guy figured out how to flip the odds in his favor... fourteen times.
In the 1950s, Stefan Mandel won the Romanian lottery twice.
And then he took his earnings, packed his bags and settled in Australia, where he won the lottery twelve more times. Yes, you read that correctly. Twelve.
So, how'd this math whiz beat the system?

Its impossible to fool all of the people all of the time...only takes 1 person to figure out exactly what is going on....your an idiot if you think that nobody knows that the dollar is being destroyed intentionally...and using fake identities to do it...and of course the purpose of it is so they can create a state of emergency and use that as the reason to impose absolute power under the guise of being done for the best interests of the people...which of course is total bullshit...proof of what has been/is being/going to be done can not be destroyed with everything else...that has been made impossible a long time ago...you are acting like it's not completely obvious that the same exact people responsible for all fake news and fake events are the ones that are letting the world know about it themselves...and you don't do shit like that unless you feel that you will get away with it...but we are aware of how deep the deceptions go and from the bottom up are involved....from local police to the very top...you can't fake news and events without the help of the local government...that is not government...the federal government is going to use this to enact a federal state of emergency...FEMA...money is already fake...that only leaves 1 other possible reason to do it...makes no sense to let everyone know what you have been doing (but not really because it's fake news) if you're goal is that of the fake international bankers...and we know about the many fake identities

It's a bit misleading to imply Mandel *lives* on a tropical island. He's *stuck* on Vanuatu because the securities authority in Israel convicted him in absentia of a not filing a prospectus and of fleeing from custody. The first charge is true, but it was selective prosecution by all accounts. The second charge is probably made up, since he voluntarily returned to Israel to be interrogated and then they claimed he tried to escape from their offices when according to him they told him he was not under arrest and he walked out to get lunch.

Usually the applicable phrase is: “The lottery is a tax on people who don’t understand mathematics.” But in Stephan’s case the phrase was: “The lottery can be a windfall for those who understand mathematics well enough to guarantee a win.” Of course he wasn’t *guaranteed* a win in Romania, and in Virginia there was a real chance that he could end up splitting the pot with several other winners (and also there was a real chance that the state of Virginia would refuse to pay and the courts would back them up).

  • @jpe1

Donovan Murphy I have no knowledge of Australian taxation rules, but in the US lottery winnings are typically exempt from state taxes in the state where the lottery is held; for example, in Pennsylvania a PA resident who won in the PA state lottery would not be subject to PA income tax, only Federal tax. Not the best example because In 2016 PA started taxing lottery winnings, but until 2016 winnings were exempt from PA taxes. If the federal government were to run a nationwide lottery the winnings would presumably be tax free.

There’s something very fishy about this whole story. I’ve researched and every article I’ve found on the topic just leads you on a trail of other vague articles from which they copied, always leading back to some dodgy website proporting to give tips and strategies on how to win the lottery. I can’t find anything solid on this guy. The facts presented in this video do not, in my opinion, have a solid grounding until you provide your resources. Please provide a link to the article from which you most likely got every detail from.

Massachusetts used to have a lottery game with a "push down" feature, meaning that if no one won the big prize for a long time, they redistributed a lot of that money to the lesser prizes. Well it turns out that there are a bunch of people in Mass. who are good at math, so whenever the "push down" feature happened, ticket sales skyrocketed and a few key players/"investors" got rich. The game has since been terminated. I think they now have a law limiting individuals to purchase not more than 10,000 tickets for any draw.

combinatorial condensation is not a real thing. I like how they just gloss over that like oh yeah he figured out how to predict the first 5 numbers but then he just stopped using that for some reason. If the Romanian lottery is like the other lotteries (as implied) it’s not possible to the predict numbers no matter how many math papers you read. Also if you predicted 5 of the 6 numbers the number of combinations would be much less than 1000.

I missed how exactly this scheme worked. Is it just that, when the prize pot for a lottery gets big enough, the expected return on any ticket for that draw becomes positive? Then you'd be able to buy enough tickets to cover all the possible number combinations, such that the expected return becomes guaranteed (assuming no split pot)?

Idea to bypass an "nobody can buy every combination of numbers" law: Buy every combination of lottery tickets except 1 2 3 4 5 6. Even if that number got picked, you'd barely make anything anyways because so many people pick those numbers that it'd be split between several thousand people.

We have a dog track here and for all the races of the night if you picked the exact 1st 2nd and 3rd for (i think it was for all races of the night) you would win 25k so one couple decided to pay something like 12k to cover every single combination guaranteeing a win. What they did not take into account what ended up happening is 3 other people also getting it right and having to split the money.

This is impossible, the only way all the tickets could be bought and turn a profit is if the prize money is more than all the tickets bought, and if that were the case than the lottery wouldn’t be making any money for the sellers. This means that the lottery wouldn’t be able to sustain its self. Lottery’s only can give the “JACKPOT OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS!” If the collective people spend more than one million dollars before that prize is won. I’m going to need to see some facts before I’ll believe this.

May 5, 2021 - This dude Stefan cracked the lottery back in the 90's. There were less number combinations and like, the video said Stefan did not buy all the number combinations just enough to win the 2nd, 3rd prizes and so on. It could not happen in 2021 because customers can no longer print their own tickets and the number combinations are now in the millions.

@@fiannafailgalway8446 Oh, yes, that makes more sense now. I suppose that since it was such a complex mathematical process, trying to make some laws against it would have been tricky. I must say, I find the whole philosophy of a government running a lottery quite distasteful. It really is a "tax on the stupid", and the idea of our own democratically elected officers ripping off their own citizens irks me a lot.
