An Economist Looks at 90: Tom Sowell on Charter Schools and Their Enemies

Recorded on July 1, 2020
The day before this show was recorded, Dr. Thomas Sowell began his 10th decade of life. Remarkably on one hand and yet completely expected on the other, he remains as engaged, analytical, and thoughtful as ever. In this interview (one of roughly a dozen or so we’ve conducted with Dr. Sowell over the years), we delve into his new book Charter Schools and Their Enemies, a sobering look at the academic success of charter schools in New York City, and the fierce battles waged by teachers unions and progressive politicians to curtail them. Dr. Sowell’s conclusion is equally thought provoking: If the opponents of charter schools succeed, the biggest losers will be poor minority children for whom a quality education is the best chance for a better life.

Remember that our nation's founders were very liberal in their time, going against the status quo with open minds, an exhaustive understanding of History and Human Nature..., and a willingness to try something better. The exact opposite of today's leftist groupthink.

I’ve taught at both Public and Charter schools. I agree more with what Dr. Sowell is saying rather than not. I have been a part of some amazing public schools, but over all, when it comes to public schools where the students are running the show and the teachers are too afraid to be in charge, they are by far less successful than a well run charter school.

This is not a new problem; Unions support poor teachers along with the best.!.!. Teachers who aren't involved in self improvement drag down the whole education system.!.!.! Overburdening teachers certainly doesn't help ANYONE.!.!.!...

She resigned the day she was called into the principal's office and told that she needed to back off as her students test scores were 'embarrassing' other teachers of the same grade! That and the fact that when one of her six year olds SPIT in her coffee cup and then threw it at her, she was told that the answer was to not bring a drink into her classroom!

Kudos to you. Dr. Sowell, my personal favorite thinker, was educated before affirmative action and other manifestations of the bigotry of low expectations. The differences in capability between races is trivial, even if it can be reliably determined. Who questions Thomas Sowell's competence? His thoughts are his credentials. As it should be. Let's turn the current phase of race politics to an examination of a person's character and intellect, rather than to the irrelevant nature of their genetics. Dr. Sowell was heaven-sent. We ignore him at our extreme peril.

His combination of intellect, class, and enthusiasm-with just a hint of the grandfatherly (he just turned 90, after all)-somehow make me extraordinarily happy. Is it possible to love someone you’ve never met and to whom you have absolutely no connection aside from a shared world view? I’ll call it simply admiration. Dr. Sowell, may you have health and happiness!
