Kind of weird that St Louis and El Reno had Tornadoes the same day. I was in the path of the El Reno. (Visiting my aunt obviously at the wrong time) she and my mom went to the store together, with my stepdad and I asked if I could stay at her house. I ignore the emergency alert system. Being from South Carolina we get those all the time. So I didn’t think too much of it, until my mom called my cell phone saying “baby there is a tornado on the ground you need to get in your aunts cellar” my mother was a corrections lieutenant at the time, police officer and I have never heard fear in her voice like I did that day. And I did not learn about this tornado until six months after. Really terrible that so many people had to go through two massive tornadoes the same day. My mom came to America in the 70s from Scotland she picked South Carolina cause of the beauty of our home state . She’s still there. I’m stuck in Ohio with my step dad and step mom.

I had been outdoors watching the storm roll in. The moment I turned around, I heard the sirens activate and made a beeline to my house down the hill. Scary for someone like me, especially because of my experiencew with the 2006 St. Louis tornado.

I came online tonight because it has never been clear to me how informed people were May 31, 2013 as to where the tornado was, where it was headed, how fast it was moving and how dangerous it was. Now I have my answer four years later. I grew up in St. Louis and follow life here daily even though I was kidnapped in 1964 to teach at the University of Chicago. My major tornado experience was the February, 1959 storm; I was up all night listening to KXOK as it slowly but surely became apparent a disaster had occurred though the Weather Service had kept stating there was no chance of a tornado and that the thunderstorms which had raged for hours would soon be over. Worse still, protocol then was that the sirens be sounded only in case of enemy attack and even worse there was no one at the emergency command center in Forest Park to do anything anyway. The 1959 tornado followed almost the same path as the 1927 tornado and, astoundingly, we now know in both cases there were two tornadoes, the first in both cases lifting in Forest Park and then a new funnel descending as the storm neared Kingshighway.

@@vibrantgleam yeah I heard South Carolina had one too thankfully it wasn’t bad it happened a few days after we left so it didn’t get any news about it until we got back. And wondered why the guttered were missing from our house.2013 and 2011 were some of the worst years for tornadoes. I’m curious to see what this year is going to hold. So far California had some Ohio had a couple South Carolina handsome and so many other places I can’t name all of them. Not just in the US either. It’s probably going to be horrible I really hope not but it is what it is sadly. We can’t control the weather.
