An Approach with Synthetic Vision on an iPad

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In a previous video, I demonstrated flying an instrument approach using only ForeFlight on an iPad for guidance. That exercise, in an aviation training device (ATD), showed how I use the blue airplane symbol in ForeFlight overlaid on an instrument approach chart to track my progress during the approach.
A few folks suggested using the synthetic vision feature available in some versions of ForeFlight, so in this video, I fly an RNAV (GPS) approach in the Bonanza with that feature enabled. The bottom half of the ForeFlight screen shows my progress on the aeronautical view, essentially a VFR chart. To help me fly the legs and altitudes defined for the approach, I added the procedure to the flight plan in ForeFlight.
After experimenting with the synthetic vision setup, I decided that I prefer displaying the approach chart, provided my basic flight instruments are available. But if I were having a truly bad IFR day, and my panel was completely dark, synthetic vision would be an excellent resource.

Amazing - looks like a great backup plan.

Great video, very useful! Thank you. I wonder: you seem to be using an AHRS, possibly the one built into the panel avionics, and possibly also the panel's Garmin as a GPS source? Wouldn't that be INOP in your assumed dark-panel scenario (e.g. zero electrical power)? If so, I'm curious to see if you could fly the same approach with only the iPad's built-in GPS (assuming you have the cellular version). I would guess you could, since today's GPS chips are so sensitive, they should work even inside a Bonanza's cockpit. You wouldn't have the nice attitude display in the SynthVision, of course, but otherwise it should work, right?

I made another video that showed using the iPad without displaying synthetic vision. You're correct that if the panel went dark the iPad would not receive enhanced position and AHRS information from the GTN 750Xi and G500Txi. But my iPad has a built-in GPS receiver and it gets a good signal on its own--I regularly fly with it in Cessna 172s that aren't equipped with avionics that connect to iPads. In a real dark panel emergency, I could still use the standby instruments for basic aircraft control. How did you get the crossing altitudes to appear on the route? I can get the chart overlayed, but mine doesn’t show the minimums like yours.

That's a feature of ForeFlight beginning with v13.5. If you load a procedure (e.g., an approach) as part of the route, segment altitudes appear on the map page, if you have the appropriate ForeFlight subscription level. The feature is described in the Pilot's Guide: If you have a Performance Plus or Business Performance plan the Enhanced Approach Procedure Markers will show the IAF and FAF with unique icons, and the waypoint labels include any crossing speed & altitude restrictions for each point. You can also specify the Approach Minimum altitude, which appears as a magenta marker for easy reference during the approach. NOTE: Route Labels must be ON (in Maps Settings) for Approach Minimums to be displayed. ... Augmented Procedures enable you to quickly find, select, and display the appropriate minimums for an approach to supplement the approach plate and reduce the risk of errors. Using high-quality Jeppesen procedure data and pilot-specified inoperative equipment, ForeFlight will display the relevant minimums for each approach type that may be used for the approach, along with any applicable restriction notes for each. Tap any of the available minimums to display them on the approach preview on the right. Augmented Procedures are available in Performance Plus and Business Performance subscription plans.

@@BruceAirFlying that’s why. I only have Performance Plus. That’s a cool feature though. I like it.
