An Apple Smart Watch is NOT Enough! 6 Items EVERY Man Should Own By 35

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If I had a DeLorean, I'd definitely go back to the future/past to advise my younger self on a few topics covered here on The Urban Gentry. And we're not just talking watches!
In today's video I share my top 6 essential items for everyone in their 30s. It has always been a goal of the channel to not only share my passion, learn more about the things I love, and explore new interests--but also to help others.
Naturally, watches make the list--as they are always a part of the conversation!--including why you should buy a real watch and not a smart watch, as well as motivational life tips, and tools that are worth investing in for self-improvement.
And for fans of the lovably supercilious Hugo Mountbatten, there's a sneak peek of one of his favorite books of all time.

When I first finished high school, a college mentor once told me the three things you need in the real world are: 1) Comfortable shoes to get you where you need to go 2) a good suit/blazer so you look good when you get there 3) a good watch so you get there on time. I am glad, TGV, that these three are on your list.

Heres it for me what I would like to own a good suit made out of fully natural fabric, a good dress watch, quality shoes and socks, a house, a proper kitchenware set up, toiletries organised well, a good razor, quality entertainment system and a good workout routine. My Grandad wore a sports jacket but was a roadmaker by trade. Deck shoes can go well with smarter attire

I was very lucky to inherit my grandfather's shotguns, I proudly display them in the living room of his (now our family's house) where he kept them for the last 60 years. I truly believe every man should know how to fire a gun. I would add a pistol, rifle or shotgun that one is very familiar with. Not necessarily with the aim of hunting or self defence but as an added skill. Bows are a good option as well. And besides, shooting clay is mighty fun. Loved this video!!

Any tool which can help you build, repair, fix or assemble anything you want to tackle. I do agree with every item TGV put forth, but for those who like the hands on experience, a good set of tools are essential.

When I attended med school in Düsseldorf in 1997 the central gathering place for our faculty was the Roy Lichtenstein hall which was lined with artwork the artist himself had worked on on the walls of our building. It took me a couple of years to realize that Lichtenstein had died only 2 weeks before I saw these walls for the first time. Sometimes it takes a certain age and maturity to appreciate and fully understand the profoundness of culture.

I will add two items. 1.) A pocket knife. You can find an endless variety of styles, sizes, shapes, colors, materials, etc. There is something out there that will speak to you. There's nothing wrong with a simple little Swiss Army Knife. I lost count of how many loose threads I cut off of clothing with those little scissors some of them have attached. They are simply very useful tools. Be warned, people that don't carry one around and know that you do will bug you to use it all the time. 2.) A quality writing instrument. I believe every man should own at least one nice writing instrument. I have more pens than any sane person should own. The classiest being a Pelikan Souveran M800 fountain pen (black with solid gold trim and nib) purchased some 17 years ago from Richard Binder (fountain people will know the name). It's timelessly elegant in my opinion. You don't need something that expensive. Like pocket knives, there is an endless variety and you can find something classy and nice for a fraction of the price. Taking notes on a smart phone is not as good as using actual pen and paper. I promise you will get compliments on this item from people.

An outstanding list, TVG. Excellent guidance for all ages. There are a few accessories I think are worth considering: 1) A solid pen along the lines of Cross, for example, which will last a lifetime. 2) A smartphone, essential for communication and information. Unfortunately, you'll have to upgrade occasionally. 3) A Swiss Army Knife, with scissors, a bottle/can opener, etc. This tool will also last a lifetime. My three suggestions are items I find myself using daily.

I would have agreed with you 15 or 20 years ago, but that ship has sailed. I spent years carefully curating a collection of records and cds, and investing in a high quality stereo to enjoy them. But that feels like a long time ago, because in many requests, it was. Firing up the big stereo with floorstanding speakers, cd player or turntable, etc, must look to young people as old fashioned as my grandparents putting a 78 on the old Victrola looked to me when I was a teenager. Like it or not, streaming services mated with smart speakers are how most people listen to music, so maybe the key is to invest in a good set of headphones or better quality smart speakers.

One thing I learned from the Army, never go cheap on footwear. If you are on your feet alot, especially in a job setting, it is probably your biggest investment when it comes to gear. I wear steel toe boots daily and you can certainly tell cheaply made boots versus those that might seem more expensive initially, but always pay off in the end. Also, get a watch. Never be forced to have to ask the time. Even today, with smart phones and watches, I still get asked the time when I am out. If I could go back 25 years, I would tell myself, "buy the best that you can afford, and be prepared to hang on to it for as long as you can." Great video, TGV!

I just got fitted for a custom pair of boots for the reasons outlined in this episode. It is quite pricey at over $600 USD. But, they measured every aspect of each foot and I was able to pick out the leather and make choices on all other parts, including the sole. My watch (other than my Fenix 6x) is custom made by a micro brand (the owner is a good friend), and the same things apply: I get to choose the movement, the hands, the strap, etc. I've looked into bespoke jeans, but have not ordered any. My EDC pocket knife is also custom made by a gentleman in North Carolina. Again, expensive, but I have never needed another blade in over four years.

Knives have been the most important tools and a good knife can last as long as a good watch when taken care of. That emotional bond you can also form with a knive that makes a companion in your adventures. Every man needs a companion knive like an Opinel or a Victorinox or whatever suits you best.

A swiss pocket knife. From opening a bottle of your favourite beverage to cutting open a packet, it is one of the most versatile items you can carry on your body. It also doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Some great suggestions on here sir and anyone looking for these things won't go wrong. The only advice I can give to anyone under 30 is collect memories/experiences rather than just items. There is no doubt many of these mentioned in this video will assist in this 👍

Some might say an Apple watch is NEVER the answer to which watch to wear...

Some might agree. The smartwatch looks like a gadget you have to wear before you reach 30. Then you are selected to attend The Carousel for orderly termination.

As an older man I think knowledge and resourcefulness. Not something you buy but you do gather. Things can be gained and lost and replaced but your wits will always be with you. Tools to use that knowledge are great but without the knowledge almost useless.

Love the diversity & elegance in this post with a squeeze of humbleness still. I would add: 1- Jewelry ( rings and/or necklace) 2- Mobile phone, it is becoming more of an ID. Maybe you wouldn’t dive into the technology but on the impact of certain dependable and robust brands vs others… 3- A pen.
