    Not mentioned here was that Sant'Ambrogio suffered extensive damage during World War II bombing raids. The apse is a reconstruction, as are the vaults. The amount of cultural and historical loss is incalculable.

    Wow. There are so many things about this basilica that would be fascinating to see explored further. That amazing mosaic, the interesting use of the groin vault, the incredible altar, the antiquity and all the various influences witnessed here - along with so many other features - it's all fantastic. Thanks for a glimpse of this wonderful place. :)

    This was an appropriate end for the Medieval playlist - so many gorgeous religious spaces. My life became so much more expensive because I've got to see some of them in person, lol. The Saint Ambrose embroidery got me - I've never seen anything quite like it. The colors are so similar but distinct enough to make out important features. It's lovely. ... and then I saw the golden altar and lost my breath. You guys really did save (some of) the best for last. 🙂
