This skit was originally an AD campaign to promote the premier league here in the states back in 2013 on NBC. It was originally meant to be a one off thing but Ted Lasso happened and well, the rest is history haha. It’s still nuts to think such a popular show started out as a comedy sketch lol.

Ted Lasso is rather good. I mean the entire thing is really, really cheesy and serves as a series of ads for Apple devices, which are carefully placed throughout each episode. London consists of 4 roads (except for a couple of episodes), football scenes are completely ridiculous, first season suffers from poor CGI, and there are many other problems with the show, and yet despite all that I binge watched both 2 seasons in 2 days. It's really fun to watch.

The ranks of American NFL and college football fans are legion with Ted Lassos. There are vast swathes of America where world football/futbol/the beautiful game is regarded with the sort of suspicion one might associate with a young middle eastern-looking man boarding an airplane whilst wearing a curiously oversized jacket. It's not just the laws of the game which confuse many Americans. The format of league and tournament competition is baffling to American logic. For example: tie- breaking rules in a two legged competition. Obviously (to a football fan) there is goal differential, total goals, away goals, fair play, etc. Americans often cannot compute that logic. "Why don't they just play a third game to decide?" The concept of a treble is so foreign that one may as well not bother. To an American, the scheduled season (aka "regular season") is simply the test a team must pass in order to compete for a championship. The idea of the same teams competing with each other in concurrent competitions, none of which have anything to do with the other, is illogical to the point of lunacy... We are getting there. Step one is complete... establish a competitive, entertaining league which attracts a respectable fan base. MLS have done that. We will know that we've truly made it when world class players in their prime are signing with LA Galaxy or FC Dallas, rather than Manchester City or Bayern München. That's a fair bit down the road, but it will happen.
