Thanks to Peni Ediker for sharing the way she has been starting seeds for decades! This is perfect for saving time, money, and space! I can attest this works well having known Peni for the last 3 years, visiting her inspiring garden regularly.

A lady after my own heart! There is only one left in my family - me. I cannot eat so much, so huge harvests are not important. I like variety, though. I have limited space. I do exactly the same as the lady does but use vermiculite over the seeds which marks the rows and the vermiculite holds moisture (the light vermiculite also appeals to my artistic eye). Also, I use a spray bottle with water to water them when I have run out of trays to feed water into, having to juggle space a bit. Then I then cover with the clear lid. I also separate and replant them in larger pots when they are still very small which everyone warns against but works really well for me.
Learned a new way …. Feel really dumb for not thinking of using cardboard 🥴 I use it in my garden and compost but never thought of using as a seed starting tray.
Great stuff Huw.
I did.something similar this year. I used aluminum roasters and mass sowed seeds. And I got some with clear lids and they became mini greenhouses. I love the use of cardboard to line trays for potting up!
This method does work! I've done this for several years, and also use the bottom watering method. There is a slight difference with my bottom watering: I use the 1020 trays (no holes) to hold my modules/pots, and just keep the plants in the water, watering weekly, a half gallon per 1020 tray. Sometimes they still dry out before a week is up, so I have to watch and make sure my plants are alright. For me, I have not had damping off issues since doing the bottom watering, and my plants are hardy and beautiful. Mostly I am growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and some flowers and herbs. I direct sow alot of other items. Thanks for the encouragement from this video. It's nice to see I'm not alone! Blessings!
My niece grew marigolds and tomatoes from an old milk crate filled with compost.
Thank you so much for this informative viedeo! Greetings from Austria! 🇦🇹
Thank you Peni! (and Huw, of course!)Just in time for my next succession of seed sowing as I've run out of modules ❤
No matter how long you've been gardening, there's always something new to learn!
Oh, what a great video!! I could have used this 2 weeks ago. I love the idea of potting up plants in cardboard lined crates. I had more seedlings than pots and compost. Thank you!! We never stop learning from each other.
Like the lifting of the seedlings from the bottom and using water to help separate the roots. Thanks
Stellar! Thank you for the inspiration and new info✨Cardboard lined crate is great idea.
I think this is an especially wonderful approach when you sow a lot of seeds of only a few varieties. I have the opposite situation: a lot of varieties with only a few plants needed of each. I'm spending a lot more time labeling/drawing up legends to keep things straight.
Thanking you for this Alternative seed starting technique, it is going to be used in hope to obtain room inside my small greenhouse.
I do tend to multi sow in one tray, but what a great idea about the cardboard in mushroom tray! Thank you ❤
Really enjoyed the tips from Peni, thanks for sharing Huw 🎉
Hurray! I've been teaching this !method for a couple of years. Well done.
Love the video so much Huw. Me and my dad have done all of are seed but we are running out of space in the vegetable beds. Your book has helped me a lot whilst the beginning of growing season.
I do the same, however, I cover my seeds with either vermiculite or sand. Never had damping off.
Thank you for sharing, the knowledge has been acquired, I will follow.
