My older cousin lived with us from 1993-1994 and wore this religiously. He worked at a Sears across the street from our house and would visit him occasionally if I was bored. He worked in the stereo section and could pick up Safari from two sections over!!!!! This scent takes me back!!!!

Both Polo Green and Safari are stellar classics. Love them both. Safari is beautiful spicy patchouli, has this warmth to it, it really feels like walking through high grass in sun scorched savana. My bottle is about 2 years old and performance is decent, cannot compare with the old one, but no complains really.

I LOVE this stuff. One of my first purchases when I got in the game. Timeless, goes with any outfit/occasion. Absolute 10/10

After English leather, which was a gift from my mother back in the late seventies, Safari was the first fragrance I bought. I just loved it.

Absolutely love Safari. Love these types videos you are doing , Dan. And the original Polo Green was a killer fragrance ( damn new reformulated fragrances ). Paid 78 dollars for a 125 ml of Safari here in Ontario Canada. Ahhhhhh, good ol days😊😊

Completely agree about it having a luxuriousness that are absent from designer fragrances today. The advent of fruity and 'blue' fragrances was the death-knell of the style.

I did finally get to smell the newest formulation of Safari and can confim that it's worse than the reform of Polo. I used to be very much against the reform of Polo until I gifted my father a recent bottle and was surprised that the drydown on him was actually pretty decent. So I picked up a newer bottle for myself and although it is a significant reform, it's not as tragic as I remember it being. On SKIN. To be clear. Because up close on paper....not-the-greatest. Anyway, I can't wait for your review of Polo Cologne Intense Dan. You, Max, Sebastian and Greggieboy have the final word on that one as far as I'm concerned. Really hope RL put Daniela Andrier on the next flanker. She's brilliant with pine.

Great review of a true classic. Got this when it was released in the early 90's. Still love it and have picked up some vintage Cosmair versions to stock up my wardrobe for quite some time. I wouldn't touch the new stuff as vintage Cosmair is still around and not too pricey. Cheers.

This is my dad's favourite fragrance. I managed to find some 11ml Cosmair bottles for some of his Christmas presents.

As a 50+ year old I love these vintage scents videos. The Safari bottle is simply stunning! Too bad about the fragrance's longevity (or lack thereof). The only time I ever owned a bottle was about a decade or so ago and it was to me delightful smelling but very much below average in longevity. Certainly not a problem with the original Polo!

I had this one back in the day and gave it away. Very sweet to me.

Bought this a few months ago and liked it so much I added it to my personal favorites signature collection, along with my personal favorite in my #1 spot Polo Green. Both are obviously the newer formulations, and if the originals were better I can't imagine how good they must have been because I have no complaints with newer Polo and Safari. I also have Ralph Lauren Purple Label, which was so good I also added that to my 20 bottle personal signature collection (out of hundreds of frags)! That Purple Label is to my nose and some others, a "precurser" of sorts to Creed Aventus, especially in the woody, smokey dry down. Just swap out the pineapple for blackberries. Just for giggles, here is my current ~20 bottle personal favorites signature collection (in order of preference): 1. RL Polo (Green) 2. Dior Eau Savauge 3. Terre d'Hermes Parfum 4. Tom Ford Beau de Jour (favorite of the "Barbershop" fougere genre) 5. Creed Aventus 6. Guerlain Vetiver 7. Creed Bois du Portugal 8. Floris Elite (beautiful hybrid of Polo Green and Creed Bois du Portugal in the Floris understated, refined, traditional DNA of Floris of London) 9. Tom Ford Ombre Leather 10. Givenchy Gentleman EDP 11. Guerlain Heritage 12. John Varvatos (love the date note, and for some reason I imagine this as what a "fleshed out" and more complex Old Spice would be like! They both share amber and cinnamon and I think both are Spicy Orientals) 13. RL Purple Label 14. RL Safari 15. Varvatos Dark Rebel & Dark Rebel Rider (fun art) 16. Dolce & Gabbana The One EDP 17. Lalique L'Insoumis 18. Bleu de Chanel 19. Floris Neroli Voyage 20. Classic Old Spice Other frags in my collection that could be in my signature collection but are displayed/categorized elsewhere: Houbigant Fougere Royale (2010 re-release), Chanel Pour Monsieur, Hermes Equipage, CK Obsession for Men, Penhaligon's Sartorial, MDCI Invasion Barbare, Lalique Pour Homme (Lion). So RL Safari is highly regarded amongst notable peers!

An excellent fragrance that kept me company in the late 90's. Very similar to another one of my favorites - YSL Jazz.

I remember my friend bringing this round to my house around 1994 along with Calvin Klein's escape and liking escape much more..I was in my early twenties though at the time..I suppose if I had the choice now I'd prefer safari

Here's the gift set I picked up from Macy's in 1992. I'm guessing a Ralph Lauren duffle bag was thrown in. With Polo Sport, I got a beach blanket. I have a vintage cosmair safari with the dark juice like that too, if you get me on the right day i might say its my favorite. But then i have my cosmair polo greens too...

Safari and Armani Eau Pour Homme were the fragrances I used in the ‘90s when I started my career. Such great all purpose scents.

Hello Dan, I am a huge fan of the original Polo. In the dry down on my skin, it smells like freshly baked pie dough pieces that have been sprinkled with cinnamon and a hint of sugar, and I am eating this delicious baked pie dough while wearing a luxurious black leather coat. I adore it! A little over a month ago, right before the Macy's nearest me closed down, I had a sniff of the current version of Safari, and I thought it smelled awful. Somehow, I doubt it's awful, because I seem to recall really enjoying the fragrance back in the 90's. By the way, Ralph Lauren's last name is not French. It is actually pronounced the same as the first name of the very famous American actress named Lauren Bacall, who was married to actor Humphrey Bogart. I had both the Safari (Cosmair) and YSL Jazz when I was in my mid 20s around 1994-95, I got far more compliments (both male and female) when wearing the Safari, lovely, classy juice!

Safari was my dad's SS and he still has his og formulation bottle about 1/3 juice left. My English Laundry Notting Hill is close enough for an affordable alternative.

OMG....this and cool water were the 1st 2 frags i ever got!!! How different spectrums could i have got 😁

Mr Smelly, one of your pet hates seems to be people carrying on about fragrance performance. Do you not think talking about reformulations is practically the same thing? Either way as you you know, love your content and look forward to your new fragrance coming out!!

...i’ve worn two Ralph Lauren suits to destruction and generally am attracted to his fashion and furnishings but my aversion? to my contemporary bottle of Polo prevents me from even trying/caring about my samples of the Red and Blue flankers...lol...but I would like to know what all the fuss was about and to give Safari a try...is this another rabbit-hole i have to dive into?

This one often gets compared to Pasha de Cartier EDT, Tsar de Van Cleef & Arpels and YSL Jazz of which I own the Jazz. I absolutely love that one. You could almost pick up Safari just for the bottle, but if I do get it it'll probably be the vintage as everyone seems to agree that the current formula isn't very good.

The last time I smelled a current formulation of Polo Green (a few years ago), I was shocked at how bad it was. It didn't smell anything like the Polo I bought when it first came out.

I believe Polo was originally a Brooks Brothers label, Ralph was aware of it from the days when he was working for Brooks Brothers in Manhattan. He thought that it had more potential and Brooks Brothers wasn't doing that much with it, plus he was big into the whole east coast "preppy" look. So with the help of his financial backers he persuaded them to sell him the rights to that label. Fast forward a few decades, Polo is everywhere and Brooks Brothers filed bankruptcy within the last year or so. Nice watches.

I bought my first bottle of Safari back in -94 and I just loved it, I got plenty of compliments all the time! Then one day I bought a new bottle (probably my third 125ml) and it smelled so different and so lame! After that I didn't got any more compliments and I throw that bottle away as I couldn't stand it, it had been too generic and smelled like what a bad copy would smell back in the 90's! Back then I didn't know that they could reformulate it without a notice as it was a totally different fragrance and more powdery than the original! I would buy tit again if it would smell as it use to!

Possibly Ralph Lauren's best fragrance, except maybe for Polo Green. Safari has definitely aged better though. I have a Cosmair edition but still find it to be rather weak.

The cosmair is the real deal. The modern formulation is watered-down cat's piss!

I'm about your age, and I'm afraid I have to wear Pokemon garments because my youngest boy insists I dress like him.

Alas, the modern version of Safari is just a shadow of the original. More like a long lost cousin. It's been reformulated from my signature scent in my youth to something very forgettable.
