An activist’s battle to stop illegal mining in India’s Aravalli mountains | 101 East Documentary
In northern and western India lies an ancient mountain range, the Aravallis, believed to be hundreds of millions of years old.
Stretching across almost 700km (435 miles), the mountains are home to rivers, a diverse range of trees and wildlife, and according to experts, they are the main barrier shielding millions of people from an expanding desert.
But these mountains are disappearing, ravaged by illegal mining carried out to feed New Delhi’s construction boom, prompting warnings of a looming ecological catastrophe.
101 East travels to the northwestern state of Rajasthan to investigate the assault on the Aravalli mountains.

We must understand, unless we are climate change deniers that such issues are not the matter of a country, when these mountains came into existence, there was no India, Indonesia, Japan, Morocco, China, Russia, and so on. It was just One Beautiful planet called Earth!

This deserves more views, as us, the citizens of India should be aware of these pressing issues and take action to help our society just like the beloved activists in this video. Thank you for this journalism
I see a similar situation in Darjeeling and Sikkim. Kindly cover that also. Believe Me, Last time when I went to Pelling in Sikkim, my eyes rolled into tears when I saw a barren spot ( dont know how to describe) in between mountains. The whole mountain was cut. The Teesta river is illegally mined for sand and stones as everyday, a new construction project is coming. The construction is never ending.

Many aren't aware that destruction of mountains can really, really mess up the environment. They are basically inviting all kinds of catastrophes. 😢

I am from Dausa , Rajasthan and this type of illegal mining is also seen here in aravali range by bajri and stone mafia ,they sold out many mountains near me, it is really very dangerous and catastrophic. Sad reality is that no one is caring about this issue
Thank you for highlighting the real issues in India. The Indian media often fails to address critical problems, focusing instead on promoting the government's narrative. In Gurgaon, one of the largest cities, the situation is dire. Stone crushers surround my apartment in Sector 79, creating pervasive dust that forces us to stay indoors. The construction projects flout regulations, leaving roads in disarray. These are our daily struggles. We simply need clean air to breathe, but this basic necessity seems unattainable due to the negligence of both the media and the government.
Illegal sand mining is also going on in some areas of Punjab. Please make a report on that too. Ruling parties are directly involved in these kinds of activities
This is the case throughout India. Hills are being dug out for precious minerals, granites and marbles, or for stone chips. Jungles are being destroyed.
GOOD Informative video By You Guys Our National Media Dont Show Us This U r Bringing This Type Of Topics GREAT work AJ and The Activists ❤
The same story lies there in Sargodha and Chiniot Pakistan where huge mountains have been crushed to develop country. Where there were huge mountains now they are drilling down trenches to extra t more limestone unaware of the geological impact on the region. I would request Al-Jazeera to cover it too. These mountains called Kirana hills range are also called the continuation of Aravalli range in Punjab and these have similarities geologically with Aravalli mountains.
My village Bharala is facing a lot of problems in the form of illegal mining and how nature is also being harmed. This should be stopped as soon as possible, only then we will be able to build the future properly.🙏🏻

In India, climate change is not even a issue in politics. People just expect never-ending development without realizing it's cost on environment. Development needs to be sustainable. Otherwise, heat waves will worsen and many parts of the country will become unhabitable.
