@Aviadynamics You aren't absolutely right. This plane has been constructed in the USSR. Wings, a fuselage and the chassis were under construction in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), wheels - in Moscow Region and Yaroslavl (Russia), engines (NK-12) from Kuibyshev (Samara, Russia). Thus planes were issued in Tashkent. I assure you, this plane has been constructed by the huge country which was called Soviet Union, and to divide, who was more enclosed in its creation (Ukraine or Russia) is simply silly.

That run way is very short, serving mostly Cesna or Leer jet size planes typically. But because it is located next to the museum it was to be displayed at, they went for flying it in. Required a very skilled pilot to land on a runway shorter than the recommended length for such a behemoth. Think landing a plane on a carrier w/out the tail hook and having to stop before going off the front of the deck.

Ничего удивительного что не с первого раза сел, полоса такая короткая что по ТТХ он не должен там вообще садиться. Пилоты на первых двух подходах оценивали возможность посадки и отрабатывали снижение так чтобы коснуться в самом начале полосы.

The An-22 and Bear both have coaxial contrarotating props. That would account for the unique sound, but I also wonder what the prop RPMs-and therefore the tip speeds-are. Are we hearing supersonic tips from these huge props (18 ft IIRC)? Also, given the short rollout, does the aircraft have reversible-pitch props for reverse thrust on short fields?

They started a 2nd airframe but then the Buran program was cancelled. When they started using the An-225 for freight, it got more and more work. At some point it got more work then it could handle, so it was decided to start up the build of the 2nd An-225 again, but was again halted in 2009 because business slowed down due to the economic crisis. It's still sitting in a corner of the Antonov factory.

It was built in USSR :) Antonov itself came from Russia to Ukraine and became the director of the Design Bureau, now it's named after him. Such famous plaines as An-12, An-22, An-124, An-225 were built in USSR. Now it's in independent Ukraine. And there are already 100% Ukrainian planes, such as An-70, An-140, An-148 etc. By the way, after destruction of USSR An-225 Mria almost died (there is only single plane) and fortunately was renovated by 2006 and certified for international cargo service.

It interesting to note that the fire-crew was on standby. In general, risky landings are avoided in the civil/commercial aviation industry. In this case there must have been some urgent need for the landing to be undertaken in those conditions.

This An-22 is still on display at the Technikmuseum in Speyer. To make the transport to the museum easier they decided to land at Speyer Airport which is usually only used for business and general aviation and has a rather short runway, hence the fire crew. They also have a 747-200 on display which was flown to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airpark and transported to the museum overnight!
