An 18th Century Nighttime Skincare Routine
Us creatures have been aiming for beautiful skin for thousands of years. How did we take care of our skin over 200 years ago? Today, we'll recreate a recipe from the 1772 publication Toilet of Flora and use it as it was all those years ago.

Let's talk about this cold cream from 1772. In this video I had on sunscreen and a bit of rouge on my cheeks. Off camera I tested it afterwards by using my regular micellar water on a cotton pad to see if any sunscreen or gunk was left behind. The cotton came back clean. I'm impressed! Somehow it also did not break me out which is an even greater miracle. Below you will find the instructions for making it translated from the original, which you can find at the end of the video. Recreating period skincare is my guilty pleasure! I have so much fun doing it. Thank you for joining along. 😊 Cold Cream, or Pomatum for the Complexion (1772) A little under a teaspoon of White beeswax A little under a teaspoon of jojoba oil, to substitute for Spermaceti which is now (rightfully so) illegal to harvest 4 tablespoons of Almond oil 3 tablespoons of distilled water Combine your beeswax, jojoba oil and almond oil in a small pot. Melt on low heat till fully liquid, mixing all the while. This happens quickly so be sure to watch closely. Once melted remove from your heat and set aside to cool for a few minutes. Pour into a mortar and into it slowly stir in with a pestle distilled water, being sure to only add a little bit at a time. Mix up with the pestle until you have a smooth cream. * I really recommend using a mortar and pestle for this, as was recommended in the original instructions. The cream seems to become smoother and creamier when using this method vs any other. Toilet of Flora later mentions that some women enjoy the addition of rose water.

I use a handmade cold cream very similar to this one. Except for the addition of lavender, which is very gentle. Love it! Thanks for sharing this.😊

Same! I make salves and facial creams, etc. with extremely basic ingredients; it never occurred to me to use a historical recipe. I've always just done tallow or meat grease and infused oil. I want to order a couple of old books.

My grandmother used to use soap made out of beef tallow. Those types of things sound so outlandish nowadays huh? I remember when she first told me that I thought she was joking bc I thought there was no way that would work lmao

It’s weird to see the everyday lives of past people. I tend to think of the lives of past people in the same way as I think of fantasy characters. But there’s something so real about seeing this. Thank you!!

A very relatable video. At least once a week: My wife "I'm exhausted I need to go to bed early". Ten minutes after getting in bed: Also my wife "I forgot my skin care" as she gets up and proceeds to spend the next 30 minutes on her skin care routine. 🤣

I'll do the same thing, and while I'm doing my skincare routine, our toddler wants to join me. So by the time I get done my skincare, cleaned up the flood that our toddler has made, and get her back to bed, my husband is already in lala land 😂😂😂

@@MydNyteRayne Likely so. I think most people did a cursory wash with water jug and basin and whatever homemade soap was to hand. Any extra facial care was probably only an occasional thing.
The lack of cinematic background music throughout the routine brought realism to the livelihood you've portrayed. I appreciate this a lot.
“I’m just glad I have a husband who knows how to read.” This was great. I loved seeing the two of you interact! I’d also love to see more videos of your historical beauty concoctions. And your cat is beautiful!

No matter how bad my days occasionally are - today was a doozie! - watching this priceless channel always resets my mood to a happy one. I love Early Americana & O😊am interested in the everyday details of how people lived back then so this video was perfect. I love vintage self care rituals especially and really enjoyed you showing us how ladies cared for their skin in this time period. The cameo of your cat was an added bonus - what a charmer! You and Ron were truly meant for each other and l too strive, to the best of my abilities, to ' be in the world but not of the world'. Actually l try to not even be in the world at all! I'm definitely going to try this wonderful cold cream recipe. May l ask what book 📖 it was you were reading?

I read that in the 1800s, in London I think, some English city, there was a society of "cat meat" men who had a guild complete with dues and membership rolls ( "cat meat" meaning men who gather meat for cats to eat, not the meat of cats.) So I think there was a kind of pet food industry of sorts.
These videos about routines make me so happy 🖤☕️
I love to watch how my ancestors lived!!! Thank you😊
This is the best channel on KZread with the best content! You 2 are my absolute favorite 🥰

I love the kitty break with mish mish !!
So that's why your skin is so clear and beautiful. Thanks for this. I love you guys videos so much.
Love this episode so very much. ❤
Five star acting, I've never seen more convincing sleeping and the flower on my face line was a complete home run. Haha! 😆😂 Loved it! I couldn't imagine finding or using spermiceti oil, but it's definitely cool to see that women were using the same products/routine we do today, but fit their time period. And that bed!! Oh the horror hanky panky night must have brought on the whole household. 🙈😂😂😂😂
That was great! Loved the ending. Ron’s a hoot. Justine your a natural beauty. I needed a good chuckle, it made my day. Thanks guys!😄❤️
I’ve been missing videos like this. Thank you Justine for recipe for making a natural face cream.
We love love when you add story! Thanks you two.
I enjoyed this video so much! I'll be making myself some face cream from this receipt. Please do some more videos like this one. Our ancestors were regular people with regular lives, and we need to be reminded of that sometimes. Ya'lls re-enactment gave us a little peak into their lives, and Mish Mish did a smashing job portraying the typical family pet😂😅 Love yall❤

I have ASMR like crazy and if I lived back then, I'd be overloaded with tingles. I love this channel because it's educational, entertaining, and relaxing all in one.
I love this! I make many salves and balms. Presently, I am steeping birch bark in olive oil to make a sore joint rub🙂
This was so much fun. You are beautiful, Justine, even without the cream!
That little glass vial is so cuuute!
I watched this with my boyfriend on the big screen TV after dinner tonight. So awesome and just naturally funny, I am overjoyed with the lines
I love this video! It’s so fascinating to see how things were done, and this beauty treatment / cold cream is especially wonderful! Oh and the cat “intermission” was especially adorable! 🥰 Thank you so much for educating and teaching us all of these wonderful processes used in daily life! I’m definitively getting the ingredients & making this for myself! You 3 are so amazing and the time & preparation you put into each video is VERY much appreciated❣️❤️

I recently went to Petersburg, IL (an hour from my house) & visited Lincoln’s state park site during the music festival! They had people in the houses explaining history and it was so neat to see how everything was back in that time. It was like getting a feel of you & Ron for a little bit.
