Lyrics
You should be stronger than me
You been here seven years longer than me
Don't you know you supposed to be the man?
Not pale in comparison to who you think I am
You always wanna talk it through, I don't care
I always have to comfort you when I'm there
But that's what I need you to do, stroke my hair
'Cause I've forgotten all of young love's joy
Feel like a lady and you my ladyboy
You should be stronger than me
But instead you're longer than frozen turkey
Why'd you always put me in control?
All I need is for my man to live up to his role
Always wanna talk it through, I'm okay
Always have to comfort you every day
But that's what I need you to do, are you gay?
'Cause I've forgotten all of young love's joy
Feel like a lady, and you my ladyboy
He said, "The respect I made you earn
Thought you had so many lessons to learn"
I said, "You don't know what love is, get a grip
Sound as if you're reading from some other tired script"
I'm not gonna meet your mother anytime
I just wanna grip your body over mine
Please tell me why you think that's a crime
I've forgotten all of young love's joy
Feel like a lady and you my ladyboy
You should be stronger than me
You should be stronger than me
You should be stronger than me
You should be stronger than me

@@HM55-77 yeah she most definitely is playing the guitar live as she sings. It’s much easier to tell with earphones or headphones but if you listen to and specifically focus in on the right side, you can clearly hear a rhythm guitar. As a musician and guitarist myself, I can tell you that the melodic and rhythmic phrasing she’s using on the guitar and all of the dynamics of the performance you’re hearing do indeed line up perfectly with what she’s playing visually! She was immensely talented. There’s quite a few great videos around of her playing alone with an acoustic guitar and she’s definitely quite competent to do what she did, especially while singing so brilliantly well. Usually one takes a back burner to the other and by comparison leaves the lesser skill feeling lacking. With Amy tho, she was one of those true unicorns that could do it all and although her vocals took the spotlight, her talents on other instruments she played should not be overlooked or taken for granted.

@@1060michaelg do you think it’s possible that maybe it was her choice? I am being serious. I feel like I’ve seen interviews with her talking about what it’s like writing with her bandmates. It always seemed symbiotic to me, but I wasn’t there. I hope that she wasn’t really put up on the shelf like that. It is extremely satisfying to watch her play and sing at the same time. I find it just as satisfying to watch her just sing sometimes too, but that’s because she was so very amazing.

@@kassandrakid9440 Anie--- I agree with as regards the symbiosis that existed between her and her band...maybe at some point Amy just figured, I'll just sing because she had top notch players so perhaps she thought "It'd be redundant to have me playing as well..." but I can't get over that, to me, she looked a little uncomfortable without her guitar, but not all the time. Certainly her producer and her "people" had influence and were no doubt saying, "Amy, they come to see you sing..." and there is a parallel between Amy and Karen Carpenter in this area; Karen was an expert drummer (and many other instruments). It gave her joy to play. But in Karen's case, she was tactlessly pushed into giving up playing onstage and just be the front girl, singing. Karen HATED not being able to play, and you could see it. But I don't think Amy, even at her most vulnerable, could be "Pushed" into anything! Heh, that's my long winded way of agreeing with you!! Peace.

@@Beherenoww She was very talented, I agree. My point was that there are and have been many, many singers who also sang from their souls, and who wrote great music. Some people have a tendency to indulge in hagiography of a particular singer, especially if they died young. I am a long-time professional singer, who has played countless gigs with other singers and songwriters who reinvent their songs every time they sing, and who write powerfully from their souls. And that's not even mentioning the many well-known artists who also do that. Again, Amy Winehouse was a great talent, and I really do love her chops and music. But there are many who are equally talented, and each one is "inique" in their own way.

Yeah, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm not going to do your homework for you and direct you to the many other great singer/songwriters from past and present who are in the same class musically. That's for you to do, because that's where the fun is! Open your ears, and don't get stuck on the comparison game where a singer or band must be 'the greatest' or whatever. I'm a long-time gigging professional musician and singer, and I can tell you that most professional musicians simply don't play that whole "who's best?" game. I personally know at least 70 guitarists on the gigging scene in my city (small city, pop 1M or so, I am also a long-time professional musician in the city, which is how I know them well) who could play it the exact same way, without working very hard to do it. At least half of them could also be playing with vocal phrasing and delivery at the same time So, it's a long way from incredible. She's a huge talent, and is surely dearly missed. But no, she isn't an incredible guitarist on any level. "Incredible" is when you can play guitar in a way very few can. That's not true of Amy Winehouse, on this track, at least, and not on any others I have seen. She was an "incredible" vocal stylist and musical presence. Really unique and powerful. So let's agree on at least this much: she was really, really good, and it's a shame she's gone.

I have listened to this like ten times today. I love the way she plays that rhythm. Simple yet sophisticated! Her ability to sync her vocals with the rhythm is just so smooth!

I love how when the trumpet solo starts and the camera zooms in, you can see trombone guy just close his eyes and fuckin vibe like music is piercing his damn soul. Fucking love it, watching musicians enjoy what they do.

✨ • LYRICS • ✨ You should be stronger than me You've been here seven years longer than me Don't you know you're supposed to be the man? Not pale in comparison to who you think I am Cuz' you always wanna talk it through, I don't care I always have to comfort you when I'm there But that's what I need you to do, stroke my hair 'Cause I've forgotten all of young love's joy Feel like a lady, and you my lady boy You should be stronger than me But instead you're longer than frozen turkey Why'd you always put me in control? When all I need is for my man to live up to his role You always wanna talk it through, I'm okay I always have to comfort you every day But that's what I need you to do, are you gay? 'Cause I've forgotten all of young love's joy Feel like a lady, and you my lady boy He said: The respect I made you earn Thought you had so many lessons to learn I said: You don't know what love is, get a grip Sound as if you're reading from some other tired script Because I'm not gonna meet your mother anytime I just wanna grip your body over mine So please, tell me why you think that's a crime? I've forgotten all of young love's joy Feel like a lady, and you my lady boy You should be stronger than me You should be stronger than me You should be stronger than me You should be stronger than me
