I've been a fan of Search since 1986. I finally saw Amy live in 2004. He sang Mentari Merah Di Ufuk Timur a mere few feet away. I was in the front row of a small club. It was unforgettable.

This is Malaysia’s legendary rock band, Search, and the frontman is, of course, Amy. The song is ‘Mentari Merah Di Ufuk Timur’ (literally, Red Sun in the East Horizon, which may have been a more poetic expression of ‘The Rising Sun‘ in Bahasa Malaysia). It’s taken from their 1987 album (also called ‘Mentari Merah Di Ufuk Timur), which also features the hit ‘Fantasia Bulan Madu’. The band was formed by Hillary Ang (the lead guitarist in this video, playing the red guitar) and Zainal Rampa in 1980 (although for whatever reason, the official version of the band’s history mentioned that it was 1981). They recruited Amy as their vocalist, and Yazit (featured in this video) as their drummer. Din (rhythm guitar) joined later, as did Nasir, after a succession of bass players came and went.

Search is really2 big. They penetrated the Indonesian market n their song, Isabella is still well known there. Isabella was also recorded as a Chinese song in Hong Kong. Search, Wings, May n Lefthanded were considered the big four in Malaysia. Spend ur time n venture also to Cromok. A Malaysian band but started and make some impact in Australia in the beginning. Thrash with traditional touch. The lead guitaris in this video used to be a member of Cromok as well. Tq

Hi Tim & Vena. I'm very happy that both of you react to Search songs. Just for your info, the rock vocalist doesn't necessarily sing with harsh or growling voice as some rock ballad songs had different tone. There are some heavy metal rock songs, but generally Malaysians do like most of slow ballad rock type as it were also also liked by female fans. Don't forget that as rock music was usually dominated by male singers, during the heydays of mid 80s through mid 90s, female rock singers were also very popular especially Ella (Queen Rock of Malaysia), Ziana Zain (slow ballad rock), Shima, Aishah and Ramlah Ram etc.

Malaysia king of rock ....

They categorize themselves as "rock and roll" band. They're heavily influenced by Queen, in the sense of the operatic mood. The lead guitarist of the band during that era leans more towards the classical rock, like Malmstein style. The lead singer himself was a piano tuner, and that explains why unlike most other bands, many of their songs have piano sound in it. So in the end, they're more like Tesla, Aerosmith, and Mr Big than say 80s Metallica or any other metal band. Which was pretty rare in Malaysian rock scene.

This song ( and video) is about 30 years old. The drummer (Mr Yazit) passed away few months ago. Amy the singer just quit the bad about 2 months ago
