To keep aspiring to be the best Mom to my four children and the best wife to my husband inspiring them all to be better, loving them all through every step. And, to inspire my 6 y.o through my example of my own illness to look at his illness as a gift to help others.

This is exactly what I needed to hear in this moment of my life. In the past 3 months I have been constantly thinking about what I have lost and what I can’t do anymore instead of focusing on what I can still do and hearing her journey is going to help me in mine and help me change my focus. I am not this disease taking my ability to walk, I am still Sandie just a different version. This was so eye opening. Forever thankful Derek 🙏🏻💜

This is more than just an inspiring story. So much is revealed about how two true champions create a massive shift in how what they BELIEVE changes what they PERCEIVE as reality, which determines how they CONCEIVE of what's possible, setting the stage for actions that will destine what they will ACHIEVE at the highest levels, that guides what they will RECEIVE for results. Derek and Amy go beyond telling a wonderful story -- it reveals how to turn breakdowns into breakthroughs. Stories like these provide an "architecture" of transformational experiences worthy of viewing by every youngster in school as well as every senior organizational leader.

What a beautiful lady with such an incredible outlook and spirit! I watched her on DWTS and she was incredible there too. So glad you decided to dance with Amy, it opened up the eyes of many people, and encouraged those people who are hesitate to try new things.

Derek, you have no idea how lucky I am you did this interview. I learned about Amy's story through watching you on DWTS and I'm following her since then. She's been always a huge inspiration to me but this has gotten a whole different meaning when I've been diagnosed 2 yeas ago with MS at pretty much the same age Amy was when she lost her legs. I decided to be as brave as she was and not let the disease stop my life. Thinking positive and not giing up is the most important thing ever, especially with my disease. So once again, thank you for posting this and Amy just for being who she is.

Well, now I don't feel so bad that I still have some tight muscles and one leg is shorter than the other one as a result of hip surgery about 3 months ago. In many ways, this has all been showing me that it's all a blessing in disguise - for instance, my lower back and quads needed some TLC, and I have probably been inspiring a lot of people just by having a good attitude about the whole thing. The trick is to remember that myself.

"I have prosthetic legs" rather than "I'm an amputee": It's "just a language shift" on the surface, only. Words - those we utter out loud and those we utter in our heads - are as powerful as actions, especially when they're taken as truth; accepted as truth. Loving that Amy recognized the need to shift her words to better match and create the reality she envisions. (Edited to add...) Fantastic interview! Feels like your combined energies could change the world - *are changing* the world. Peace.

Don't be afraid to ask for help so you can take care of yourself! It is harder to help other people when you are completely drained. So glad to have run across this clip!! Amy is my favorite DWTS contestant of all time - SOOO INSPIRING!!!! Beyond that she was a great dancer, and the two of you were such a force together. The dance you did with the long table top, her sliding across the top of the table with Derek sliding on the floor at the same time just below her, was so stylish and my greatest memory from the show. Thanks for that incredible season and this opportunity to catch up with both of you together again. Looks like Amy has gone on to do great things. No surprise there.

So inspiring!!! Thank you for this video. Amy, bless your heart! 💓 I love your focus. My share: I was VERY sick, in bed all the time for a year & 1/2 while I have 4 kids. Lots of doctors visits, ER, two surgeries during that time. Finally, I got diagnosed w/ Candida yeast overgrowth in my gut which caused an autoimmune disease and I developed some food allergies along with it. I received treatment for 6 months, now I manage it through diet, vitamins, and exercise. I became a Zumba instructor, I went back for my Master's of Social Work and I'm helping lots of people! I had a similar mental shift when I made a separate meal for my family, feeling sad I couldn't eat it. I realized that I CAN eat good foods and God asks us to be grateful. Focusing on what I CAN eat helps me be happy and have gratitude, which is contagious. 😊

Hi Derek! My name is Brittany Ross. I Am 33 Years Old and I am a huge Dancing With The Stars & World Of Dance Fan!!!!! I love Amy Purdy & I Love You As Well!!!!! I have been a huge fan of yours for a long time!!!!! I watched you both on Dancing With The Stars and I was so incredibly moved, touched and inspired every single time I watched you guys dance together!!!!! I also grew up as a Singer/Dancer/Performer!!!!! I have been a Tap Dancer for 30 Years Now (I started at the age of 3 years old), I did ballet for 7 Years, Jazz for 2 Years, Ballroom for 1 Year, Modern for 1 Year etc.) and I also grew up as a Huge Broadway Baby/Broadway Nut and grew up doing Musical Theater!!!!! I am originally from Maryland/Washington, D.C. where I was born & raised until the age of 18 Years Old. I spent a lot of my childhood in NYC going to see Musicals on Broadway with my parents!!!!! I know pretty much all of the soundtracks to all of the Broadway Musicals at this point!!!!! But then, towards the end of my 8th grade year and beginning of My Freshman Year of High School I started to become gravely ill. About 6 Weeks into my Sophomore Year of high school on December 12th, 2000 at the age of 15 Years Old (just 1 month away from my own sweet 16 birthday, January 13th, 2001) My Life Got Changed Forever!!!!! I was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia) (only found in about 500-1000 kids all over the world per year). My parents & I heard the words "Your Child/Daughter Has CANCER." I was given 3 WEEKS TO LIVE & A 5-15% CHANCE OF SURVIVAL!!!!! My parents were told to say good bye to me and were told that I didn't have a single fighting chance and that there was absolutely no way that I was going to walk out of the hospital alive and on my own 2 feet. I ended up undergoing two extremely intense & aggressive rounds of chemotherapy treatment in the hospital. The first round was 35 Days which included Christmas, New Years and My Sweet 16 Birthday. I was told that I would never live long enough to see my own sweet 16 birthday but then 4 days after turning 16 on January 17th, 2001 I was given the best & greatest birthday gift I could've been given, we were told that I was IN REMISSION & CANCER-FREE!!!!! I was sent home to recover for 3 Weeks and then I went back into the hospital on My Parents 17th Wedding Anniversary (February 4th, 2001) for my 2nd round of Chemotherapy Treatment as an in-patient which ended up being another 45 days (they wanted to make sure that they got it every single little tiny itsy bitsy bit of the Cancer out of my body) and on March 21st, 2001 (the first day of Spring) I was released from the hospital for the Final Time!!!!! I was given a whole list of all of the things that I was told I would never ever be able to do or get to have or get to achieve or accomplish etc. by my doctors. Like I said earlier, we were told I wouldn't make it to see my own Sweet 16 Birthday (Checked that off), then we were told I would never return to High School (I was in 3 High Schools in 4 Years, including moving from Maryland to San Diego, CA at the age of 18 Years Old and being Home Schooled for 2 1/2 Years of High School) (Checked that off), then we were told I would never Graduate from High School which I did on May 12th, 2003 at the age of 18 years old!!!!! Then, we were told I would never move out of my parents house and be independent and on my own (I moved to Denver, CO at the age of 22-23 years old for College at the end of 2006-Beginning of 2007) and attended the Community College of Denver) (Checked that off), in December of 2008 I moved back to San Diego, CA for 1 Month and then in January of 2009 I became a Member of The Disney College Program in Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL (I Am Probably The Biggest Disnerd, Disney Nut, Disney Junkie EVER)!!!!!! I moved to Orlando, FL for 8 Months from January-August of 2009 and worked as a Hostess/In Charge of any and all celebrations at a Restaurant called Boatwright's at Port Orleans Resort : Riverside (my first day of training was on my birthday)!!!!! Then in August of 2009 I returned to Denver, CO to finish up my last 2 Semesters of College and then we were also told I would never Graduate from College and I Graduated from College On May 12th, 2010 (Checked that off)!!!!! We were told that I would never get to sing/dance/perform again which I did in College and continue to today thanks to My Wonderful Husband, Patrick McClellan (we are getting ready to celebrate our 5 Year Wedding Anniversary on Friday, September 28th)!!!!! I was told I would never ever get to meet the man of my dreams or get to have my Fairytale Dream Wedding...I met my now Husband, Patrick McClellan, in March of 2012 and by July of 2012 we were an Official Couple and on September 30th, 2012 He Proposed and I said YES!!!!! On September 28th, 2013 we got the chance & opportunity to have our absolute fairytale dream Wedding (it was pure magic) and we have now been very happily married for 5 YEARS On Friday, September 28th (checked all of those things off)!!!!! He truly is absolutely the man of my dreams, my white knight, my knight in shining armor, my very own real life fairytale Prince Charming and now my King and my Happily Ever After!!!!! We were also told that I would never get to have a home of my very own (we moved into our very own home...3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, 2,447 square feet in Arvada, CO on June 10th, 2016) (Checked that off)!!!!! We have a Dance Studio called the Dance Institute in Stapleton, CO (which we have now been dancing & performing with for going on 6 Years now)!!!!! We were also told that I would never ever get to have a family of my own or ever get pregnant or get to have my own kids (Unfortunately, that won't happen for us due to the fact that on July 16th this summer I ended up having an almost full Hysterectomy but because they ended up leaving my ovaries in but took everything else) they said that if my eggs are viable that there is still the possibility of us being able to have kids through a SURROGATE!!!!! We can also ADOPT so having a family of our very own and being able to have kids is still an option!!!!! Unfortunately, I spent most of the summer recovering & recuperating (it was a 6 Week recovery period). My husband also happens to be an absolutely positively amazing, incredible, fantastic, fabulous, awesome, wonderful, great, phenomenal, excellent, terrific, superb, spectacular, extraordinary SWING DANCER!!!!! He throws me around like a ragdoll and we do all sorts of Swing Tricks & Flips Together!!!!! I do SWING DANCING with Him and He does TAP DANCING with Me!!!!! We have even choreographed routines where we have combined both SWING DANCING & TAP DANCING together!!!!! I am now a MOTIVATIONAL/INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER and have been speaking for almost 18 Years on behalf of Numerous different Organizations & Foundations that help to raise money for CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH & AWARENESS!!!!! This past MARCH I Spoke At 14 EVENTS on BEHALF of ST. BALDRICK'S FOUNDATION (I Am Basically Their Go To SURVIVOR SPEAKER here in COLORADO and they are the largest Private Funder of Childhood Cancer Research in The Country)!!!!! Within the last month or so I decided to create my BUCKET LIST and so I Typed It Up and we have now started checking off items from My Bucket List!!!!! One of my Bucket List Items is to get to come and be in the Audience for both Dancing With The Stars/World of Dance and to have the chance & opportunity to Meet You and spend some time with you and maybe for us even to get to TAP DANCE TOGETHER!!!!! That would be an Absolute Fairytale Dream Come True for ME!!!!! You Are By Far One Of My Very Favorite DANCERS!!!!! We have also now started going and training at a GYM Called NINJA NATION in LAFAYETTE, CO created by None Other Than The Actual AMERICAN NINJA WARRIORS From The Show "AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR!!!!!" They opened up 2 Ninja Nation Gyms here in COLORADO (one in Lafayette...about a 20 minute drive from our house and one in Centennial, CO)!!!!! We wanted to get back into shape and to start getting me back to physical activity but we wanted it to also be fun, enjoyable and we wanted it to be an Adventure!!!!! We didn't want to do the traditional gym work out so we signed up for the Introductory Class which we have now done and then we signed up for a 4-Pack of Classes and we can also go do Open Gyms between 3:00 PM - 9:00 PM for $25.00 each whenever we want and however we want and train on any obstacles that we want. We have now done 1 Other class and our head coach at our gym who we get the Honor & Privilege of Training with, being Coached by and getting to just talk to, hang out with, spend time with is none other than "CAPTAIN NBC -- JAMIE RAHN" From "AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR" Who also happens to be one of our very favorite AMERICAN NINJA WARRIORS!!!!! They Opened the New NINJA NATION GYM In Centennial, CO about a week & a half ago and we went to the Grand Opening where we got the chance & opportunity to meet some of our other very favorite "AMERICAN NINJA WARRIORS" and take pictures with them and have them all sign My Ninja Nation Gym T-Shirt like Grant McCartney (The Island Ninja), Jake Murray, Brian Arnold, Michelle Warnke, Rachel Goldstein etc. We met about 12 of our very favorite AMERICAN NINJA WARRIORS at the Grand Opening!!!!! It was one of the items on My Bucket List!!!!! We also went to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (another item on My Bucket List) and for to celebrate My Husband & My 5 Year Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, September 29th he is taking me on a Very Romantic, Very Special And Fun BREAKFAST Ride on THE ROYAL GORGE RAILROAD!!!!! (Another Item on My Bucket List)!!!!! My Husband truly wants to make all of My Fairytale Dreams Come True!!!!! My Biggest Bucket List Item Though Is My COMMITMENT To Helping Put A STOP AND AN END TO CHILDHOOD CANCER ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!!! I Won't Stop Until A CURE Is Found And CHILDHOOD CANCER NO LONGER EXISTS!!!!!

Thank you for the words the two of you spoke about how you look at what is going on with your body, especially Amy who said she doesn't think of that fact she lost her legs, but that she has two prosthetic legs. It's not the negative of what I don't have, but what I do have. This outlook is what I needed to hear! Thank you kindly!

I loved watching DWTS with you both. Very inspiring. I've been facing a different battle finding out my husband of 24 years has been unfaithful most of those years and has now left for girl half my age. I've learned to trust God over the fear of the future. But the reason I decided to comment is to say thank you for this channel and this interview. I love the part where you both talk about not focusing on the things you don't have, but on what you do have. I think that applies to every scenario where we start to lose hope. Changing the perspective by focusing on who is in your life, rather than who is not, and not focusing on what is missing but what you have is a life changer. I'm going to work on doing just that this week!

Thanks Amy and Derek, you both are so inspiring. I have so many things I want to do but I don’t know how or where to start. I would like to find something to do that would make me feel like I’m doing something to help others and make me feel better about myself but I don’t know how to go to find what it might be. Any suggestions for me? Thank you both again for being who you are and always help us to feel better about ourselves. Love you both.
