PSA kids playing on railroad tracks is dangerous yet so appealing to us young boys. We were like 10 years old in 1989, We touched the third rail, we put clips down on tracks to trigger the gates and we would leave them there until track workers would come and remove them to lift the gates. We started with pennies on the tracks, then the week after moved to small rocks, then big rocks on the track (they explode amazingly) then someone (not me) put a car battery we found on the tracks hoping train would explode. at one point, about half of our class was playing on the tracks after school. Finally, I think the car battery did it because the train actually stopped for that one (this was LIRR, coming from NYC) and we all ran. Next day we showed up and were immediately brought home to our parents by the Police Department. All I remember was not being allowed out for months after school and no dinner that night which was fine because I wanted to hide from my folks under the bed. We heard one of our friends got zapped by the third rail a few weeks later and he lived. However, after seeing some online videos it seems people get stuck to the electrified rail when they touch it so not sure how true that story was. Anyway, reinforce how important it is not to play next to those amazing, awesome and gigantic trains that make a ton of noise and can pretty much crush anything in its path.. Man, maybe I will go lay a quarter down next week, for old times sake.

Thanks for the experiment! Single-framing, I was surprised how little the coins got squashed. Amazing that the nickel and penny seem to have barely been deformed at all, mostly just having their surface features mashed down. The other two look a little closer to what I expected, like those old penny-squashing machines produce. If you ever do this again (after having been featured in LegalEagle's "Things Your Parents Said Were Illegal..." video), it'd be good to say what year each coin was from, since the different metal constituents have varied over time pretty significantly. Also might be good to space them out further, to ensure they don't interfere with each other while being thrown around.

They tend to vibrate off before the train can hit them. Placing them to the side furthest from the slant in the rail helps. Some tape them. Tape glue gets embedded in them and screws them up. Keep in mind, you're on private property when screwing around on the tracks. If you get nailed by a rail road cop, show utmost respect or be prepared to be handed over to local cops...if you're lucky. I sure wouldn't want to be where you were standing when the train went by. I know railroad workers who have dug coins out of telephone poles that got shot there when a train rolled over coins placed on the track.
