Amtrak's Senior Vice-President of High Speed Rail Development Programs - Andy Byford

Rumors have been bubbling about a partnership between Amtrak and Texas Central on the long-delayed Dallas to Houston HSR project. Byford has the credentials to bring projects to completion. He did as Transport for London Commissioner with the recently completed London Elizabeth line and with New York City Transit. This should be very interesting.

Similar to Texas HSR, The Ellis-Don Prairie Link concept proposed for Edmonton to Calgary is a project long overdue and much needed. Both cities are growing at a pace so rapid it's hard to keep track... Last year Edmonton added 63,000 people and Calgary added 85,000 people. Within 20 years each is expected to add at least 1 million new residents and that's on the low end of population projections so a train linking the two would be very valuable especially since there are dozens of flights between the two now but when you add in time to get to the airport, checked in, through security and the board the 45 minute flight you are much better off with a rail connection... If only ANY service had been still available past 1985... Alas...

I wonder if one of the things Amtrak would re-look into the station locations. Especially the Houston station location, that by the Texas central placement that was 6mi away from "downtown"

The Texas Central station location in Houston has a very large area for Transit-Oriented Development opportunities. It's where the acitivy heat map shows much more activity than down town does. There will also be many local transit connection options to down town. Their website says this about the Houston station location... "The terminal will be ideally located in a high-growth area, with easy access to employment centers, including the Galleria, the Energy Corridor, the Medical Center and downtown. The station not only will be a catalyst for economic growth but it also will offer a convenient, efficient and direct network for passengers to and from local transit systems."

IT doesn't matter. Public transportation in Texas is very terrible. the joke is you are going to get tickets from police walking in Texas. Houston Public transportation is very terrible. For the selfish train lovers, they don't care about non car drivers waiting under 100 degrees or walk in hours. They just want the stupid trains.

The houston station location is perfect! Most of the people will be traveling from the suburbs or driving in from the west

Get this done already... I am so sick of the delays that American HSR faces... Personally I am a huge fan of the Brightline West model... Use public ROW space and single track service with passing sections to get the cost down but keep the speeds at reasonable numbers so that it doesn't affect service all that much... Frankly 125 mph/200 kmh is fast enough for MOST HSR applications... Going quicker than that is a luxury that drives up costs astronomically but is obviously worth it in some cases...

I disagree. Whatever is built will outlast you and me, it would be foolish to not go with the proven system that is *60%* faster than what you propose. You must take into account the astronomical amount of time that it will save for each person over the lifetime of the system. I can’t emphasize enough, things as permanent as infrastructure should be done _right_ the first time.

All rail operators in the USA should create a budget service like the Europeans do with Ouigo which offers a Southwest/Spirit Airlines ULCC experience on some train-sets for a fraction of the price of a conventional train seat so that everyone regardless of economic status can afford to travel!

First we need to take the first step of building the bar network. Then low lost operators can ride on the existing infrastructure. But getting that built is the first step. You can’t directly aim for low cost carriers as that proposition will never get approved.
