Amtrak power outage "an unmitigated disaster," Gov. Murphy says
Gov. Phil Murphy called the power outage that brought Amtrak and NJ Transit to a halt for hours "an unmitigated disaster" in a harsh letter to the railroad's chairman. CBS New York's Christine Sloan reports.

@@tonyburzio4107 Compare highway development, maintenance and lane additions and compare those similar investments in transport rail and you will find that we have been massively car centric since at least 1940's, which was the time when most public transport systems were being systematically dismantled. so a small spike in what is ultimately a dearth of investment isn't going to make me go wild. Sure, construction companies are most certainly price gouging government for the work, but what profit based entity doesn't price gouge as much as possible, they'd be dumb not to. Amtrak may be contracted for that corridor maintenance, but there is no excuse for no one knowing or able to follow up. A downed wire could mean anything, for scheduled maintenance not coordinated, to wind damage. Most large transit have an 'operations' group whose sole job is to ensure the system runs and is accountable. Back up buses, diesel engine standby, emergency crews, all should have been planned. Leaving customers in the dark and just blaming Amtrak doesn't cut it, gov. You can't get home on a blame train.

They want accountability but won't provide funding.
I take NJ Transit monthly from Trenton to NYC and the infrastructure is VERY old. Many people don’t bother to pay attention when they look out the windows (the ones that you can actually see through that aren’t covered in dirt or thousands of little scratches) that parts of the line look like it’s falling apart. The covered platform of Newark Penn Station when approaching from the south is literally collapsing with barriers to keep people from walking into danger with a cracked wall having long pieces of duck tape holding it together (comical if it wasn’t so sad). The state and federal government need to get their act together and properly fund this line. The Northeast corridor between NYC and Philadelphia is probably the most heavily traveled train line in the country.
Why put the blame on Amtrak, Governor Murphy? Have you lost your mind?

Why not just charge up an electric car and take two or three charges to get where they are going.
imagine a national emergency
It's a 2min video, I'm 60% in and the actual topic hasn't come up (but I've heard the trains are generally unreliable). I'm out of this narrative
There's going to be a congestion pricing part 2 to help fund Amtrak.
I love how the news station keeps saying "Amtrak owns / maintains the rails", while prominently featuring the Summit Station on the Morris & Essex Lines, which NJT owns & maintains 🤣. The reporter was literally standing outside of the Summit station.
This is why i NEVER EVER EVER wanted to live in New jersey, let alone commute to Manhattan
Wouldn't have happened if they had received proper funding for the last 50 years. This is Exactly why, Amtrack, Commuter Trains & Cargo Trains should run on Separate rail lines! Any why they should be hybrid of electric and deasil engines.
When did it become NJ’s job to find and subsidize Amtrak??? NJT keeps getting the shaft despite single-handedly keeping NYC running. Oh yeah… and thanks to NYC’s congestion pricing even more will be on the trains… and solely reliant on them.

Maybe NJ Transit should look into another rail route that is parallel to the NEC but further West (It would be all run by NJTransit, and then it links back up at Trenton, or maybe the Princeton Station dinky. It would be a nice redundancy. all pie in the sky, but other countries do this kind of thing, especially in a place as densely populated as New Jersey.
The same man calling it a disaster is the reason that the disaster instead of crying about congestion pricing, they should be worried about fixing their own transit

We have close to a trillion $ going to the military, and billions going to support the oil industry. American infrastructure has been failing for years. Much of it was built by engineers that are now retired or long dead. Most need to be completely replaced, and most of the new people have no clue how it works. There is never money for it. One day it will all stop and nothing will work ever again. Then you can walk or hope you have a bicycle.
just a normal day in the new america. why are any of you surprised?
But yet now they want to do congestion pricing in NYC when the infrastructure can’t support the volume of passengers now.
NJT already has the solution, but not enough of them. It's the ALP-45 DP dual-mode locomotive, which can run on electric or diesel!
Meanwhile China built the equivalent to the Interstate system in 217 mph high speed rail in 10 years. We dealing with 1800's infrastructure in good ole USA.
