Superb video of a great train. Really long! Almost twice as many autoracks as Superliners, probably coz of capacity. I went on the Autotrain 10 years ago in May 1998! Awesome K5LA too!

Holy shit a 47 car Amtrak and a P32-8 in the consist 5 stars and a favorite, great job and nice catch.

I'm ridding this train TODAY!!! in a couple hours from Lorton Virginia to Sanford Florida

The max speed for the Autotrain is 72 MPH. They travel at 70. Usually, they reach that speed in areas between city. I rode it a few years ago. We we're 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Folkston has a speed restriction of 50 MPH. Once it leaves North , its full throttle.

You know whats really deceptive, is the fact that you see both the star and the meteor with 2 engines all the time. Makes you think that the second engine is needed because 1 engine isnt powerful enough. but yet you see the autotrain always with two engines pullin in excess of 50 cars half being autocarriers at 70MPH. It's just that I always see the Meteor and Star all the time. Sometimes they come in with 3 engines with one on fire in the smokestack.

I never knew Amtrak did that! I only thought they were a passenger train. I see Amtrak alot where I live but I've never seen one hauling cars! But awesome video!

That thing I said about the autoracks was just a guess of mine, but do notice that the number of Superliners seems to stay the same. But I hope more people take interest in riding trains.

I m not sure of al of the subs, but if you look atlas on Amtraks website, It is th eroute which the Metor travels. I know that NS interchanges in Savannah, You might see it there. The Auto train makes a midnight stop in Florence,SC to service and refuel. Dont know if it still stops there. Nontheless, the autotrain exclusivele runs on CSX line formerly the Atlantic Coast Line. The only two places to see it in daylight is Jacksonville and Richmond.

Does Amtrak Use The P32-8's On the Auto Train Time To Time And Why?

Amtrak needs to make some major improvements in their quality of service for the Auto Train (among other things) to be available to people nationwide.

I'd bet that a lot of those autoracks are empties, they just had to come along for the journey for some sorta reason.

Probably because it would require a lot of money, which Amtrak doesn't have. In fact, a lot of people in Congress (and elsewhere) would like to see the government sell off Amtrak, or simply get rid of passenger railroads altogether, since, for most people, driving or flying is more practical. Building the infrastructure (stations, yards, storage tracks, etc.) for service between 2 more places is simply not seen as cost-effective now--or, most likely, ever.

Whats the max speed or mph for amtrak's auto train and where does this happen? I know it only goes between the DC area and the orlando area.

Why can't Amtrak have more Autotrains instead of just THE Autotrain?

I RIDE THE AUTO TRAIN QUITE FREQUENTLY AND SOMETIMES I SET UP MY GPS JUST TO RECORD THE SPEED OF THE TRAIN. 72 MPH SPEED LIMIT? SOMETIMES THEY DO "CHEAT" A LITTLE BIT ESPECIALLY DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!
