Anybody think Amtrak returning to Grand Central can benefit? Like GC has so many tracks, it would really make use of Grand Central again and will relieve pressure off Penn

i agree except most trains are know thru trains between Boston and Washington and Florida. So doing so would cause those trains to be cut in two which would marginalize Amtrak's profit. And if they move the Albany / Montreal/ Toronto bound trains to GCT them a crosstown transfer would be needed.

Yeah, GCT is so much nicer than Penn, plus the Metro North Penn Station Access Program could work, with the eased up congestion.

I think maybe some of the lines should go there, but Amtrak should stick to Penn. Having the throughway platforms is extremely convenient, the location is great, and having most trains in that one place would make transfers much simpler.

why would you think they would not work there
now this is something you don't see everyday. Amtrak setd diverted to Grand Central. I remember catching amtrak trains at GCT for the 2012 National Train Day event. Imagine if the consists led by Sprinter locomotives werw brought into the terminal by BL20GH
it's great to have all Amtrak trains in one terminal. it the pits to transfer thru the subway to make your connection. in Boston you need to transfer from South station to North station to get from the NEC to noreaster service.

Wish granted, FinX. :-3As part of that Summer repair program at Penn Station, some Amtrak trains are actually being rerouted to/from GCT for the Summer.

The MTA is working on it though who knows when that will happen. The first phase is to bring New Haven Line trains into Penn Station via the Hell Gate Bridge (that would be quite the ride for commuters). The next phase would be to bring Hudson Line trains to Penn Station via the Empire Connection.

During the summer 6 empire service trains are supposed to go to Grand Central because of construction at penn station

I was wondering why Amtrak Trains Go to the Hudson Line. Like where they came from. Sometimes it’s Grand Central or Just Mostly Penn.. I thought it was Weird to have Amtrak Trains at Grand Central 42nd Street.

Mon-Fri All Amtrak trains should terminate at GCT from north and some boston trains but on the Fr-Sun intercity trains goes to penn and empire corridor goes GCT with busing for transfer
it wasn;t until i went to grand central that i realized it wasn;t an amtrak station
As a Chicagoan I thought Amtrak terminated both at GCT and Penn Station
Imagine a Metro-North or LIRR train car on MTA subway lines! (I did not include Amtrak cause it's too big)

MNR AND LIRR equipment are approximately 3 feet wider than their NYC subway brethren, so unfortunately they won't fit. If the dimensions of the subway system allowed it, your idea would be pretty cool to see....

The R44s were actually on the NYC subway for a while before a couple of decades ago where MTA started the process of pulling them into early retirement due to "structural integrity issues". The R44s running on SIR had these issues addressed in two overhaul programs, so that's how MTA is still able to run these things. To summarize, the SIR R44s could still run on the NYC subway. Fun fact: the R211S next generation car is currently slated to replace the R44s by the year 2023 (supposedly)....

I mean like an R44 that was SAS'd for SIR service, not the junky ones that originally ran on the MTA subway system.

how did Amtrak get into grand central I know Amtrak got dual-mode locomotive with 3rd rail shoes but aint the shoes for LIRR 3rd rail to get into Penn station did they run the locomotive into Grand Central in diesel power

I believe the dual modes can use both over-running (LIRR) or under-running (MNRR) 3rd rail.

It would seem that with so much capacity for trains at GC, Amtrak would take advantage of the space and relieve Penn Station which is horribly congested all the time. The crowding is rediculous. Why not run the Canadian departures to Toronto and Montreal through GC, and even the Lake Shore Ltd as well. It makes no sense to waste GC's capacity after the numerous costly renovations. The only use for the tunnels and tracks now seems to go to the homeless inhabitants who live under GC Terminal.
They should send all trains to Grand Central as their normal terminus. And some should go to Penn Station OCCASIONALLY. And LIRR should go to GC STRAIGHT NORMALLY WHEN ESA (East Side Access) is finished.
Hasn't happened since the 1990s!

There was a derailment at Pennsylvania Station yesterday morning.
I like amtrak
How the heck were they able to ventilate all those diesel fumes? The whole premise for GC's tracks being built underground was so they can run electrified trains that wouldn't need ventilation.

Amtrak Empire Service.
Well Amtrak trains barley fit, being designed for the smaller metro north trains. Or the extra space was for steam to go out before electric and diesel was invented. Don't even think superliners will fit at all

Michael Morales This is more than likely an Empire Builder Service, which access Penn Station from the Hudson Line via the West Side Line.

Casual Android I think you mean Empire Service. The Empire Builder runs between Chicago and Seattle/Portland.

Typically, trains using grand central have a cab car on the rear. This train has another locomotive in lieu of a cab car. Why?

Michael Marfil GCT was made to allow Diesel, since there is no cantenary system in GCT
