Amtrak 19 and NS Trains at Atlanta Station

Ойын-сауық

A complicated place to shoot. The Amtrak station in Atlanta has no good vantage point from the ground. It's packed tight in the middle of two interstates with the platform actually extending over one of them, and the station is only barely accessible from the street. So why not shoot it from the air? Well that's the really hard part. How do you shoot a train station over an interstate? Safety regulations would restrict you from flying over a busy highway like that. So I didn't. Fortunately there is a spur that used to go over to a mill where Atlantic Stations now resides. Amtrak and MOW trains often park there. I used it repeatedly when I wanted to cross over the interstate for a different angle. Or I flew above the trains themselves to cross that way. It was like an intricate dance. And I caught a very rare instance of two trains passing each other both going in the same direction. I have never seen that happen there before. It's always two going opposite.

I love these aerial shots!! Many times I've parked at Mecaslin St. and walked up the tracks to set up my camera near the platform. There has been talk of a new multi-modal station in Railroad Gulch downtown, in the general area of the old Terminal and Union stations for years, but it never gets past the planning and hoping stage.

They get two trains a day. Northbound to NYC at 8 pm and southbound to the Big Easy at 8am . That’s it.

Hey GottliebPins, I've noticed a small, dark red car parked near the tracks with someone seated in a chair nearby. Is that you?

Good Grief!! Why does Amtrak stop so far from the station. In some cases, it's a heck of a hike to get to your assigned car.

The rear most cars are right at the base of the passenger stairs. There isn't any passenger platform under the station and Peachtree Street, just a narrow walkway.

Are there any concrete plans to replace this overcrowded station? its way to small for an intercity station.

No. It’s been there a long time and it’s in a decent location.

I've heard passengers complain its to small. it was only designed to be a commuter station. Southern used Terminal Station, but when that fell to ashes, they were forced to use their only other station. Even into the late 70s it was seeing 4 trains a day. The Southern Crescent and The Piedmont.

Amtrak will never spend any money to upgrade that station or build a new one. It’s not like they’re in the customer satisfaction business. They’re a government agency.

@@HotspotsSoutheast They had said that there was no room at Peachtree Statiin to build a desired dining room. Imagine - a "business" that has bled red ink since May, 1971 wanting a dining facility?!

Amtrak and U.S. intercity rail passenger service - very much like the post office - outmoded, mainly useless and worthless. They should both be mainly done away with, but not likely to happen. If this service had any viable future after construction of the interstate system and the growth of airline travel, the private railroads would have pursued it. And this - coming from a big railfan. Crescent is a nice train and I rode Southern Railway System's superior version, and Amtrak's several times to Charlittesville and New York. It WAS a great experience. You see America's back roads - scenery inaccessible by car that can't be seen any other way. It's a peek into the fascinating railroad culture.
