The Plymouth Valiant (first appearing in 1959 as simply the Valiant) is an automobile which was manufactured by the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation in the United States from the model years of 1960 through 1976. It was created to give the company an entry in the compact car market emerging in the late 1950s. The Valiant was also built and marketed, without the Plymouth name, worldwide in countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland, as well as other countries in South America and Western Europe. It became well known for its excellent durability and reliability, and was one of Chrysler's best-selling automobiles during the 1960s and 1970s, essentially keeping the company afloat during its hard economic times.Road & Track magazine considered the Valiant to be "one of the best all-around domestic cars.
Beginning in 1971, a badge-engineered version of the 111 in (2,800 mm) wheelbase Dodge Dart Swinger called the Valiant Scamp was offered. This used the Dart Swinger 2-door hardtop body shell with Valiant front sheet metal and dual taillamps carried over from the 1970 Dodge Dart.1972 saw the Valiant's best sales ever,[23] with 330,373 sold.[24]For 1973, the vent wing windows were deleted from the Scamp, and all models were given a new grille and front bumpers able to withstand damage at a 5 mph (8.0 km/h) impact, as well as steel beams inside the doors to protect vehicle occupants in side-impact collisions as mandated by NHTSA. The door beams, the new bumpers and their impact-absorbing mounts, a rubber-booted telescoping system attached to the car's structure, added mass to the Valiant. At the same time, engines were being progressively detuned to comply with increasingly stringent emissions regulations. Performance and economy suffered as a result.Through the early 1970s, the Valiant took more than 40% of Plymouth's total sales volume.[25] These models also had considerable success in foreign markets. Worldwide, Chrysler affiliates and subsidiaries sold American- or Canadian-made Valiants from complete knock down kits, as well as locally designed and engineered Valiants and Valiant-based vehicles incorporating a mix of North American and local design and components.

I bought this kit and was so impressed with the detail of the chassis and the amount of well done parts, that I went back and bought 2 more. Stock car detailers and modifiers alike will find that the underpinnings of this kit makes an EXCELLENT jumping off point for all manner of stock car project, from dirt to superspeedway.

I had that kit 45 years ago. I found this on one of the shelves, in a small store, some miles from home. I bought it and showed it to my dad, he gave his usual nod. Lol! That kit was originally a Petty short track racer. The new packaging depicts this one as a Valiant.......I am thinking someone doesn't know Plymouth's from Dodge's very well. The body is based on a 1971 - 72 A- BODY Dodge Dart. I am sure anyone who knows the difference, will have noticed that already. The kit is very detailed for it's time ( old kit) You sir, have done a great job on that kit. Thanks for your time.

When I was 16 I really wanted to go down to Markley Motors in Fort Collins and order a Dart Sport Kit car to match my 340 Dart Sport. For around $8000 I could have ordered one, picked it up at the dealer I. A huge box, well, probably numerous crates would have been delivered, and I would have built my own 1:1 scale In my garage. Mopar built these kits over a 5 (ish) year period and sold a couple hundred. Very cool build. It’s on my list.

In the old days these cars were offered for sale to racers, and they did them up any way they wanted too, you did it up like you would have if you were racing it.......... that's great!

Your videos are like ASMR for me. Your voice, the music while painting, the model building process, the whole kit and caboodle! Great build! I am going to show my butt now...I love the Barracuda; I love the Duster; until today, I did not know they started life as Plymouth Valiant manufacturer/dealer option packages.

In fact, this is as exact as a stock car model kit could be to a real car. The parts in this kit allow you to make an exact copy of "a" Chrysler Kit car from that program in the mid to late 70's. The idea was you could go to your Plymouth or Dodge dealer and buy a race car, partially or totally complete for about $8000. You could also buy all the parts, and put them together with some welding and mechanical skills! The decals are a fantasy, so you could build your own version, but several hundred of these were out there in 1:1 scale. There are lots of photos on the net, and there is even a facebook Chrysler kit car group. Many still exist and are run in Vintage or street stock racing classes. It is really a Dart Swinger, it and the Scamp were exactly the same except for the grille, its close enough for me. They are of moderate difficulty to build, it just takes a little patience and grit, but the kit will reward you with a fine example of a popular Short Track Late Model stock car of the 70's!

Great way to spend my Saturday morning watching Chris build another cool model kit. I remember the Valiant Scamp equivalent to the Dodge Dart Duster (I think) back in the day. I owned a Valiant and didn't like it so I sold it and bought a fast Ford!

Whoa! This one looks so good! My dad and uncle used to race back in the 60's and 70's, so I'm very familiar with these old stockers. It all looks so eerily realistic, because the real cars just looked like big model kits. Great painting, one of my favorites. I'm still working on Petty's only Ford Torino Talledega (the one he used to coax MOPAR into cutting him a better deal or he was gonna run more Fords). Thanks for the video!

Love how you can take a kit that I've had issues with and get it together looking good. I may be inspired to see if I can finish mine up now. When I started it, I was building everything "perfectly" as I could. Now I enjoy just getting one together and being able to look at it and not worry if it's perfect underneath. I think you say HAVE FUN - that's the key. These oild kits don't always just fall together. But they will go together if you can deal with the short comings.

Hpiguy , I really think you belong in the Guinness book. For building a record amount of quality built models within a short period of time . How the hell do you do it ? I have 6 started but not completed. I am in a funk ! I can NOT start and finish a model. One model I know I wont get back to anytime soon is the Johan Chrysler Turbine car. Its close. All body parts are painted. Interior painted,Engine painted with metalizer Almost complete. I MUST HAVE A.A.D.D.! I mean... is this normal for model car builders at some point in their building "career" ?lol ANYWAY. 👍🏻's 👆 to all of your videos. You should open up a car model museum where you live.

Chris I think you're really good at what you do and I do appreciate your expertise. After picking up and building this Valiant Scamp my model had probably the worst flashing I've seen on a model in some time. The flashing was in the worst places and sometimes in such huge amounts, I thought it was the part! It is a good looking model when you finish and it is complicated. Thanks for the help. Folks will need it on this one.

I think that's how Alan Kulwicki started...the short tracks of Wisconsin. And, I can attest to enamel paints on tires. Back in the day, I tried enamel on tires to make wide white walls on some of my car kits.

I saw one of these at my hobby shop. After seeing your build it appears this is a very detailed kit, much moreso than I would have expected. I'm not sure if that thing behind the seat is to cool the driver or the rear axle lube. I thought your build looked FANTASTICAL! Might just have to buy one of these cool kits. Testers enamel will not dry on the tires...I have heard tamiya acrylic white works well but haven't tried it. If that is indeed the case, cheap acrylic craft paints might work as well and save the Joe blow guy money. My two cents. That's a mean looking car!

I love your builds, I just wish the models were more accurate. The Scamp and the Swinger were nearly identical, I owned a 70 Swinger and my son still owns a 71 Scamp, this model has a Swinger grill, the Scamp had the same grill as the Duster.

  • @Lustle

Whole front end (body wise) is different really. Different fenders and hood. Darts/demons had the corners of the hood turned towards the fender and the fender has an angle too, so the nose of the hood sticks out a bit more (similar to early mustangs). While Scamps/Dusters have the "flat" hood, where the front of the hood is a flat line right to the fenders. Nothing is interchangeable between the two. They call this a valiant scamp, but as a guy who owns a 72 valiant scamp, it isn't.

  • @nathanadrian7797

@@Lustle The model is a Swinger, Swinger hood, grill and bumper/rollpan. As long as you change every body part(fenders, grill and bumper), the front end of a Swinger will bolt on to a Scamp and vise-a-versa, the body lines are identical, only the wheel openings are different(square cut on the Scamp, swept back on the Swinger).

  • @Lustle

@@nathanadrian7797 Oh I know it's a swinger lol. Specifically its a 1970 (two tail lights, not four like a 71/72). Been around mopars my whole life. And that's what I meant by "interchangeable". You can't take a hood off a dart and put it on a scamp, or a fender. You'd have to switch out the whole front end.

Hi, I really enjoy your builds and have tried to watch all of them. I am a little anal , (lol) so I do sand the seams a little more, I loved your build on the green and white 57 ford, so I decided to built one myself. The biggest problem I have is the paint. I have tried Rustoleum in the past and even on this build and for some reason it just doesn't want to dry. It seems it takes days to completely dry. DO you have any ideas on what I might be doing wrong. I use touch tone primer which is enamel base. On most of my cars I use dupli-color paint that I get at my local auto store , but Rustoleum has should a great variety of colors. Sorry for the long post. :-)
