Happy Birthday Jordan, hope you had an amazing birthday! If you guys are staying longer in the Netherlands I can recommend going a bit more to the north around Alkmaar. Alkmaar itself is great but when renting a car for example, just driving around places like Stompetoren and Avenhoorn is beautiful on a sunny day. Here you can expect the wide open fields with the tulips and windmills. There is actually a windmill museum in Schermerhoorn that is worth a visit. Anyhow, hope you guys have an awesome weekend.

Hihi so much visits to Amsterdam by bike or when rainy by train, because i live near in Haarlem but never ever noticed the unicorns... That made me laugh!! The canal cruise i love It, you can also another time take it with diner or a tapascruise also very nice and that is an open boat, lovely when the weather is sunny. Belated happy b-day en i enjoyed youre vlogs.

same here. Then again most times I've been there were walking to work from the railway station and back, so taking in the sights was the last thing on my mind.

They are a special kind of unicorns, also called hippocampi: seahorses with one horn. Together with sea god Neptune, lions, gods with laurel wreaths, dolphins and fish, they surround the Amsterdam city maiden, with her shield with the three Andrew's crosses. The city of Amsterdam, which has become rich from the trade on the world's seas, wanted to show in the decoration of the enormous new town hall that the sea gods and mythical sea creatures were favorable to it.

And you have to take in consideration that "the palace" was build as Amsterdam's city hall to show off their wealth from overseas trade in the 17th century.

Amsterdam actually got rich from the trade at the European seas, the Baltic and North Sea especially. Wheat, beer, wood, wine, the boring stuff of the bulk trade, week in week out. The Dutch Republic did more than half of Europe's trade, the merchant fleet was bigger than that of France, Spain and Britain combined. But a the unloading of aship returning from the East Indies would draw a crowd for all the new, exciting and exotic stuff. Despite it was only a tiny share of the trade, the Dutch Republic and especially Amsterdam felt on top the world at the time the City Hall was build in the 1650's, because it was. It's a warm but self glorifying embrace of the world that is reflected throughout the whole building.

Haarlem is not a little city, and it is not north of Amsterdam but west! 😃
