I literally went ''Stop, you're butchering the flavor!'' and then went to check if anyone else had commented on this or if I'm the odd one out. Kibbeling spices are a thing and if you put salt AND pepper AND lemon juice AND garlic sauce on the fish it'll just kill the flavor. It's also pretty unnecessary as kibbeling spices are savory enough on their own, so you don't need salt or pepper But hey at least I know what I'm going to have for dinner tomorrow :'D

Agreed on the salt and, somewhat, the pepper. But the kibbeling spices or fish spice they tend to throw on it are really horrible. Kibbeling needs nothing but a bit of sauce. (like Lekkerbek which is also very good, if you get real Cod that is)

The Fries with mayo and peanut (sateh) sauce is freely translated, "Fries of war". It hints to the dutch mayonaise sauce and the Indonesian sateh sauce. The Indonesian independance war in 1948 when they broke away from dutch colonial rule. We still love indonesian food and is a well traveled location by dutch tourists. If you ask any dutch person, they all have their own favourite sauce on their fries.

So... This music with the accordion is not Dutch but sounds more Irish. Food culture Amsterdam? :) Our country sure has more to offer than only in Amsterdam, the city is so crowded with tourists 24/7 that you actually don't get a real and good view. Even us Dutchies feel like tourists in Amsterdam....Our fries we eat with mayonnaise/ frietsaus which is more sweet than Belgian mayonnaise. The main combinations we eat are just with frietsaus, or 'oorlog' which is frietsaus with peanut sauce and raw onions, the other version is 'speciaal' which is frietsaus with curry and raw onions. The main main main snack you have not shown us is the Dutch 'kroket', you actually missed out on the most important snack our country has, next to the 'frikandel' :p

Miss C, the music in the beginning has a distinctive "Scandinavian" sound, but, here's the weird bit, it's actually Dutch as the traditional music from the Northern part of the country is essentially not that different from traditional Scandinavian (Spelman) music. Too, in the olden days, Scandinavian musicians (Spelmanna) travelled along with the cattle drovers down from Denmark and East Frisia, many stayed for the harvest, paid by means to spent the winter in barns with meals provided and in return they worked in the harvest, made music and did all sorts of work that needed doing during the cold and dark winter months. They would usually help out during lamming and then head back up north to return in the late summer, early autumn. This way of life ended only just before the first world war, back then there weren't really any restrictions as to traveling (except Germany, of course) and people could work where they could find it. A very hard life for sure, so I'm pretty certain the music was a well deserved and much beloved break from the daily drag.

Good comment! Good to know for foreigners about the fries: we (the Dutch) call it "patat" or "friet". The main difference is that north of the main rivers we say "patat", south of the main rivers we say "friet". Also, mayonaise is the traditional sauce.

The herring is NOT pickled. It is raw salted herring. Pickled herring is also available but it is called rolmops. Tastes very different than raw. They eat it on the tail in The Hague. In Amsterdam it is more often cut into chunks and served with a toothpick. This Canuk's Dutch pronounciation is not too hot, but congrats on being adventurous and trying the herring. One thing missing that most foreigners are crazy about is croquets (tubular) or bitterballen (same content but ball shaped) served with Dutch coarse ground mustard.

We ate alot of what they called frite met which was french fries with their mayonaisse which is very different from ours it was yellow and i was obsessed. But my favourite was croquettes with mustard, boy did i miss them when i came back to Canada. My parents were from there and it warms my heart seeing anything to do with the Netherlands.

Hey man, great videos. It didn't seem like you enjoyed the herring too much haha! Anyway, the trick is to always ask them to slice up the herring into quarters (that's why they give you 4 pickles), then simply put some onions on it, and pickle on top and eat it in one bite, it is a lot more delicious. I was just there a few months ago, great place!

Luke, the haring (herring) you are eating is not pickled. You can buy pickled (=marinated) herring in pots in supermarkets. In Germany it is called Bismarck herring. What you're having is indeed herring, preserved in salt. Even though it does not taste that salty.

I actually didn’t like the herring but my brother loves it. Sweden loves the pickled herring too. They do some lovely pastries/cakes, quite similar to doughnuts. Can’t remember the name but very yummy. Am loving your travels by the way 😀

@Bennie Leip... a Goudse stroopwafel is supposed to be thin, you can get thicker ones but those aren't traditional Goudse. Having said that Rudi's stroopwafels (where he bought his) are considered among the best freshly made stroopwafels in the country and are made according to an old recipe.

For some miraculous reason this video popped up on my home page here.. oh yes, Albert Cuypstraat market is a great place to taste all sorts of varieties of foods and snacks. Happy that you enjoyed the stroopwafels, little suggestion for pronunciation: it's like "strope" and the second bit the "a" sound should be like how it's used in a word like "bayou" . I was very surprised about the kibbeling and the use of pepper and lemon! Never saw that done in all my 66 years of being Dutch. But kibbeling is deliciousss!!! Proud of you that you weren't scared of trying the herring! It's not really raw, it's brined. Best way to really taste this omega-3 bomb fish is without onion & pickles, but with it, is just a custom with a history that can be googled. Poffertjes: oh lord, delicious! And I can guarantee even more delight if you get a portion and have some liquor added as topping, like either Amaretto, or Grand Marnier or Cointreau!!! That is heaven! whoop x2 to me... The "fries".. now here's a nice thing to know: if you cut my country in two parts down the middle north and south, in the north we speak of "patat" and in the south it is called "friet" . Somewhere down the line I got the hunch that you are from Canada when I heard you pronounce "out".. and yep, confirmed in the end. So proud of my Dutch self haha. Be well
