Ampule Medication Administration Nursing Clinical Skills
Glass ampules are often used to store medication, and as a nurse, you'll need to know how to use them.
In this video, I demonstrate how to clean an ampule using alcohol prep, how to open (or break) an ampule, as well as how to dispose of the ampule.
In addition, I show how to use an ample filter straw while drawing up (withdrawing) medication, how to use the syringe, and how to remove the air bubbles in the syringe.
This is another video in our series on clinical nursing skills.

RealAndrea because you knew your stuff girl congrats boo
You are the reason I passed the NCLEX! Thank you!!
Interesting to see the different devices used in America. In Australia we don't use a filter straw rather we have a blunt drawing up needle. Instead of using a gauze we just use an unopened alcohol wipe to hold the ampule as it breaks. Also, on our bottles we have a black dot, we need to face the dot away from ourselves for it to break open without smashing the glass everywhere. We still snap it off the same direction - the broken glass away from ourselves. Thought it was interesting to see that you wipe the outside of the ampule with alcohol wipe probably a good idea. We are just taught to insert the needle without touching the edges. Thanks for your video. Always good to see how other people do it.
I am here after doing so awful on those click and drag questions. I hope this will help. Always insanely good. We appreciate you
Hi Nurse Sarah, I just wanted to say thank you for your amazing nursing videos and the great explanations that you give. I've always used your videos for reference since the start of nursing school and I just found out today that I passed my NCLEX! Your videos definitely played a major role in this so thank you and keep up the great work! God bless.
Hello there! Thanks for all the hard work you and your husband do to provide these awesome videos. Would you guys please make a Salary video on Surgical first assistants. I'm considering going that route and would like more information. I've tried but honestly cant find much info on salaries. Thanks peace and blessings 🙏🏽🙂
Thank you for this! My instructor told me to invert it like a normal vial and a bunch of it leaked out. I thought there must be a better way!
Thank you so much, I'm able to administrate subcutaneous injections to my cat, but never get a medication from ampula before only prep injections for one dosis. Yours videos help me a lot on how to do it properly in a safe and confident way.
Thank you very much your channel’s help me improve on my nursing career.
Blessings, I just started nursing school I thank you for the video.
It still boggles my mind that we still use these devices and its almost 2020!! Great instruction though. Covered all the points and well done as usual.

Its about cost ..and the cost to retool the manufacturing equipment.
great video as always, Sara! Ty!
What happen if the broken tiny pieces accidentally inject to you? I have been injected in my hand 3 weeks ago and still hurts and swollen i thought it was a normal but i have a feeling it's cause on the broken tiny pieces that scratches inside my veins so that's why it's hurt and swollen. Thank you.

Thank you so much, Sarah! You are greatly appreciated😊
On my clinicals rotation I've see registered nurses smashing the head of the ampoule with any object, never saw a filter device before, didn't know it even existed LoL. I've never seen anybody cleaning the ampoule with alcohol, honestly nobody does that, not even the connectors of the IV drip. FYO I've doing my rotations on public hospitals

Your video helpful , Sarah.
Thank u! My dog has syringomyelia, and has awful fits, if they go on for longer than 5 minutes - I have to give her diazepam to bring her out of it … from those dreadful little glass vial things 😆 Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪

Aww your poor baby! Im sorry to hear. Im glad you're there for her. I didn't know syringomyelia caused "fits," almost sounds like she's having seizures if diazepam brings her out of it? I know if it was even going for 60 secs I'd freak out and give her diazepam if it looked lime a seizure... after a few minutes a dog can overheat. Ive also heard wetting their paws helps cool them down during that. I wish they gave my dog who just passed some injectable drugs so they'd work better/in the end he wouldn't eat/take pills. In the US the vets really suck and don't care in all of my experiences here. Best of luck and thank you for being there for your fur baby.
Try opening an ampule in an Ebola outbreak in the DRC (Congo) NOT COOL. I hate them......great video

Single use. Toss it.
Hopefully I don't waste 600 dollars worth of medication anymore 😂😂
