Ampeg THE FRIDGE shootout 810 comparison

Музыка

The comparison covers 4 pieces of Ampeg's classic - 810 cabinet also known as "The Fridge".
You can find out how the vintage one from 1974 sounds, as well as more recent builds dated 2004, 2007 and 2008. A popular Eminence Legend B810 swap is also documented.
Every sample was recorded with an Ampeg V-4B amplifier with controls set exactly the same. The amp reacts differently for each cab which can be observed in drive levels.
Feel free to comment and share your thoughts. Cheers!

The 74 sounds amazing! Great mid clarity, and less low end:) the cts drivers were basically guitar speakers very low Xmax low wattage that's what all these new cabs are missing! I buy a cab I expect to be able to blow the speakers if I happen to drive them to much;)

I thought the '74 was the stand out as it had great definition and was very versatile. I suspect this would have a lot to do with the well worn speakers though.

I think well worn speakers are a definite factor, but I'd like to think the lower wattage speakers also help a lot with the definition and versatility of the '74 cab. I completely agree that it was the stand out of the bunch.

I think they got progressively worse sounding as they progressed into the future. I would like to have an early cab with the removeable dolly. I have a SVT Classic cab from about 2000 and heads from about 2000 and 2005ish. I'd like an early 70's v4b and a mid 70's svt, just for old time sake. I mean I need. NEED

I love how for once the cab is miked with a proper dynamic mic with a reasonably flat mid EQ instead of a scooped kick drum mic you usually see. I like the mids in my bass tone and I like being able to get them through to the audience! :) I'd take a friggin' SM58 over any kick mic any time and get the low end from a DI.

The 6 x 10 HLF. Goes Deeper . It's ported on thee bottom , and has the horn if u are into alot of tremble in your sound .. 8 x10 every set of 2 speakers are sealed off from everything .which ins called Infinite Baffle ..the 6 x 10 has alot more freedom when playing 3 notes together example Pink Floyd Shine On You Crazy Diamond part 6 ... My playing is Classic rock and it's great for that . I tried out both cab playing Shine On and the clear choice was the 6 x 10 .And i have used it playing at churches as well as out ..And it fit in my Trans Am con. 02. Put top down , fold down rear seat ,move drivers seat forward and put in ,load bass case , put top up ready to go .. It is a little lighter than the 8 x 10 But it is 300 watts also .. It is easier to move than a 4 x 10 ..I had that cab first . The wheels and push/ pull bar really make it easu to move ....

They all sound different, but only the old '74 cab has that midrange peak. The others all have less midrange and more bass, so seem more scooped. In the mix it was harder to pick out the differences, more so with the pick. On the first demo, that midrange push really helped the bass growl and defined the notes better.

To my ears I feel the 2007 Vietnam model sounded the best to me. Granted the USA 2004 had a tad more low end but the 07 Vietnam model had more midrange punch and top end clarity. I personally own the 07 model and I use a 2006 USA made SVT-CL head and it is like a match made in heaven. It has a huge bottom end and that classic Ampeg tone in spades.

surprisingly the 2008 China cab came out first in my opinion. it was a perfect middle ground between the warm low mid punch of the '74 and the definition of the USA and Vietnam cabs but without the muddiness of the former and the harshness of the later.

I really like the Eminence loaded cab. I'm a guitar player, though, so I'm kinda coming from the perspective of wanting a bass player I can hear, rather than a really round, soft bass tone. To me it went Emi loaded, then the 04, the 74, then the Chinese one. The two US ones were pretty close in my opinion, though.

I know about the antipathies for the late 90s till 2005/6 cabinets, but nevertheless I'd go with the 2004, preferably the AV Version with a silver front. It's close to the 74, especially in combination with pic playing. There is no big danger to damage the speakers compare to an old 74, and if this happens, you can buy them without takin' out a loan, cause they're still available. But without a doubt, the 74 is wonderful relict

  • @henryp.sylvia9060

I respect everyone's individual opinion but I think everyone needs to keep in mind that the 1974 cab has WAY more use on the speakers than the newer cabs. And did you notice that the magnet structure on the 1974 speakers are different? Imagine what the newer cabs are going to sound like when the have about 40+ years worth of wear and tear on them. I had a 1970 Ampeg SVT head (Linden, N.J.) and matching cab and it was AWESOME! Still have the head but sold the cab. Also tried a 8x10" from about 1985 and it didn't have the clarity, low end definition or overall balance of tone the 1970 cab had. P. S... I sold the cab but I will never sell the head!

my 2 cents,... I really wish this stud wasn't wearing a competitors tee, the guy is a stud, he got groove, but, they should show the knob positions and should have piped in a recorded track instead b/c the player's performance will have a slight variance between takes. anal, I know. but it would truly remove all variables, and come closer to the absolute truth. btw, it all sounded f'in fantastic!!! And that guy is an awesome player.

China for its tight sound and the USA 1974 for its classic tones, I didnt think much of the Vietnam cab

Very thorough, much appreciated! Viet Nam is the clear winner.

If you were going to go through all that trouble why would you bother putting the bass mixed so far behind the music? I personally would have done no music, at least through half the video. Too subtle of differences to hear in a mix.

The mixes in the first half sound fantastic thru my monitors. The bass level is about what it should be in any good mix. The differences are very audible and I think a useful comparison. The problem with the mix demo is not the mix... it's the usual computer speakers we are listening to. I suggest for any musician to invest in decent headphones (such as Sennheiser 650's) or a good pair of powered monitors connected to your laptop.

What is the point of comparing bass cab in the mix when the bass is to loud? There are samples both in mix and without mix mate - what is the problem:)?

Should have put the Mix in the last half and the non mixed in the first half. Otherwise, great video.

Mateusz Piotrowski - the way you did this is perfect, this is how they should be presented, properly in a mix. Well done.

The Chinese one sounds very muted, it's more bass-focused and muffled as if you're palm muting every note. The 1974 one sounds fine I guess for a more vintage tone, but wouldn't really cut it for my style. The speakers have less power and are very midrange-focused, they don't have a lot of bass or treble. The difference between the vietnam one and usa one from the 2000's is almost nonexistent. In a blind test I think the 'nam one is a little bit more clear and balanced, and stands out in the mix *slightly* more. But that's probably just because the speakers in it were swapped. Really the difference is negligible. My main cab for the last 12-13 years has been a 1990 USA-made 810E. Early 90's - late 2000's Ampeg era was the best era in my opinion. That was the golden age of the brand before they started outsourcing a bunch of stuff to china, putting out cheap shit and ripping off their customers

I liked the legend drivers the best, except in clips 4 and 5. There I think I liked the cts drivers, but since they can't handle 300 watts that cab is a no go for me. I don't like how dark the particle board cab sounded and I also didn't like how bland and generic the MIC 08 cab sounded.

Honestly my favorite "fridge" is the 2×15 model. Same dimensions as the 810, just with essentially 2 1×15 cabs stacked (both ported.) have one from the 90's that is just killer for bass and synth.

Put 2 speakers from each cab in the other ones.
