    I remember playing this game when it came out and being greatly disappointed with it, wondering what happened to the subtlety and intrigue and general Frictional Games quality, so when I tried out Soma, Frictional Games' next game, I was so impressed that I thought "This is what I was talking about! Where were these guys when they were making Amnesia 2?" - Going back to these games now, only now do I find out that Frictional actually didn't develop this game at all, and it was instead developed by The Chinese Room, which also developed 'Everybody's Gone To The Rapture'. Now things make so much more sense.

    Amnesia 2 is a bit short on gameplay, but it nails its setting/storyline and has all the subtlety and intrigue you're talking about. You can't give Frictional TOO much credit.

    RussianGuyovich I guessed that was what the game was going for before it even fucking released. What I didn't expect was for them to take everything that was good about the original and throw it away. They could and should have just taken the original game and its mechanics and add a new story over it. Would have been far better then the stripped down disappointed we ended up with

    Some Victorian factory owner tries to improve the working conditions in his factory through automation and ends up nearly bankrupting himself in process. Desperate, he and his sons go searching for some artifact. The artifact gives him visions of the terrible atrocities of the 20th century and of his sons dying in the Battle of the Somme so he kills them to spare them the horrors of WWI. He then returns to England and uses the artifact to turn his factory into a human sacrifice machine or something and also starts turning people into Manpigs. Then I think he gets sick or something and his soul splits between Mandus and the Engineer. Anyway that’s what I can remember

    I watched a let’s play of this game and the story was really interesting to me. I thus went on a google spree, came across the Wikipedia page for it and dug up more information about it. I found my now favorite book ever The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson. It was one of the books that inspired HP Lovecraft and where the development team got the idea for the pig humanoids. Random facts from a google diver and run on sentence master.

    4:00 I agree, if you either see or hear a pigman literally trotting around for more than a couple of seconds then it's time to hide. Otherwise, it's just ambient noise and nothing else. The sewers are a prime example: I heard some pigmen in a little labyrinth I had to enter, but as it turned out they just seemed to be in the freaking walls or something because I met nothing.

    I really was looking forward to this game. The first one was the first horror game that legitimately scared me and the custom stories kept me occupied for weeks. Taking away most of the things that make you dread the monsters such as insanity, limited oil, non-regenerating health, etc, really put me out of it. And with the custom story support taken out, I have absolutely no reason to buy it. Sucks really.

    THANK YOU! I remember when they first started talking about removing all these things how disappointed I was... and everyone told me I was overreacting. Were all the custom stories masterpieces? No but they extended the life of the game. I was seriously disappointed and have yet to even think of buying it until they re-include the new things in the old level editor... so then we can play with the fun new things, in the fun old game, limited oil, insanity, and whatnot. So thank you. I'm very glad I'm not the only one seriously discouraged with this one, while being absolutely in love with the first.

    I fucking hated the insanity meter. It was the most arbitrary, annoying thing I have *ever* seen in a game. At the *very* least it should have gradually restored whilst you stood in light, but no. If you were stuck, out of light, and had to traverse monster infested areas your character would break down upon sight of a monster because he hadn't successfully used his brain in too long.

    i thought the invisible "Sanity Meter" in A:DD was just fine, since it wasn't a displayed meter like in Eternal Darkness (there was the little brain icon in the menu, but that was it). They only active gauge the player had for their sanity in A:DD was how wobbly the visuals got, which replaced the missing challenge that combat would have given us. Sanity as mechanic in A:DD worked because it was still nebulous and mysterious. You never knew how sane you actually were until finding the very rare and finite drug that brought you back to normal. i say this because my deepest root memory of A:DD was having escaped the Gatherer chasing me and having none of that sanity candy to heal the brain with and only 1 tinderbox, so I gathered my real world nerves, light the closest candle, and stared at the flickering flame for at least 10 minutes in-game, telling myself I was going to be okay as my heart pounded in my chest. and then i made it to the prison cells of the castle's dungeon and my memories kind of locked themselves away after that, as if my brain knew that forgetting would be good for me, this time...

    im sorry but I cannot find amnesia a machine for pigs to be scary, the loss of the sanity meter and inventory is what did that, in the original the sanity meter meant you couldn't look at the monsters or stay in the dark too long which kept you on your toes and made it hard to judge when you should move since you cant look at the monsters, in this game the only concern ppl have is the lantern flickering out when you get close to a monster, this I find just nerfs the game since the lantern turns into a monster radar and since theres no oil in this game which is another reason why it isnt as scary as the original, you can have the lantern going as much as you fucking please, anyone who finds a machine for pigs to be scary is either lying out of their ass or has just never played a horror game before in their life

  • @handsomegamer6964

    @handsomegamer6964

    Wrong. A game isn't made scary by some gimmick telling you how you should feel. It's in the same bag as jumpscares - cheap stuff that desperate people overrely on, because they can't craft actually engaging environment (and because it's becoming the mainstream shortcut to "horror"). And inventory? That is the last relevant thing in a horror game experience. In fact, not having one and having to do extra walking can make you get the most out of the atmosphere, provided the game is well made. Unlimited flashlight is a better point, yet still not gamebreaking, take Condemned for example: you literally have to have the flashlight on at all times to even see where you're supposed to go, because the game is pitch-black almost all the time, and it still is creepy as hell, because it has atmosphere and true horror elements, which are all about your own imagination, not your HUD. If anyone considers stuff like the sanity meter an element which makes the game scary, they're just wrong and probably have just never played a horror game before in their life (to quote a certain gentleman), i.e. if you NEED something like the sanity meter to feel scared, then you are the problem, not the game when it removes it. Also, you're kind of contradicting yourself, your last sentence clashes with the whole message you've been trying to get across.

  • @zyad48

    @zyad48

    Handsome Gamer rlet me explain what I meant by why the loss of the sanity meter nerfed the atmosphere and difficulty of the game, Amnesia a Machine for pigs losing the sanity meter means you never need to worry about looking at monsters for too long or staying in the darkness for too long, in the dark descent you needed to hide from the monsters while at the same time making sure you were in a good hiding spot WHILE you made sure your sanity didnt lower too low since the lower it gets the scarier the atmosphere gets for the player, you obviously either never played dark descent or while playing never had your sanity lower to the point of "..." which by that point will start to get you hallucinations of monsters that arent there, doors opening on their own suddenly really you havent even gotten that low on the sanity meter in amnesia dark descent have you? Also the loss of a inventory so you cant look at your health is an automatic fail and the sign of the devs trying to make you feel scared about your health but the problem is it always regenerates, look I dont need a sanity meter to have a game be scary, quite the contrary, I find Outlast to be much scarier than amnesia and MILES scarier than a machine for pigs and srsly did you find a machine for pigs scary? if so then you're a pussy, srsly that game is NOT scary, the lantern acts as an enemy radar which effectively nerfs all of the difficulty AND the scariness that the game tried to achieve, its like being scared of Slender The Eight Pages which lets be honest is the most abysmal attempt at a horror game in history, and if you say that FNAF is just as bad in the horror department first of it is scarier than slender, second its main drawing points are the difficulty and the lore which is what the creator really focused on

    It is actually possible to see a lot of stuff during the streets part of the game. It depends on where you look at a certain time. For example, there is one part where you see a woman get attacked by a Wretch before her door slams shut and another one where you see a bunch of Engineers dragging a corpse down into the sewers if you peek though a gate behind a bunch of trucks. If you are attentive during this part, there's a lot of hidden gory stuff you can find.

    2:59 And that right there is why I didn't like Red Dead Redemption. The main protagonist's whole goal is to get his family back but since I was never shown nor introduced to them prior to them being taken away I have no personal stake in that goal. Fallout 3 for instance let you get to know your dad before (spoiler warning) he get's whacked by Colonel McEvilDude. That gave me a personal stake in the narrative. Shit, even Donkey Kong gave you a reason to climb up the scaffolding and rescue generic female princess #1 by showing Donkey Show taking her to the top. Just having the main character talk about how much he loves his family doesn't make me engage. As much as some game developers would like to think this _games are not and will never be like movies_. They are an _interactive medium_ and as such you need to make me, the player, _fucking interact_.

    I think the Wolfenstein games (aside from the first 2, 3D and Spear of Destiny) did a good job of being very cinematic on one hand and being a completely hands free FPS. The New Order especially felt very pulpy.

    I hate red dead redemption becuase it snipped out EVERYTHING good about red dead revolver, the game it is a SEQUAL to, and,, when you use exactly ONE percent of THE GREATEST SHOOTING GAME YOU COULD ASK FOR IN THIS AND LAST DECADE , then , apparently , you still get something palapable. still , doesnt mean that if you played the first one you "still" dont want to KCK IT IN THE FRICKEN BALLS!!!

    I hate it how thechineseroom turned amnesia's basic mechanics around. They wanted the game more story driven that gameplay driven. By doing that, they had to remove things like the sanity meter, monster encounters that actually make you feel squeamish, gameplay in general, & turned AMFP into STORY,STORY,STORY! SCREW AWESOME & SCARY GAMEPLAY, STORY'S THE ONLY THING TO MAKE A GAME!'

    That's what killed it for me, when you take a title like Amnesia and stick it on something else you instantly think it's gonna be like the last but possibly even better, in Machine For Pigs it felt like a Custom story instead of a actual game, or like DLC instead of a full game, basically it's just "Go this way, read page, story, story, story, hide and go around this pig, etc. Basically everything inventory wise/sanity meter is basically gone, since your "Lantern" has infinite oil/candle.

  • @MrSpyPotatoes

    I loved Dark Descent, but this game did not scare me at all. I didn't even realize the first two times I was in a room with pig monsters because they were so easy to get past. The lack of inventory meant no more backtracking, which meant I didn't have to run through an area avoiding a monster, get a puzzle piece/solve a puzzle, and then realize I had to go back. That realization built tension, made me want to stay in that room. But now it's gone. Also, no more limited oil/tinderboxes. Mixed feelings on this, but ultimately it builds tension and contributes to the atmosphere; when you let the lights be unlimited, there's no real reason no to turn everything on, especially if you know there's not a monster around. Also, from a gameplay perspective, it's not as fun because you can only interact with story related objects and a handful of other things; no more furniture barricades like in the previous game. And perhaps most importantly, removing the sanity meter means that there's nothing keeping you from staring at the pig monsters, and the longer you look at anything, the less scary it gets. Do a google search for the amnesia monsters and they look silly, but put yourself in a dark room where looking at them slowly causes your vision to distort and your breathing to become heavier, eventually resulting in the monsters hearing you, is a great way to build tension, and that is unfortunately missing in this game. Really feels like they took a bunch of steps back in this entry.
