    Thank you for posting this video!!! I'll be installing your style of shelf support tomorrow in my Steelwater since I've anchored it this morning. I also be glueing my vertical shelve supports that holds the notched out barrel lean shelf because I'm putting in 1 center shelf to hold a steel slimline sideways file cabinet that I bought on eBay.

    I used 3/4"X3/4" aluminum angle, 3M spray adhesive and gray felt from Michaels hobby store to match my safe. Glue on the felt, lift the shelf in back, slide angle over the clips. Do the same for the front. If you need more strength add aluminum angle or strap across the edge of the shelf with the metal facing up the edge of the board without adding to the thickness of the shelf itself. My shelves are wide and deep so I added more angle pieces in the middle of the shelf between the rails too.

    Great idea to strengthen the particle board shelves. You could also use aluminum tubing, which is lighter weight, and never rusts! Possibly even replace all the shelving with a thick, aluminum (diamond plate) sheet metal. Cover it in carpet, or just rubber trim on the edges, to prevent scratches & cuts!

    I know I’m late to the party, but this is a really good idea, and I just wanted to say kudos. I wouldn’t have thought to use tubing over the shelf brackets. On a different note, though - might not be a bad idea to encourage people not to put ammunition in a safe. That’s an explosion hazard, especially for fire departments if the house burns. Just something I wanted to mention, most instructors now will tell you never to do it. 😃

    Something tells me that putting ammo in an ammo can in a fire proof safe is far safer then leaving it out in the open or in a drawer (reasons should be obvious). Guess it would depend on the quality of the safe, but putting ammo in a fireproof safe is encouraged by many.

    Great idea. So in the demonstration you use the strength of the square tubing as a whole. When you place the metal on the shelf clip you actually are only using the top of the square tubing and not the whole square tube, ie. instead of placing the bottom of the square tube on the shelf clip you place the top of the square tube on the clip. Do you think there will be a difference in strength? I’m sure anything will help.

    My new safe is arriving tomorrow. Outside of safe is 48” wide so I’m guessing the inside is around 42” or so. I want to use 3/4” aluminum square tubing that has 1/8” thick walls. You think the aluminum would be ok or should I use steel? Also will the clip fit inside 3/4” that’s 1/8” thick?

  • @DeanSafe

    @DeanSafe

    When I started in the safe business there were no gun safes but a shocking number of people would buy fire safes and then put gun racks in them and their guns would corrode like crazy. Not an Issue with modern gun safes. Drywall is a pain to install, but done correctly it works great. Great question and thank you for watching, John

  • @DeanSafe

    @DeanSafe

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Craig Cupo Depends, you either have really bad clips or just too much weight for the shelf. I’ve see some crummy clips in new safes so take one of the clips th a hardware store and compare yours to the ones they have (KV brand is the benchmark). If you think the shelf side standards can take the weight the two crossbars will still help a lot. Thanks for watching, John

    What I did in my safe to prevent issues in the future even though I did not have the partial board. I went to the hardware store and got some pine 1 by, and metal strips that were 1/8 by 1 ½ wide. I cut the metal strips the length of shelves and screwed every 4 inches placed those where the shelves sit on the clips did this for all the shelves. With this, I am still able to use pistol holders, and you cannot see the support. For the side I have ammo storage on I cut the one by pine length the shelves are spaced 9 inches for me, wrapped in a carpet to match safe attached in on sides 2 per shelf. I also reinforced the center divider with a painted metal strip to keep any bowing from ever happening. No issues load tested for few days 150 pounds on every shelf.

  • @robertdevore3350
    @robertdevore33504 жыл бұрын

    First of all...the shelves are particle board, which is the crappiest of crap to begin with. Instead of using metal and all that. Simply replace your shelves with actual plywood with facing.

    I've got a 4k dollar liberty... That's not a "cheap" safe... It still sagged under the weight of my handguns. Damn glued together sawdust for a shelf... In a gun safe, should get someone at liberty (and the rest of them) fired. I went to Lowes and had some boards cut, covered then with a very close matching carpet, and used the trim off the old shelves... For less than 50 bucks I fixed a problem that liberty couldn't.
