I'm really impressed how they developed the character. At first I thought she was going to be one of those one-note mean girls but she really isn't. The gradual change felt natural and not really rushed.

Yeah definitely, the first half of the "I'm a teenage abomination" episode where we first met her, she felt like a stereotypical mean girl. But once we got to see her character flaws and motivations, she began to feel more realistic, and thus her gradual change felt realistic. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Well, I understand why it was rushed (due to lack of time by Disney - thanks guys 🙄) but I still feel like Amity's character arc went too fast; I mentioned this in my own comment, that in my opinion, she should have at least accepted Luz by the end of season 1, then became her friend with hints of romance in season 2, and finally became a romantic interest in season 3. The backbone of their relationship is very cute, but yes, I do think they could have paced it better. This is my personal opinion, and it is neither right nor wrong, so please don't go ahead and tell me immature shit like "shut up" or "don't watch the show then", because I am allowed to voice my opinions :)

Her evolution is absolutely beautiful and heartwarming to see. we get to know her as the perfect, top student who does everything to maintain her status and gets mad once someone is better than her. Her parents likely put a ton of pressure onto her, forcing friends onto her and chose a path for her. Despite all of this, she never felt like she belonged anywhere, she felt lonely and like that she couldn't show anyone her true face. But when she met Luz... everything changed for her. Luz wanted to be her friend and be with her, to get to know her even thou she was mean to her at first - Luz liked her for who she was, not how everyone else saw her or wanted to see her; but instead she got accepted as the sweet hearted and kind person she truly is. In return, this made her a happier person, who finally chose her own path

This is why it irritates me when people say Amity and Luz’s relationship is rushed. In each episode (except the first cause that’s more about defining Amity’s starting point) there is noticeable and traceable growth. It’s not like the developments between Luz and Amity are coming out of nowhere. People need to stop considering “they’re not going to get together until the last episode” slow burn as the absolute default standard (no matter how fun it is).

Yeah, exactly. To compare it to a very similar character with a similar arc, Pacifica from Gravity Falls' redemption arc really only took place in 1 episode (2 if you count The Golf War), and her development was kinda disregarded in the finale (Lost Legends did acknowledge it though which is nice). I liked her arc a lot regardless, but you could reasonably call it rushed. Compared to that, Amity was in half this season's episodes and her coming out of her shell and acting nicer progressed gradually episode by episode. In addition, each piece of her arc was permenant, and she is currently a totally different person now than she was at the start of S1. Don't see how people can say it's rushed, it was very gradual and natural.

It's somewhat understandable that Amity would want answers, since it knocked Amity out of the top spot. As for Amity being mean to Willow, it was essentially an act forced on her by her parents. Amity is evidently the victim of emotional abuse, but can you blame her for not standing up to her parents as a little kid?

@@demondayz1628 I think a lot of people missed the importance of that. Amity always had to work to earn her parents affection, so she thought she had to prove herself to Luz. But Luz already thought she was an awesome girlfriend. Luz loves her in a way she's never been loved before.

The fact that, even out of so many things she could be afraid of, like her parents disowning her because she’s lesbian if she ever comes out or tells them she has a crush on Luz, Amity’s greatest fear is getting rejected by the only person who truly cares about her. Who truly matters to Amity.

I would say, the fact that Groms figure was ambiguous unlike Luz's who was clearly her mother, it meant that her fear of rejection ran deeper than just Luz Ie, fear of being rejected by Emporers coven, fear of being rejected by her parents for her feelings towards Luz, or if she doesn't do well at school, or if she doesn't get into the Emporers Coven etc But, Grom ripped her note because that's the biggest part of the rejection fear, that Luz would reject her, which kinda agrees with your point because out of all tne different rejections, her biggest fear of one at that point was with Luz

I feel like the whole season was amity's development towards Luz. I will wish that she'll stand up to her parents

@Gravity Luz's magic doesn't work on Earth, and the whole point of staying in the Boiling Isles was so she could be a witch, so if the two worlds merged together, she probably would lose her magical ability or it wouldn't work when she drew the glyphs so she'd have to find a new way to do magic.

She wasn’t mean intentionally at the start. She was trying to help willow in the first scene, but was really, really, really damn bad at it. The arc was never from bully to bestie, it was from unintentional asshole to bestie who knows how to not be an asshole.

Agree with you! I think at least one episode between lost in language and adventures in the elements (5 episodes) about the two, would have made everything better. My legit favorite part of the whole Lumity plot is precisely when Luz says "What are friends for?" Amity didn't get sad, she smiled. She knew that Luz would most likely NEVER reciprocate her feelings, and she's content with that. If Luz is in her life, she's happy, whether as friends or lovers. It's bittersweet, and I love it.

the fact that Amity’s worst fear is getting rejected by Luz shows how much she actually likes her. In my theory she started developing feelings for Luz a bit later but still liked her as a person even before that. Probably to keep her reputation up, she didn’t want to hang out with Luz in the first place. I hope she confesses in season 2 though. Also, she’s so in love that when Luz asked for help she couldn’t even decline and accepted right away, even not knowing how dangerous Luz’s request could have been. Believe me, as someone who had crushes, this is EXACTLY how you act.

she wasn’t mean intentionally at the start. She was trying to help willow in the first scene, but was really, really, really damn bad at it. The arc was never from bully to bestie, it was from unintentional asshole to bestie who knows how to not be an asshole.

She really went from "she is NOT my friend" to "stay away from MY Luz"

the grom fight/ dance has to be one of the best animations i have ever seen. It just goes so smooth

Amity has the biggest gay panic ever and it reminds me of myself in 6th grade. Lesbian and afraid.

Its so hard to see Amity go from “Ugh it’s you” to “Luz’s awesome girlfriend”

Amity's "Gay Panic Mode" is just too adorable and I hope that the net season gives us a lot more moments with it. She's become so precious!

It feels so strange going back and seeing an aggressive amity when we've gotten so used to gay panic amity

I like how throughout the show she's never really been mean spirited, she always interacted with Luz incredibly genuinely. Even when she was aggressive towards Luz it was for good reasons and when they turned out to be false she was very quick to accept that and open up to Luz. How is she so pure?

When you see 3 other characters with the main in the title card, and already know they'll be important even if one of them is mean at first. Then you know you're going to enjoy this show, right off the gate it's twisting into something good.

This video made me realize Amity just heard Luz say the name of her favorite book series and may have gotten a little bit too excited about the reference to Azura's witches duel

It still amazes me how she went from "I WANT MY BADGE!" and "SAY IT, SAY YOUR NOT A WITCH!" to "*oh, wow. s p o r t s*"

12:17 I ADORE this scene. It took all I could not to cheer at the top of my lungs when I first saw this. I'm so proud of my girl Amity, she grew so much in such a short time, it was so satisfying to see her choose her real friends over those mean bitties. Anyone can change and be a better person if they try.

Ep 5 is basically "dumb teenager makes bad life choices, more at 10"

I find this evolution so impressive because 1. It’s such a large change in one season 2. It feels natural 3. It doesn’t feel rushed Most shows wouldn’t be able to do an evolution like that, but then again this show isn’t by any means most shows

Imagine how different the series would be if Luz grabbed the other half of the note

And after those episodes came the "STAY AWAY FROM MY LUZ!!!" moment which was AWESOME and was the moment where Luz actually started being attracted to Amity
