FYI.... he is basically the local leader, if they didn't want to be Amish they don't have to be, but cutting some beards is physically pretty benign and it's complete nonsense that he had to serve years of prison for that. It's effectively the same as putting the major in prison for handing out parking tickets...

Assault and battery is not in keeping with Amish pacificist values. These idiots did wrong But to send them to PRI on is a stretch....They should have been given fines and public service. They acted like gangsters but they are not really gangsters and of no danger to the general public. The ones abused should get the fines paid by the abusers and be consulted as to the appropriate communiity service. And maybe the abusers need to see the barber too. That would serve them right.

The first attack happened in Sept, 2011. This was reported internally. After multiple attacks police were notified as the Bishops felt they could not handle the situation and were afraid others would be targeted. Even after the police were notified and investigations followed, the Bergholz Clan (lead by Mullet) continued the attacks. That is when the FBI was called and the hate crime was attached. The cutting of an Amish man's beard, or a married woman's hair, is against their scriptures. It basically cheapens them in the eyes of God and their communities. That is why it was considered a hate crime. Sixteen men and women held down these people and violently hacked off the most distinguishing outward characteristic of their faith. In total there were 5 attacks spanning a month. For the victims to step forward was incredibly brave and opened themselves up to further ridicule from the Amish community, as generally issues are handled internally. That alone shows how devastating this crime was to them. Just because the number of people affected by this group was small does not mean that they do not deserve justice. Those arrested were thugs and yes, they deserve prison.

And when people found out about it good people, tried to do something about it they were punished.

If you want to get the details of what's really happened with this, mullet's daughter who was also jailed, she was a victim of mullet her father, she's interviewed by Eli Yoder on Eli Yoder's KZread channel. Mullet is horrible, he would tell the women in his religious community that if they wanted to be closer to God that he needed to sleep with him, some of these were married women. He's currently married to his niece. He would put his wife in the chicken coop. He basically dumped his wife for his niece, I'll let you hear it from his daughter on Eli's channel. So much more to it than this. Mullet was released from his prison sentence early much too early, after covid. Because of covid.
