Any sane person who has used the Amiga and then has had to use lesser computers will never again be quite satisfied. Performance is only part of it, the major factor is the smoothness of the Amiga experience.

Mine too. I was very young. I think it was an A500, but my memory is sketchy that far back. It wasn't new, my dad got it in a trade for something. It just booted floppy's. I mostly remember Bomber Man, Lemmings and Cool Coyote: Fire and Ice! Next PC was a PIII 800Mhz and Windows 98. What a buggy mess 98 was, wished I had experienced the Amiga OS. Still fond of Win 98 though

Got MorphOS running on on a G5 sitting under my desk. Really impressed with how zippy it is. Just kinda a shame though. I boot it up, play around a bit, and then it's kinda like "OK, well, time to go back to something I can get real work done on", then I boot up this Arch box I'm commenting off.

Still kinda sad how it all turned out. I saved up for over a year as I wanted a Amiga 1000 as a child, but I did end up getting an Amiga 500 as a massive upgrade over my C64. But then decades later in the Army I did some time in a sim centor and they had issues with the computer running it all. Well low and behold running 7 terminals, and a main map screen in high rez is a single A1000. MY practice with the Amiga saved the day. My PC at the time was a Pentium 90 and was great for games but as a terminal server it was lacking and even the 2d card of the day or early 3d accelerators were incapable of multi display and terminal users. It really was a multi tasking master.

This is a period of time where I know very little what happened to the Amiga, from around 1997 until my Amiga 1200 died in 2000 I was almost exclusively using it as a Macintosh via emulation (my 040 card made it into a very capable Quadra speed Macintosh, still useful back then for using MS Office 4, PageMaker and Photoshop), and then between 2000 and 2018 I didn't have anything to do with the Amiga scene. Interesting to see what happened!

I bought an X5000 motherboard and 4.1, after becoming bored w/x86 and re-discovered Amiga. Then I stumbled upon MorphOS. Both are really cool. I have an X1950XTX for MorphOS and an RX590 for 4.1 on the x5000. Viva Amiga. Oh I also bought a Vampire V4, and fell in love w/the big box classics and built a 4000, AA3000+, and 4000TX! Amazing what is avaliable today with this resurgence of the scene.

I used A500, A1200, turbo cards, 68030, 68040, 68060 and also PPC + 68060....and finally I got Pegasus board with Morphos (was porting some DTP app to Amiga). And feelings were mixed. On one hand everything was working really fast. Moving windows, multitasking. HDD was working faster than SSD this days (or at least I had that impression). Desktop and icons looked stunning. But on other hand there was a lack of many important things. Drivers for many peripherals were missing. Before buying any peace of HW you had to check is it supported or not. And with every update I was hoping of some really needed new SW, drivers but I was getting instead new icon packs, new desktop images and similar. I loved Amiga very much, but IMHO it should be left to rest in peace. It can't compete with todays PCs and Macs. Playing just 720p videos and having browser with glitches when you scroll simple page is just...so outdated.

The pegasus ide controller struggles to do 30 Megabytes,.... it's about 1.5% as fast as something modern :-)

If you wanted a re-emergence of software for the Amiga they'd do well to port Electron, despite it going against the liteweight resource philosophy of the OS. OWB could easily be used as the basis of an Electron-like container, but the developer (it seemed to me at least) pretended not to know what I was talking about.

To think its been iterating none stop since the Amiga days. Its no wonder its so slick under Windows. The sad thing is despite how great it is. You will almost never see it featured on websites or in videos covering software. Its almost like a hidden secret that mostly only the Amiga users from way back know about it because they used it back then as THE Amiga file manager of choice.

The nice thing about Amiga back in the day is that it did things that no other computer could do, it took competitors a decade or longer to really catch up. Now Amiga is just nostalgia, unless someone is going to innovate some beyond nextgen computer and gaming scifi level type of system and name it Amiga there is really no future for Amiga. Preemptive multitasking was impressive in 1984, nowadays its nothing special every OS has it.

I was a very avid Amiga user, but in hindsight the issue was that the Amiga was designed as a game console, so there was no easy way to to modernize the architecture of the machine without a huge rewrite of AmigaOS, likely obsoleting every existing piece of software. Since Commodore was on the verge of insolvency almost continuously, they couldn't afford anything but a repackaging of the existing hardware and some minor graphics tweaks that made their way into the A4000. Those were good times though.

Ahh, such a sad story. Thank you for this video. I remember well the OS4 vs MorphOS debacle. Of course I've never actually tried either because I never had the requisite hardware to run these OS's... ...one might say that with hindsight the whole PPC thing was a massive miss-step and was the final nail in AmigaOS's coffin as anything other than a retro hobby. My remaining interest is in classic systems only I'm sad to say. I'm happy for the people who get something out of the PPC-based OS's and wish every success to those still mad enough to develop and sell PPC hardware... Remember Amithlon? That was the real future of AmigaOS, no hind sight needed at all. I remember well being one of the people championing Amithlon as the future of the OS but sadly Amithlon got buried as a result of 'political pressure' and in the process the wonderful developer, Bernie Meyer, got thoroughly screwed. Why Amithlon? Well, the opportunity has long since passed but in Amithlon Amiga inc (remember that bunch of useless...) had a custom Linux kernel to act as hardware abstraction layer between OS 3.1 and cheap+powerful x86 hardware. You ended up with a dirt cheap and super-fast Draco that could run all 68k software courtesy of fast 68k emulation as well as AmigaOS software targeted to the built in, functionally identical, x86 API. The 'lack' of a classic chip set was not a problem as there was more than enough power to emulate the 'missing bits'. Indeed, such was the power of the system running on x86 hardware you also had full WarpOS support running faster with software rendering with an emulated 68k CPU than any 'native' hardware if you didn't have the luxury of a supported PCI GFX card to do hardware rendering. I think bench-marking my 2.2Ghz Athlon-based Amithlon machine gave me something like a 400MHz 68040 and software rendering QuakeGL 68k at about 120fps. The fact that the AmigaOS API also existed in native x86 under Amithlon meant drivers, OS components, and software could be migrated piecemeal giving users a painless migration path to modern hardware options while reducing development headaches for whatever cash-strapped company was nominally in charge. IMO this was the OS's last shot at being relevant outside retro hobby circles. Of course the idiots 'running' Amiga inc killed off Amithlon. Partly through incompetence, but largely as a result of pressure from Hyperion (among others) who could see their investment in OS4 being wasted - very short sighted! Yes, there's AROS which, like MorphOS, is excellent but development took too long for it to have any real impact even if that ship hadn't already sailed with the end of Amithlon. Hmm, I've actually not fired up any of my classic Amigas (or Amithlon) in a couple of years... I think I might go take a stroll down memory lane. I look forward to your next episode.

The music software there's 2 I seem to think but I never could find it but let in was on the Spectrums which had to but Amiga that name was the first.

Great times when men were men and knew how to fight the good fight with hardware and software setup. Great memories but I can't imagine why anyone would buy into this next generation Amiga.. PC hardware with Windows or Linux offers so much more and for fun projects use a Raspberry or other SBC..

Mostly, it's all about games. Even though a whole new amiga (e.g. powerPC or coldfire or dual-CPU 680x0) could have been made, if Escom were trying to be as budget as possible by selling the a1200, they could have done a good job of it with a few tweaks, and amigans would have bought the machine had it been named the cd1200 or a12cd. The a1200 would have needed 2meg FastRAM on the MBoard, (thereby giving 4meg when added to the ChipRAM, and it is a minimal change to the hardware design compared to more ChipRAM even though it would have been nice). At the time people moaned how the a1200 should have had at least a 68030, however maybe they are wrong and the existing 68020 would have done, had it been overclocked to a stable 28MHz (since, with fastRAM it will run like a 68030 of 24MHz which is an a3000 basically). An FPU should have been added too, and it'd just require the pull-up resistor/capacitor arrangement. Also, putting on the akiko would be worthwhile and allow a cheap way to help a CDROM drive (and c2p with FPU pre-calculation in future games). With that in mind, instead of bothering with the coding of the new workbench, a better kickstart and a "game bundle deal" to include a CDROM version of an existing game (like Gloom or AlienBreed3D or whatever) but with an expansion pack on the same CDROM (optimised for FPU pre-calc) would have been a wiser usage of software development resources. Lastly, the parallel port could have been upgraded so as to allow either a CDROM or HardDrive to be plugged in (depending on whether a laptop CDROM was to go in the IDE, or whether a HDD would go there, thusly vice versa). The kickstart would allow parallel-port booting. The akiko might have helped the CDROM a bit. Then, of course, flinging in a CDROM drive, as either a laptop slim one internally (for the IDE) or a parallel port one. The changing of the parallel port to allow all this would be the bigger challenge with the 68020, and even the 68030 had its own serial. It would have been worth it though. An rj45 ethernet would have been wise. Bundling the cd32 joypad in it but adding an extra gravis-compatible analogue thumbstick on it would have been good for games. All of this doesn't take that much development. Not a big undertaking. Don't even need to change the sound. Nobody truly cared about the "low quality" sound. The sound was cool anyway. Also a CDROM (even the a570) could use a AudioCD "passthrough" for music. The Escom company had CDROM drives. All of this would have left the trapdoor expansion untouched and so an upgrade for the FMV cartridge and a PowerPC (or coldfire) all-in-one-addon could have been released later as an official product if they really felt they wanted to, but by then mpeg2 could have been added on it for "FMV" with a PCI breakout cable to add a HBA for a DVD (which runs at 10x CDROM, exceeding the parallel port's 6xCDROM speed which it would not have run so fast anyway). Also RAM would be cheaper by then, and graphics could have been included (such as the Hombre but with a 32bit blitter), and a TV-capture-Card to continue the video-toaster strengths, and upgrading the soundcard. Release a new OS with that "all-in-one" tradoor expansion if needed (and leave a RAM slot on it for SIMM or even SDRAM if released late enough). A dual-CPU architecture would have made sense one day, upon success of the 28MHz 68020 adaptations already said.

@@Djformula The a12cd "mod" above could have been done by escom because it can be done today even by a semi-professional (or good amateur) modder or system customiser. Not a big undertaking. Even a double kickstart ROM switcher with a blank ROM bay could have allowed time for the kickstart to be rewritten and delivered to registered users by post while cdboot floppy is used meantime, and while workaround floppy kickstarts could have been released on magazines. Or they could just write the rom from the start. A cd32 ROM can be loaded onto an a1200 to run the microcosm ISO using a modern accelertor. The MJnurney channel is currently looking at booting a real CDROM that way on the a1200.

Commodore killed the Amiga by not upgrading from ECS to something with a faster CPU Mhz and something more than AGA, it was quickly suffocated by the games such as Doom, Day of The Tentacle, X-Wing and plenty of other games on the PC. The majority of people either sold up to get a PC, or just added a PC. Imagine if a faster CPU and something with more colours than a PC had come out? But CBM just wanted to release small expensive and pointless upgraded Amiga's than invest during 1990-1992. By the way, 3DFX cards are around 1998, not 1992 when the A1200 was released, 1996 was the first dedicated 3D card I purchased and it was a Creative Labs 3D Blaster PCI with the Rendition Verite Chipset.
