Amiga Longplay The Faery Tale Adventure

Ойындар

www.recordedamigagames.org
Played by: Ironclaw
This game has many more places to explore and more quests to do, but enough is enough.
Whenever the character is twitching (while moving) it's because he's starving.
The game has a nice ingame map system which you can call forth when you need to know where you are in the game by usnig a Bird Totem. For some reason it didn't work properly for me. All that happened was I got the white cross in the middle of the screen, but no map. Maybe it was caused by some bad settings in the emulator or a broken version of the game, donno.
At around 13:19 I removed the "Cycle-exact" (emulator setting) to speed up the game a bit, especially the fights.
In Hemsath's Tomb I was a few Gold Keys short to open all the gold doors, so I used the door bug instead of exiting the tomb and killing monsters till I had the missing keys. Was just a time saver, not really a cheat imo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stats info:
Brv = Bravery: The more you have, the harder you are to hit I think, also when you get bravery points you now and then get Vit (vitality) points aswell, which is your health.
Lck = Luck: Your lives. Whenever you die you lose 5 Luck. When you are down to zero you will continue playing as one of the other brothers (as seen in the intro). Didn't pay attention when I tried to see what happened when I lost all luck, so either everything resets and you get to play with another character, or you keep what you've done so far (stats, items....) + play with another character. In Hemsath's Tomb you only lose 3 luck or something when dying.
Knd = Kind: Donno what good this one is for, but you can increase it by giving gold to people, especially beggars.
Wlth = Wealth: Your gold. -

What's amazing is it was basically a launch product for the Amiga. David Joiner did all the coding, gfx and sound in like 7 months, and the code was full of cool hacks, like for the smooth map scrolling he basically used the floppy disk controller chip as a second processor to load the maps in the background. An incredibly ambitious single man achievement. It came out so early that a lot of later Amiga users didn't even know it existed.

This game is one of my personal favourites. I was 17 years old when it was released. At that time in the late 1980ies I spent more time drawing maps than playing the game. ;-) One useful thing at the very beginning of the game is to head south-east along the path starting east of Tambry. After some walking you reach an old graveyard. Enter it in the north-east. Stay in the graveyard and wait for enemies to arrive. In most cases they come from the outside of the graveyard and you can kill them through the fence without taking any personal damage. You can even plunder them through the fence. Sometimes it will take some time until the enemies start their attacks. Increase your BRV to 100 and then you may start the quest without getting in too much trouble.

Even better, there's a jade skull hidden in one of the fireplaces in Tambry. Using it you can nuke the first group of guys with a sword and a bow. There's also a stone circle north-east-east of Tambry which has some nice loot buried in it.

This... is... amazing!! I was playing this as a 3 - 4 year old and it's the earliest game I ever remember playing. I have searched a number of times over the years to find it and never did. Stumbling across it tonight by accident and seeing that I spelled the name wrong when I have looked for it in the past. I have just turned 32 and I am amazed, I have not seen this since. All I remembered of it was that I was in love with the game, fighting skeletons and riding a turtle. Blown away!

This game was my very first RPG. Phillip was my favorite brother, even though I was a firstborn. I remembered the battle theme even 20+ years since playing it as a kid, when that music was playing it was freaking GO TIME. Oddly enough, it didn't bother me at all that there was no tutorial or help system in this game - I just explored and explored. When I saw the ghosts for the first time, my dad called them "Nazgul" (he was a Tolkien nut...so am I now); to this day they freak the eff out of me. I'll never forget wandering into the woods where the Witch lives, or trying desperately to retrace my steps and find my fallen brother's corpses. Oh, it kills me that I've never beaten this game. I need to find a way to play it so that I can remedy that.

I played the Sega Genesis version. My little cousin and younger brother would always rent games to play. They couldn't get passed the games, so they would ask me to play for them. I would always say I was too busy to play at first, but soon I would play for them. I would get passed these games, like Faery Tale, and they would become my favorite games ever. Good memories and a very classic amazing game to play. Faery Tale, King's Bounty, and Starflight are my 3 favorites of all time.

I loved my Amiga and I loved this game. I remember walking into the small computer store in Toronto and buying this game. It had a thin, folding book-like packaging and I seem to remember that the games coder was, for some reason, shown dressed in some bizarre fantasy sword fighting costume on the packaging. I don't know why that stuck with me, probably it scared me or something.

I bought this game along with my Amiga 1000 in 1987. Played it for many hours each night but never could get very far. I loved the music so much that I let the game run without playing just to listen to the wonderful tunes. Even though it was hard to finish, I very much enjoyed the time spent playing this game. Thanks to the Internet's maps and walk-throughs, 21 years later in 2008 I finally was able to go back and finish the game using WinUAE Amiga emulator running on my Dell laptop.

Loved this game. It was the first RPG I had on my dad's PC. It even had the same glitch letting you summon the turtle in the lava, which was how I completed the game the first time around. I still have fond memories exploring the lake north of the village, the epic journey through the witch's forest, wondering if there was a way to kill the dragon, finding the golden beast, getting ambushed by a horde of ghosts at Vermillion Manor, finding the hidden city and the quirky astral plane-ish ending area. The graphics were great for its time, although the characters looked very silly moving south. :)

I just completed the Genesis version and its a pretty much a perfect port from the Amiga, you can get a genesis copy for around 10-12 bucks. an excellent landmark for open world rpgs of the early 90's. It's almost impossible to explore all 17,000+ screens this game has to offer. Was the largest open world rpg for 5 years 1986-1991.

I only played the Mega Drive version. Sure, it gives up the stereo sound (no idea why, as it should've been superior with the extra channels and without the panning limitations of the Amiga, but all early EA games were in mono) but aside of the redesigned GUI (the Amiga GUI is in high-res as well, the rest of the screen isn't), it's very faithful. It even keeps the pauses when an enemy is nearby. The only missing content appears to be the grunts during fighting, and the sound effect quality has taken a bit of a dive.

I did figure out a nice exploit to save the game, use a mapping totem, then reload so I wouldn't run out of them. Also took me a while to figure out to use the lassoo on the golden swan. I thought I had to hit it with a weapon to make it move. Before I ever won, the game disk got corrupted and... that created a new game with all the game tiles mixed around & garbled, was a cool glitch.

Played this on the amiga back in 1988 when i was 18. Spent 100+ hours on this then, only to be bettered by the elder scrolls oblivion on the playstation with 100's of hours game play. It took the game maker of this game 2 years to make by david joiner which was quite an achievement back then on the 16 bit computer.

I have been trying to find this ganes name for a very long time. I clearly remembered parts of it. The forest, the swan, the UI, the music.. but i just couldn't remember the name. I'm so glad i finally found it! Now I can continue living my life and move on after it all came grinding to a halt 15 years ago due to this. I'm 40 now.

I loved this game as a kid. Had no idea there was an actual story or objective. I'd just keep playing till a brother died, then take the next and wander around again until that guy died

As well as a paper map, it also had a game function ("Bird Totem") where you could see a large and detailed area around you. I don't think the guy playing this game (above) actually uses Bird Totems because he's so familiar with the layout. When he's going through the maze to the witch's castle, he obviously has done it so many times that he knows exactly where to go. I almost got to that point myself (back in the day). Obviously, there was no random generation at this point in gaming history!

I like how you go to all the trouble of rescuing the princess and the king still won't go to the trouble to have someone unlock the door for you to get out.

Loved this game so much in it's day. Many years later, I had the feeling that in "Diablo II - Act 2" there was a reminiscence of "Fairy Tale Adventures" last dungeon: A labyrinth in Space with an endboss.

I remember buying this game for £50! Such a great game. There was a cheat where you summon the sea Tuttle and you can attack it without hurting it but earn bravery. Makes you practically invincible.

Yup but was nothing I wanted to do as I don't use exploits/cheats in my longplays (only some save-states, which is allowed).

  • @iamironclaw

Well, I wrote this in the video description: Brv = Bravery: The more you have, the harder you are to hit I think, also when you get bravery points you now and then get Vit (vitality) points aswell, which is your health.

I only heard of this game yesterday… shows how a lot of the achievements of microcomputers are being forgotten and buried underneath their brethren on consoles, handhelds, and arcades… and that’s a shame.

yeah this and ultima 7, which came later, but i think both for different reasons, can be considered the true ancestors of open-world rpg's. this one's a little rough around the edges replayed today, but ultima 7 holds up as well as it did the day it was released. both are major influences on my childhood. fairytale in particular was years and 1000's of hours of my early years on the amiga 1000.

What was that glitch Ironclaw used at 2:35:45? Did it really make all the doors to the statue in the Tombs of Hemsath open of their own accord? If it does, it's a pretty insane glitch...
