Thanks a ton! I have three Amiga 500s in my parents basement, that I got for free many years ago. I'm on a nostalgia trip right now, and I'm planning on putting together at least one working machine, just like the one I had in the early 90's. I don't know much about them just yeat, but I tested them by powering them up and just one of them gave the green light and the disk drive echoed that lovely clicking sound. As of now I don't have any peripherals for them, only the three machines, one power supply and one external floppy drive. The one that seemed to work is made in West Germany, the other two that didn't are made in Hong Kong. I don't know about their differences, but your video is a great help in identifying them. I think I'll have to at least get a monitor, a mouse and some disks to do some more tests. For a joystick a TAC-2 would be ace, since even back in the day it seemed to be the best joystick to have. I felt that the Quickshots were just crappy..

My A500+ had two holes at the back, 1MB chip switch + Kickstart 1.3 and 2.0 switch. I also had holes on the back of my A590 too. A 4 position switch to select how much RAM it had and a switch to turn the hard drive power on or off. This was so that I could reduce the amount of RAM in the system when I was using the Action Replay, so it didn't take so long to scan the memory. It was also nice to be able to completely disable the hard drive from booting up with the other switch. In fact, there was also a slit along the back because I rehoused the hard disk into an external casing under the desk on a long ribbon cable. This was to cut down the noise it made, which also meant I could unplug that piddly little fan that was even noisier than the drive as there wasn't the heat being generated. If you find an A500+ or an A590 with white plastic glued on the inside of the casing to cover the holes... it was probably mine :-D

What would be the best way to start the troubleshooting? Previous owner says it started a few years ago, could it be corrosion on any of the chips, or can they actually go bad just by age?

On my Rev.5 Amiga motherboards I have done a small mod to make the power LED dim like 6A and 8A, instead of turning off like shown in the video here. It will dim (turn off on older boards) when the audio filter is disabled. The mod is very simpe. Just ADD a 100-ohm resistor between emitter and collector of Q502. In my case I used two of the soldering points of the keyboard connector on the underside of the board. I measured the two soldering points that was connected directly to emitter and collector of Q502 and just soldered on a 100-ohm resistor. Now my Rev.5 boards will dim the power LED when audio filter is disabled, just like newer revision boards. I hated the fact that it would turn completely off.

Rev5 is not a bad machine as such, IF the goal is to play them old games from floppy or gotek. That said. Rev5 have this little bug, that sometimes makes it boot wrong. That can be fixed by adding a circuit with some resistors between the kickrom and the kickrom socket. Yet with an rev5 machine, and 512k expansion, and a scandoubler. Then you have the perfect and cheapest way of playing over half of all Amiga games ever created. Just make sure you get a kick switcher too, and install kick 1.2 and 1.3 in the machine. That way, you can play pre-1988 games as well, without any issue at all.

Today a lot of people just use their Amiga's to play games with WHDload and only need kickstart 3.1, but back in the day when the Amiga was current, if people wanted to run their older games as well as take advantage of the later games/software a kickstart switcher was essential. I bought one for my Amiga 600 back in the 90's cause a lot of the old games and demo's i use to watch did not work with kickstart 2.0. I had kickstart 1.3 and 2.0 on the switcher. I ended up only keeping the Amiga 600 which i bought brand new for only 6 months and bought another Amiga 500, because at the time the A600 was crap compared to an A500 which had many expansions available.

No use for a kickstart swapper these days. These days people are doing a lot worse. I see so many Amiga cases on Facebook pages that are hacked so a Gotek can fit where the original floppy use to go. Even worse is some people are hacking their Amiga cases even worse just to get an LCD screen fitted on the top so they can see what is running on the Gotek. That is one thing i will never do.

Nobody seems to remember that the issues when kickstart 1.3 came, was just as big, as when the Amiga 500+ and Amiga600 came. Games from between 1985 and 1988, sometimes require kickstart 1.2 in order to run issue free. And there are even an article in a 1991 Danish Amiga magazine, talking about that people had forgotten all these compatibility issues that came when 1.3 was introduced. There are many reasons for wanting to change ROMS and the most important reason is to run the older software that was not so compatible with I believe 2.x. Most use 3.x ROMS and have no need for other ROMS's. Having a ROM Switch would allow you to run the ROM you like and install DIAG ROM without having to open your case. If you have the toys to burn ROMs then its a very viable option. The ROMULATOR allows you to install ROM's on an SD Card which is cool. Most accelorators will allow to run a maprom to load in different ROM or you can do a rekick to load a ROM file. Anyway we all have different needs and not everyone needs nor requires the ability to run different ROMs but the options are there should you need to. Oh man my A500 the other night went poof when I turned it on. No lights, no video sync but the very noticeable scent that something burned. I never had my nose so close to a motherboard trying to isolate that electrical burn smell. I was smelling everything the PSU is ok no bad smells but the A500 I can smell it everywhere but the disk drive has the stronger scent and the smell is stronger on the drive side as well. Usually you can spot a burn but like Sgt Shultz I saw nothing but that's just a preliminary visual inspection on the top size of the board. I will know more once I run the board under my microscope. Anyway looks like another Amiga Repair and that's just part of the retro experience although most would be crying about, me its about keeping the dream alive and the A500 is old like all my other Amiga's. The only bummer is that I had an Indivision, ROMULATOR and Memory Expansion so I am not sure how far south my A500 went but I will find out by the end of the month.

@@RETROCENGO Damn I wrote a detailed response on what I went through with the A500 which is now fully functional. I had the motherboard on my bench all day mostly inspecting everything under the microscope finding no signs of a burn. Only thing I could find was what appears to be a broken trace that appears to have been drilled its a perfect hole. This trace run between the edge connector P50 to Pin 20 of the 68000 and to Pins 25 on U7 & U8 of the CIA's but my board has a 68K resistor between the 68000 and U7 which appears to complete the circuit and its installed on some A500's to resolve one EMI issues but not all A500's but its listed as XR1. I spent the day doing way too much in-circuit testing not finding anything. The board was recently recapped by the previous owner, his work was done well but he chose to use HITANO caps and so I am not familiar with those but from what I have read the quality is questionable by some while others swear by them but for now I will just leave them alone. Not finding anything wrong I decided to just electrify the bastard, keep in mind I had already removed the Indivision Board, ROMULATOR and RAM Expander. I figured it something was going to burn let it burn then I would know what I had to deal with. Yup I turned it on and she booted no issues. I started installing the components in one at a time and no issues found. Yea its working and I should be happy but I did smell a burn last week. The only thing I could think of is when I installed the ROMULATOR I had to raise it up with another socket because Capacitor C816 was commming in contact with the SD Card preventing me from fully seating the ROMULATOR. The added height meant the set of Jumpers on the end of the ROMULATOR for selecting which revision motherboard its installed in came in contact with the keyboard. Even though I was not using these jumpers I did leave the jumper connected off to the side but unknown to me it fell off when I installed the top cover which may have pushed the keyboard close to the jumpers on the ROMULATOR but there was no arching marks on the bottom side of the keyboard. So just to make sure I insulated the bottom of the keyboard because I did not want to risk a short even though there is space between the ROMULATOR and keyboard its not worth taking chances. Anyway I spent way to much time on this issue and then several hours more loading different ROMS and bootinng and rebooting with disks just to make sure this puppy is good to go. I will expand and accelerate this puppy so that it will fly and it occupies a space on my server desk and I did install an external GOTEK Drive you know those are hit or miss and the two I never use because they are hit or miss well one is kinda sorta working but its good enough to boot from. Now if I can find my special edge connector I can possibly get a HD Setup with 8MB or additional RAM but I will be damned if I know what I did with that edge connector but it can be used on the A1000 or A500 but it allows me to install a Zorro Board. Its funnly because for over 10 years it sat on my counter then I found a new home for it but this old fart forgot where that new home is. So I will rip my house apart this weekend until I find it.

@@RETROCENGO There is a new board out, Amiga 520 Classic that can be used on the A1000 and A500 that allows you to run at I believe its 28 mhz but it provides an IDE you can boot from. I do want a Vampire for the A500 but the wait is long. The Vampire will just ignore the ROM so the ROMULATOR will not be usable. What I like about the ROMULATOR is I can easily switch between ROMS including running DIAGROM and since its not accelerated it comes in handy. As you know with an accelerator you can do a MAPROM and do the same thing. I hate disks with a passion because they are so unreliable which is how I got back into the retro scene because I wanted to protect my disk collection and get everything stored on my server so I could access it and move the what I want to use. One thing lead to another now I have a house full of C64, 64C, 128, 128DCR, Amigas and emulators be it WINUAE, Pi, Mist and shhhh I got some PPC Mac's to play with Morph OS but you only get 30 mins to play with it before you have to reboot to get another 30 mins. They should give you a couple weeks to know if its for you or not before you buy it because Mac's are slow but I have them, hell I even have an AMAX II for my A2000 and I have MAC software but meh its not Amiga and just pretty room ornaments best left to look at. Only good thing I can say about a MAC is when it Crashes it makes a broken glass sound. Very cool.

I think that it is time that all the special chips that make an AMIGA work should be implemented as FPGAs or CPLD or a combination of both before it is impossible to actually do it.
