I appreciate this. There is a Jodo Shinshu temple in my city that I have been thinking of attending, and this provides some helpful, positive information about the tradition. Thank you for the post.

You've never heard of the Amitabha Sutra? The Buddha actually taught about Amitabha Buddha and the Pure Land.

And please don't forget. Amida is NOT symbolism, or just an idea. He is a real, Enlightened Being, living in a real, enlightened place: His Western Pure Land. Believe in Him, recite His Name (Namo Amituofo) in faith, and desire to be born in His Pure Land, and be reborn in His Pure Land at the end of this present human life. Our ticket out of endless samsara. Thank you. Namo Amida Bu

Please tell me where it says that laymen cannot be enlightened? The Buddha was very specific in forming a fourfold Sangha. Please tell me what these sexist passages are?

That is not true, Buddhavacana (The Word of the Buddha) was past on by the Theravada recension in oral form and date back to the time of the Buddha.

No need to go private messaging, just tell me what these sexist passages are. This is what happens when you stray from what the Buddha taught.

Not true. This is based on the Pure Land Buddhist Sutras. It is a genuine part of the Buddhist tradition.

There are numerous examples of lay followers in the four fold Sangha attaining enlightenment, so what, I am not interested. Just work on yourself. As for Bikkhu Bodhi, I couldn't care less what he has written. When you know the taste of salt, then you will know the taste of salt. When you know the taste of freedom you your self will know the taste of freedom. Give up this religious nonsense and just listen to what the Buddha taught, then apply it.

What a daft thing to say, of course we cannot be sure that what the Buddha taught (not preached) is exactly the words he used. But it was passed on in an oral form, that is the best information we have through the Pali Canon. All the other stuff, Amidas, Green Taras, White Taras etc are later additions, and are not mentioned in the Canon, they are made up. That doesn't mean they don't serve a purpose, but they are nothing to do with what the Buddha taught.

How many times do you have to be reincarnated as a cow or a hungry ghost before you've purged yourself of such vulgar racism?

No you dont. If you need anyone including a Buddha to tell you what to do or think, then you haven't understood. Great teachers point the way. IF YOU ARE A WOMEN and you dont think you can attain enlightenment, you will never attain enlightenment. Read the Kalama Sutta. Its not for anyone to tell you how to think.
