In my history of mathematics class, I had the following problem about amicable numbers and I thought I’d share it. Prove that if p is prime, neither p nor p^2 can be part of an amicable pair. Proof: Let s(n) be the sum of proper divisors function. s(p) = 1 However, since 1 has no proper divisors, then s(1) cannot be p. s(p^2) = p+1 s(p+1) ≤ 1+2+3+...+p = p(p+1)/2 1

@TheSingingNerd Same here. I first heard of them reading a book called "The HouseKeeper and the Professor" long after graduating. Now I see why they're not taught in college though. They seem to be too rare to have any obvious practical use.

I wonder if there is an infinite number of amicable numbers. If so I would presume the proof of such would be quite difficult. Any thoughts?

No, I should ask, because they made about 18 videos. But they did it all in one day, so maybe something didn't work out. I'll send you some other videos from David.
