AMG SL55 vs Porsche 911 review!

When it comes to drop-top sports cars, it doesn’t get much better than the Mercedes-AMG SL 55 and the Porsche 911 GTS.
But what happens if you’re in the market for one and can’t decide which to choose? Well, Mat’s here to help you make that decision!
So let’s see how the two compare, starting with the design. The new SL 55 rolls up with a super aggressive front end, with a big AMG grille straddling the centre with big air vents on either side. It’s a bit tamer around the back, but at least you get quad-tailpipes with it. As for the Porsche, it has the traditional sloping bonnet up front for that classic 911 look. The rear end’s a bit large, but that’s what you expect when you choose a convertible.
One thing these cars both have in common is the quality of the interior. The AMG comes with its customary jet engine-style air vents, good-quality materials throughout, as well as a huge infotainment screen in the centre. You’ll also find carbon fibre trim on the centre console. As for the Porsche, it’s also made with high-quality materials throughout, and in our opinion has a slightly better build quality. The dials also look absolutely gorgeous!
But of course, it’s not all about style… Sports cars need to have performance, and neither of these cars is lacking in that department! The Porsche is powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo flat-six that can deliver 480hp and 570Nm of torque. As for the AMG, it’s housing a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet that can deliver 476hp and 700Nm. However, whereas the Porsche only drives the rear wheels, the AMG sends power to all four!
When it comes to the price, the Porsche comes in at just under £125,000, although if you spend £6,000 more you can get it with AWD. As for the AMG, it’s a whole lot more expensive, coming in at over £147,000!
So is it worth splashing more cash on the AMG? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Guys a 911 has history behind it. It's basically in supercar league. An SL has always been just an ordinary roadster

Personally, would go GTS cuz I like the handling dynamics. But you can't go wrong with both. The SL is more about cruising comfortably and stylishly, with that roaring V8. Also to add to the bulbous-looking rear end of the 911 cabriolet, this is why I love the Turbo S cab. The rear wing really balances out the rear.

100% agreed. Especially comparing the Turbo vs Carrera models. The 992’s rear end hasn’t grown on me, especially when looking back at the beautiful 991.

@@MrOmarMoustafa I personally find the aero kit looks a bit too exaggerated. Every time I see one with an aero kit, I always feel like it's carrera trying to be a GT3.

@@jambear7862 The current Mercedes front end styling is going to age well. Mark my words And it looks nothing like a Maserati. Proportions, angles, overall aesthetic is totally different. What you’re doing there is akin to me discounting Porsche styling by saying “The Porsche front end looks like a VW Beetle” …which is actually a more accurate “insult” that what you delivered with the Maserati / Benz comparison

The major thing for me is the cruise control placement. Mercedes gets it right, Porsche gets it dead wrong. I will not buy a Porsche for that reason alone. The entire purpose of an automobile is motion. Cruise control controls motion; that has logical priority over a "phone"!
I already knew that the porche will win, cause Mat loves porche cars :D But still a fun video like always :D

As a serial SL owner, I’m a bit biased… But, the SL just sounds fab-u-lus! And, I think both rear’s look really good - the 911 reminds me of the old 356…
The only 2 sports cars I’ve driven in my life were an older sl55, and a new 911. The 911 was beautiful, but I have to say the V8 and big deep sounding exhaust of the sl55 kind of made it more exciting and fun

I agree! The rear of the convertibles are so strange I would get the Targa every time!
Great review of both cars. I cross-shopped these and am now a very happy owner of the SL55. Love driving it and prefer the interior of the SL.
Matt, it needs clarification - the SL 55 does not feature the electrified turbochargers, nor does even the 63. Within the SL model line it's the 43 only that has that technology applied. As for the AMG's current line up, the only models with an electrified turbocharger are C 43, SL 43 and C 63 S E PERFORMANCE.

I recently purchased the Mercedes-AMG SL63 from my local Benz dealer. I have owned BMW & Mercedes during the past 25 years. Absolutely luv my new SL. Super sporty, comfy & elegant. Haven't tried Porsche yet ...
Im a BMW fan, but since its release Ive fallen in love with the sl 63, or this 55. I agree the rear looks a bit odd compared to the front, which I love. I like the interior of it as well compared to other Mercedes products. Recently Merc has been doing too much closs and too many screens. the sl does not have that. But the car I do love
The 911 is an objectively better sports car, but that biturbo V8 is undeniably fun and exciting. Tough choice

never driven them but in terms of styling i'd definitely go for Mercedes. I feel like the AMG styling is much better and more aggressive which looks better on this type of car

Both look great. However with the news that the AMG GT convertible is being absorbed into the SL, I have to say the SL doesn't look nearly as classic as the GT vert.
I really love the porsche 911, but not the cabrio version (the Targa is much more stylish); at the same time the new mercedes sl is one of the most beautiful car I’ve ever seen (according to my tastes at least), therefore I’d buy that one

I live in the south of Spain and i Have seen the new 911 and the new mercedes amg gt and they both look good. They are testing them here and i see them almost every day. I have seen the new E-class as well and the Panemara, and the replacement of the Aventador.
For a [twin test] you still need a runway showdown - sprint, etc. Nice roadtest nevertheless. Al.

Good to see your normal bias shining through. Enjoyed the review, you should have done a tunnel test to get the full sound impact.

I like them both. How can you go wrong, they are both fantastic cars with tons of tech, and they are gorgeous, perfect for Summer fun and picking up girls!
I'd love to have to make a choice like this. In real life that is.
Two stunning cars! 9 times out of 10 in tests between Porsche against anything I prefer Porsche 992:s but in this match the win goes to Mercedes. Such a beautiful car.

I prefer the AMG, it looks more grown up. I am a creature of comfort so tend to lean towards the Benz and its equipment.
