Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve (Which One to Get in 2022?)

In this video, we compare the Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve to see which credit card to consider applying for in 2022. The Amex Platinum card and Chase Sapphire Reserve card are 2 of the best travel credit cards in 2022 and can provide a lot of value if you are deciding if these cards are worth it. Personally, I have the Amex Platinum, but I chose the Sapphire Preferred over the Sapphire Reserve due to the annual fee.
The Amex Platinum credit card has many different credits and benefits that I go over in this video and if you can get enough value from them, then its a great credit card to have. The Sapphire Reserve has much less credits and benefits to keep track of, but this credit card works very well within a Chase Trifecta setup.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve vs Amex Platinum Card is a very popular debate within the credit card community, but I think both are great. These credit cards are definitely not for everyone, but if you travel a lot, then they certainly can be good to have in your wallet.

    Thank you for another informative video. I am a cheapskate at heart. Even though I have the AmEx Platinum. I got it primarily for my wife. I figured she put up with me for 38 years. She at the very least deserves airport lounges and fine hotels. I make it a point to travel somewhere three times a year. Usually it's to see our son. Amex is a pain in the ass to use. But I'm old and I don't mind the challenge. I also have the Chase Sapphire preferred and I thank you for showing me how to maximize the points

    One thing to consider...Based on several experiences with both cards, I can say that Amex Platinum customer service is FAR superior. This is particularly true of the travel departments. Amex can't help you enough while Chase Ultimate Rewards travel (Expedia operated I think) is horrible when you run into issues. They put you on hold forever and then, in the end, you lose money.

    A couple of things: Chase has monthly doordash, instacart, and lyft credits/subscriptions, which they don't publicize as much as Amex does theirs. So, chase also more than makes up for its annual fee, when the travel credit is added, it also has a much better-earning rate on daily purchases, and it is a VISA card, which for people who actually travel is much more widely accepted than Amex. It also has great travel insurance. I love Amex, but for me personally, most of the Platnum credits are useless. I have Amex Gold and CSR, which works well for me.

    Great comparison Daniel! Very good point with justifying the annual fees, especially with the platinum! It's absolutely so easy to see the value in the credits but it's so important to consider if you would've been spending that money even if you didn't have those credits. If yes, then that truly can help to justify the annual fee. If not, then you're still spending excess cash and not helping to justify the fee!

    Chase is amazing with points and redemption. BUT, AMEX still beats them slightly with their customer service. Not saying AMEX is perfect, they have room for improvements. But I'd rather book trip through a company that back their cardholders up even when they don't have to, then have easier redemption and if something happens you have to hope VISA will cover it. This is just my experience. And CHASE is closed on weekends, even with the travel cards. AMEX is 24/7.

    Great video! I currently have the Gold and the BBP and was thinking about getting the Platinum to round out the Trifecta. The CSR is intriguing to me since it’d essentially be the same net AF as the Amex Platinum for me ($250). Would it make sense to get the CSR in my scenario (still under 5/24 but no other chase cards) or just stick with Amex?

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Justin! That's a good question because the CSR really is best if you get it with other Chase cards and intend on having a Chase Trifecta in place. It all depends on the value that you get from the Platinum card credits for whether that card is worth it for you. But personally, if I was in your situation with being under 5/24 and not having any Chase cards, I would go for the CFF, CFU and then either the CSP or CSR first because there is a ton of value to get from the welcome bonuses there first. I also tend to like the cheaper CSP over the CSR but that's just me. Then I would revisit the Platinum card because its the most expensive. Totally up to you though, but that's sort of my thoughts!

    Amex is probably going to lose me in March, or maybe get the Amex Gold. I am an Equinox member and at first was excited to have a credit. Then I found out I would have to spend over $100 more to “save” $25 per month. I am going back to my Navy Federal Flagship Rewards Visa. When I use their points to get a free flight I not only get a free flight but the miles from the airline. Their redemption is one cent per point no matter how you redeem.

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah that Equinox credit is a tough one for many people to get value from unfortunately! I personally like the Amex Gold card for most people more than the Platinum simply because its an everyday type of card, whereas the Platinum is more of a travel/benefits card. I know lots of people like what Navy Federal has to offer as well so good to hear that you've found value there as well!

    Thanks for this video! I recently got a pre-approved 150k offer for AMEX Platinum and am debating whether I want to take it. I currently have the Chase trifecta setup (CSP, CFU, CFF) plus the Chase Amazon Prime card. I do travel a fair amount in the year, use Ubereats, and hold an Equinox membership, so a lot of the perks of the AMEX card do match my lifestyle. However, I don't think I am that big of a traveler (I also rarely need hotels/car rentals) to justify the hefty annual fee of the Platinum- the usage of AMEX points also seem more complicated than Chase UR points. Any advice would be appreciated!

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks so much for watching! First of all, great to hear that you've got the Chase Trifecta with the Amazon Prime card already - great setup! You've definitely done your research because you're right, the Amex MR points are a little more complicated to use that Chase points because typically the best value comes from transfer partners. And a lot of times, its things like longer flights, international flights, or first class/business class flights where you will get the most value from. If transferring points for those things sounds too complicated, you can always redeem the points for flights through the Amex travel portal at around 1 cent per point (so 150,000 points is $1,500 towards flights!) So if those redemption options sound good to you or you want to do a little extra research to compare any other hotel/flight booking with the transfer partners, then you'll get good value from the points. Not as easy to use the points as Chase, but still has been good for me! But if you're getting good value from the Uber credits, Equinox credit ($300 of value really helps out that $695 annual fee if you're already paying for an Equinox membership) and other credits like that, then the annual fee can definitely be worth it. The welcome bonus is always important to consider and its a main reason why I decided to get my Platinum card a year ago because with my credit score and factors with that, I knew that worst case was I could close the Platinum card after a year and it wouldn't really do much to my credit score. Sorry for the long response haha but I hope that helps a little bit! Some of my other videos should have some additional info if you want to learn more too

    Great video, and found it very helpful!! I have the CSR and seriously considering the Platinum mainly for access to the lounges, included Delta, since I travel a lot and find the Priority Pass doesn’t allow me as much access to lounges at the airports I’m currently traveling to. I do like the 3x points and 50% added value of the CSR, but do you think that’s worth paying the extra $250 for the reserve instead of the $95 value of the CSP? In summary, do you think it’s best for me to get the Platinum (mainly for the lounge access to Delta, and possibly others not offered by Priority Pass) and downgrade to CSP, or keep the CSR (due to the value of points)? Thanks Daniel!!

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks so much Justin, I'm glad to hear it! Personally, I like the CSP more than the CSR because of the annual fee difference and the CSR doesn't offer too much more in terms of added value compared to the CSP. I love having the Preferred, especially for its 1:1 points transfer to partners because that feature is the same on the Reserve as well so I recommend it to many people and it could be a good downgrade option for you. The Platinum is definitely worth it if you travel several times a year and can take advantage of Delta and Amex lounge access. But it really comes down to the value of the credits for you to make it worth having. If you can bring that $695 effectively down to at least $100 or so from the value of the credits then I'd say its worth it for the lounge access. Hope that helps!

However, CSR is far better for those in the mid-west. Better travel insurance, wider acceptance, and the 1.5 cents per point via the travel portal. Somone who flies Alaska airlines, Frontier, or Southwest frequently will benefit far more with the CSR.

    Yeah the Reserve was really great before when the annual fee was lower and there was a huge 100k point welcome bonus offer. It can be a good long-term card to have for travel. But now I'd agree, there are a lot of other options that people could get instead

    I never really have called Chase much for my 2 Chase credit cards (Amazon Prime Visa Signature card) and for my Chase Freedom Unlimited which is apparently changing and already shipped to a Chase Freedom Unlimited Visa Signature card, but I did notice I more often then not get a native English speaker with Amex and if they aren’t native English, their English is still quite good and really no issues, but with Chase I usually always seem to get transferred overseas which I don’t mind as long as their English speaking ability is good enough, but another thing is each time which hasn’t been many times that I called Chase, the hold times for a rep is very long but I’m usually only a few minutes or pretty much right away talking to someone with my Amex Platinum card which is the no preset spending limit version which I think that’s how all Amex Platinum/gold cards are set up, but I could be absolutely wrong on that., someone please correct me if I’m wrong. I know it has really nothing to do with the card benefits but when you really need to speak to somebody and really be able to understand what they are explaining to you about a question or anything about your card(s) getting to talk to somebody faster that has a much better understanding and is able to speak English a lot better and a lot sooner than the hold time, waiting to talk to Chase, and sometimes the English is subpar could for some people be an issue. I can’t count how many times I had to repeat or rephrase my question to Chase or once even ask for another representative hoping their English speaking ability was better and the hold time took a while as well as I don’t think the rep with the not so good English speaking ability was very happy about me asking for another rep that could better understand my language and also I could better understand what they’re asking of or telling me in English language as a native English speaker who only speaks English and some and I deeply specify some German definitely not enough to carry on a conversation on the phone let alone with a credit card company even if that was an option with any of these card companies which only seem to have English and Spanish and some have French as well but I never came across one that afforded the ability to converse in German anyhow

    But for example. Any card that gives you Cashback. A way to take advantage of that benefit would be using it to the max. But with the credit utilization that means you're doing more bad than good ? Because I do that. I use as much as I can to generate the most Cashback possible as a reward. And always pay on time and complete

    If you must have only one, I feel like the Reserve is a safer bet, because there are STILL vendors and stores out there that don't accept American Express!!! Most notable of them is Costco. They don't take American Express. If you are a Costco customer, it sucks that your AMEX card is useless. Unfortunately, Costco is the best wholesaler of the bunch, so I am not going to switch to Sam's Club or BJ's to accommodate a credit card. We all know you go into these wholesaler clubs looking to get some diapers and you come out of with a $400 cart of items, so they make up a huge chunk of annual spending that can't be taken advantage of with an AMEX card.

    That’s not accurate about the chase sapphire card in terms of credits. There’s also a peloton credit, clear credit, and a few others outside of the $300 travel credit which this past year they also allowed folks to apply to any food spending as well.

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    2 жыл бұрын

    There are a few other smaller credits that are temporary on the CSR that I couldn't mention all in this video. Yes there is 10x points on Peloton on purchases over $1,400 but that's not a big benefit in my opinion and also only lasts until 3/31/22. There's a few other smaller temporary Lyft and Doordash benefits too but those also are only for the next 3 months so I didn't include them here. For Clear, the CSR actually does not offer this, but it does come with a Global Entry or TSA Precheck credit. Overall, I tried to keep the overviews as brief as I could for these cards so that the video didn't get too long but I tried to include all of the important must know benefits. I'll do a much more in-depth review of the CSR later in 2022 to cover any new details or changes like the ones you mentioned! Thanks for watching Christina!

    @@Daniel_Braun thanks for explaining! Just mentioned it because I have the CSR and know what credits it gives and think it recently added a lot which is helpful for people to know with the comparison. Also the peloton credit isn’t only for purchases over $1400 it’s $120 for the year for anything peloton related including the digital membership. There’s also a $199 Lyft pink credit, So between the $300 travel credit, $120 peloton, $199 Lyft pink, and $100 TSA pre check the card easily pays for itself depending on lifestyle. Just thought this important to note given most people want to know how the card can cover that annual fee and you mentioned in the video it can’t when it def can. I’m still considering adding the amex platinum as well.
