In 1962 he made a "stoneage-waltz" called "Wilma!", referring to the then extremely popular US television cartoon "The Flintstones". The US producers found outthat Owe Thörnquist was singing the line "Yabba dabba doo"fromthe TV series, and threatened to sue him. But they changed their main, andinstead used Owe Thörnqvist's song in one episode of "The Flintstones".

If you like storytelling, you HAVE to start listening to Evert Taube. Especially his early songs are just amazing stories, mostly inspired by his time as a sailor in the 1890s. Swedes barely knew anything about Buenos Aires, Adelaide, Malabar and other places he sang about, and were of course mesmerized. Today, many people haven't heard him sing, but they've been singing his songs a lot in school and afterwards, and he's one of the most widely covered artists in Sweden. His son Sven-Bertil Taube, who recently passed away, has done tons of covers of his dads songs. Probably a good choice for a Tuesday night hang. A few suggestions (he wrote hundreds of songs) Baladen om briggen Blue Bird of Hull (this one is really dark) Mary Strand Möte i monsunen Balladen om Gustav Blom från Borås (fantastic tale about the perils of judging people by their appearance) Frithiof och Carmencita Frithiof Andersson (n-word warning) Karl-Alfred (I suggest the 1921 recording) Calle Schewens vals (Sven-Bertils version is awesome)

Even though he mostly did novelty songs, he was probably the first in Sweden who understood the rock and roll idiom and also made recordings with a real rock and roll feeling back in the mid 1950s. He is still alive and was active at least a couple of years ago, and what is especially unique with him is that he owns the rights all the recordings of his songs. He was clever enough to buy them from the record companies Metronome and Philips where he recorded them.

You can tell that he took the early rock genre to heart and went with it to evolve the Swedish rock and roll market to what it is today.

In swedish Dagny is not pronounced with a hard "g". It is pronounced as it was spelled Dang-ny.

Yes, hope for some more reactions to Owe Thörnqvist. He was extremely popular back in the late 50's, early 60's, especially among us small kids. He took the rock'n roll sound to Sweden, even if it was played by the best jazz musicians in Sweden. His lyrics were always funny, complicated, intelligent and with small sassy undertones. We kids learnt the lyrics and sang his songs in school, on the last lesson before weekend. The teacher wasn't always so happy, because of the sassyness, but our classmates were cheering. Suggestion: Owe Thörnqvists "Per Olsson", his version of "Old McDonald had a farm".

Since we now in to some real oldies I suggest, for political insight, "Hanna från Arlöv" and "Vi måste höja våra röster" both comes with Nationalteatern. Both with lyrics that most swedes knows more or less and can sing along. And for your preferens of storytelling and skånska: Timbuktu: Flickan och kråkan eller Det löser sig. Mikael Wiehe: Flickan och kråkan.

When it comes to old school Swedish national pride, our language have always been a source of focus; This means that in a lot of romantic music, classical music, opera, "visa", styled songs.. You aren't REALLY a professional music if people can't hear you have the proper Swedish "Rolling R".. and in older styled recordings the sound can kind of disappear if you speak "sloppily", so a LOT of older singers ~really~ go in to the "R"-s extra.. as taught by vocal coaches, and requested by recording studios of the era.
