What better way to celebrate the 4th of July in a town called Americus! Americus, Kansas, is located in Lyon County and was the county seat of this area when it was known as Breckenridge County (when Kansas was a territory). Even though it eventually lost it's county seat battle with Emporia, it has remained a viable town. You might think there would be 365 days a year USA flags everywhere, but Americus is a normal small town - and that's what I liked about it. Hopefully you like this video too!

Great video!!! I usually travel through Americus, KS, whenever I am dorking around in Emporia and heading home to the Junction City area. Just pick up Ave F outside the western outskirts of Emporia and go north until it intersects with US HWY 56, then to Council Grove and beyond. Usually, I will stop at the fuel station on south side of Americus and refuel/get a snack. Was actually in town playing a silly game last weekend for about an hour - it is a nice little town!! IF you take Ave F to the intersection with US HWY 56, continue north on the gravely part for about a mile. Turn right at the nest intersection and travel roughly another mile or so and there you will come to the lone grave of a Civil War veteran. Is on private property but is just across a fence line and you can see it. Hope you do a video about DUNLAP, KS - interesting history of that little town!!

Thanks! This was my first time down that road and I stopped in at the store too 😊 good to know about the grave - would’ve loved to have seen that! I have read about Dunlap before and I certainly want to do a video about it someday!

@@TravelwithaWiseguy Little correction on that Civil War veteran's grave. Travel north on Ave F/Road F. Keep going north until it intersects with Road 370. Turn east on that road and travel roughly 1/2 mile or so. Gravesite will be close to a curve in the road and on north side of barbwire fence. Gravesite is surrounded by a metal fencing. Also, Dunlap has a historical African American Cemetery that was recently (within past few years) placed on the National Register of historical places. Plus, the signs pointing the way to the cemetery has "alternative" language on it, just a forewarning if you venture out to it. Cemetery is roughly 1 mile or so north of the city cemetery.

"Unbound gravel race"? Sounds interesting. Grew up on the gravel roads of southeast Iowa, as well as the sand roads along the river bottoms. And as I have traveled around the Midwest and Plains states, I have found the gravel roads change with the area they are in. Is there a web site for this event? It intrigues me!

@@SamanthaTull Thank you for the information! Growing up I had many miles just to get to a surfaced road. And Iowa's roads are heavily graveled to keep a load from disappearing into the mud. So I have clocked a few miles on them. I will look up the web site and maybe, if things work out, attend one of these events. Sound great to me! Thanks again, and hope you are experiencing a wonderful 4th.

Hey Coach Americus is doing O.K. apparently. My old G M. cars looked better, ran better and started in a way that made sense to me. I was an Okie, eventually transplanted into Kansas, lived in Mound City, Kansas, for a number of years. Mound City is a lovely small town with hills and maple trees. Some history in that it was a stop for Laura Ingalls family though not sure at which stage. Great old court house, county fair and rodeo in late summer, huge craft fair in autumn. South of Mine Creek and the Marais de Cynge.

Perfect video for July 4th! Also some questions. How many T-shirts do you have? Every video is a different one, do you pick one up at every town you stay at? Don't stop wearing new t-shirts, that's one of my fun spots in your videos, to see what's on your T-shirt. lol Also, why are most of the old town jail cells in the middle of the city? Is there some reason they did that?
@TravelwithaWiseguy
29 күн бұрын
I have way too many t-shirts haha. No idea how many, but I often buy them in the little communities I visit. My way to help the local economy :) Usually the jail is by a courthouse, but since this one wasn't a county seat I'm not sure. I'm guessing it was moved from it's original location to the park.
I think Stars and Stripes Forever should be our National Anthem, excellent choice for opening music! As always...
