"Ackee is dangerous and it takes a trained expert to prepare it" 😂😂😂 all we do here in Jamaica is just wait for the fruit to open on its own while still on the tree. Once its opened, even slightly its edible. DO NOT pick and force open the fruit or else ☠.. thats all.. Love from 🇯🇲

The Jamaican patty and jerk chicken were wrong. That patty crust is too heavy, it should be lighter and flakier with a slight crisp. That jerk chicken looks like it was done in the oven, jerk chicken should be grilled/smoked after seasoning with special jerk spice blend (difficult to find authentic jerk outside of Jamaica). The festivals looked so so.

The ackee is a fruit that needs to open on its own to release the poisonous gasses. If you open the fruit forcibly, the gasses will remain in the fruit and that is when it can cause death. That Jamaican patty doesn't look anything like the ones made in Jamaica. Correction that is fried dumpling and not festival as stated.

Interesting fact. You can trace the origins of patties back to ancient North East Africa. The Moors brought their version to Spain and Portugal giving you the empanada/empada. Italians got theirs from the Roman occupation of North Africa giving you the panzerotti. The Britain Cornish pasty is developed from their interactions with the Romans and Spain. Jamaica patties share more in common with an empanada not a cornish pasty. But the connection is attributed to the English. Anyway given the connection to Africa, it makes sense people in Jamaica knew what to do with it to make it iconic. 😁THANKS.
