When Britain supported the invasion of Iraq, I gather that it was done on the condition that the US makes a commitment to fixing the Israel-Palestine issue. But after extracting Britain's support for the former, George Bush quietly forgot about the latter. Despite being alies, the US has no quams about stitching Britain up - which happens quite a lot.

@@zmajoljupkaI kinda agree with the whole tourist thing, we have a bad reputation but in reality they are the minority. You just get to hear about them because they're the loudest. Those people are exactly the same in their home towns, its not because they're entitled necessarily, its because they party hard because they want to completely forget about the shit they deal with on the daily. As are the those who complain they have nothing yet are among some of the richest. Again they are the minority, you just get to hear about them because they're the loudest. The people that voted for brexit were also very varied. You have the snobby rich who just think they're better than everyone else, and you have the poor who were led to believe that they would be richer if we weren't in the EU. The majority of the Uk want back in because they were lied to and manipulated. People are easily led when they have nothing . As a Brit, I was always very wary of Spanish, Turkish and greek men on holiday. I'm blonde and they had no respect for my personal space. I would get stared at to the point it was creepy and one even tried to SA me by dragging me into the Loos. A lot of women here are wary of those particular men. The majority of us are just normal lol. We're just not loud enough for you to notice

In the UK, we are exposed to American politics through all forms of media. Whereas they have less access to the culture or politics of Europe. This happens even more on social media, where English language content I'd dominated by American content. Quite naturally, the extremes of American life are those that make the best media content, so our views may be a liitle away from the actual truth. But we in the UK do like to make jokes about everyone, even ourselves, which American don't fully understand. After spending 17 days being the only Brit with 35 Americans touring Italy, I can confirm that you Americans are very loud, especially when given Alcohol 😂

I think maybe the differences became most noticeable in the 2nd World War when American troops came over here. They were well fed, had money and didn't shy away from showing it. Britain had been struggling for two years and were on severe rationing. The perception was that the Americans thought that they came over to 'save us' Although grateful for their assistance it is not hard to see where resentment might start.

A very likely scenario. Prior to the war USA was considered a "second home" (mainly to the rich or the poor fortunate enough to leave). Britain and USA 1850's to 1935 did more trading, vacations and business together than Britain and Europe. However... it was a certain "type" of people that both were meeting, open minded polite people. During the war, it did seem to change... There were quite a few instances of conflict too. There were American Officers that also came over and demanded that British businesses introduce racial segregation to please the American troops and make them feel like home, with one instance leading to a military battle on the streets. After this incident, some places introduced segregation but baring White Americans in protest. I think you may of hit the nail on the head on any long standing "distrust" and stereotyping. I think short term... it's just guns and medical care... and that's it. Well spotted... it never occurred to me until your statement... and it's kind of sad that a massive bond was tarnished by a period where both had to fight side by side.

Being an adult and believing in Gods is the same to me as being an adult and believing in Father Christmas, the Easter Bunny etc. Christianity is part of our culture but it was never suggested to me as being real, just part of our history before science. 80% of Americans apparently do believe in at least one God. There are two things going on primarily. As a hangover from our class system we don’t like the idea of someone getting too big for their boots - America has its claims of being the ‘greatest nation in the world’ (which no one else does, certainly not in the institutionalised way America does) along with the clear evidence that there is so much wrong with the US (as there is everywhere) coupled with the general American ignorance about the rest of the world (how do you know it’s the greatest if you don’t know about anywhere else). In this way it is the ‘too big for their boots’ idea in the form of a nation rather than an individual. And just as in the UK we like to knock someone down a peg or two if they’re seen this way, the same applies collectively to the US. I don’t think people are doing it consciously but it’s just an ingrained reaction. You can pick at lots of various elements to explain it but that’s it in a nutshell, from a Brit who has spent a lot of time all over the US in the last two decades and have had two American partners so I like to think it’s a fairly informed opinion

  • @BillySugger1965

Very interesting topic. I grew up in a tourist area in the UK and we tended to notice the loud, brash Americans, just as many people in Mediterranean resorts notice the drunk, undignified Brits. But I grew up being approached by nice, quiet, friendly people with American accents asking me politely where some place was. And I got to realise that there are many more polite Americans than brash, loud ones. Culturally though there are issues. Many Brits do feel threatened, even if unconsciously. Our cultural identity is being diluted by American culture, though we conveniently forget that we exported far more to America. We see populist politics in America as a threat to peace, stability and prosperity in the world, while we ignore the effects of Brexit and populism in the UK on our own neighbours. I think the “Britain is no threat”, or “Britain is cute”, attitudes are rather condescending and British people can feel rather insulted by those, especially when we think of ourselves as more cultured, sophisticated and historically grounded than Americans. So yes, there is a complex relationship between our two cultures and populations. That said, I have many American friends whom I value greatly, and thoroughly enjoy our small differences.

Hi I don't think most Brits look down at Americans. I'm British and will probably live the rest of my life here in the UK. I've had several holidays in the USA and enjoyed my stays. The Americans that I've spoken to on my holidays were decent hard working folk, with vim and vigor us British would find hard to match. I was holidaying on the Hawaiian islands, waking up on September 11th 2001 in my Kauai hotel room, to the dreadful news of the terrorist attacks on your nation. The staff were visibly shaken, and my heart went out to them. A week later, my girlfriend and I were in New York witnessing the effects of the barbaric attack on the faces of the City's residents. This had, as you can imagine, a marked effect on our 3 week holiday. But strangely, not wishing to be elsewhere, I found a deep warmth from your nation's citizens, and promised myself to return in happier times. May the road rise up to you, your loved ones, and the United States of America 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 Robert

I remember seeing the film Independence Day while on holiday in Florida when it first came out. Everyone in the theatre was whooping, cheering and chanting 'USA!' in certain scenes, which was very weird to me. I then saw the film again when I got home and in the same scenes, especially the big speech, people in the now British audience were groaning out loud in the same moments. I remembering thinking about the concept that while the USA were coming up with a gameplan to fight other countries were depicted as sitting around a radio waiting...which is a concept which comes up a lot in certain Hollywood films. It's not the biggest reason, but that perception of other countries in films certain is eyeroll worthy

Never have I looked down on them. It all depends on the individual and how they are brought up to perceive other countries and their people.

British people are quite reticent when meeting new people and take time to weigh people up whereas Americans are very open and friendly on first meeting which can come across as brash, loud and intrusive, which is a no no here. Loud, outspoken British people get the same treatment if they don't dial it back as well. Its like a stereo speaker. Keep the volume down at 5 until people get to know you then gradually start turning the volume up over time to give people time to adjust!

I think what he was missing is cultural aspects in particular modesty, there is a tendency to play down or not brag about achievements, it is almost implied we are happy for each other we just dont say it, similar about complaining directly which is seen as rude. We mau sacrifice personal rights to help the common good, in general we have more socialist attitudes either towards society or maybe a community or in group. I dont dislike Americans or look down but i do appreciate there arr differences

Let me start by saying that "looking down" or conceiving Americans as idiots, by Europeans is the wrong question and idea. To be honest there is only a very small group of Americans that fit that bill to a T, and those are the ones, that glorify the US, but have absolutely NO knowledge of anything outside the US. (The whole universe, evolves around the US.) The main problems Europeans have is with US systems !!! The healthcare system, the education system, the political system (meaning here the 2 party system for the Federal Goverment, which is barely democratic, as it has 1 more part as a 1 party system thus it is not a communist system ideology.), the financial system (read credit score), the car-centric system, the food awareness system (read how faulty is the FDA??). It is those systems that lead to lack of knowledge of what is happening outside the US, creates an incredible amount of household debts etc. Just saying, try to see that is not hatred against any or any specific US citizen, rather a huge dislike of how the country is managed, so to speak. Who thought Americans are Too Direct ??? That is just moronic. Ever heard of Germans, or the Dutch ??? (I have been told by Germans I am more direct as Germans are, but being Dutch that certainly feels true.) No Europeans do not feel threatened by the US, as it is all a geopolitical game. However the point made was, the US has more firepower, and can produce more weapons in short terms as most other countries. Thus it feels like it is a superpower, because it can make a fist a bit faster as others can.

We also like the US as a country but not what is happening to it and how the rich and politicians seem to be out to destroy their own nation, $1 at a time. So we worry for our cousins across the pond, while also being worried about our our nation's future, as the controls, that were in place decades ago are gone and everything is eroding, quite quickly.

As someone from Wales, we dont like to be called British, because British automatically implies English to non-Brits. And the way England and Wales view each other can probably be said the same as Americans and British or European and British. We in Wales (and Scotland and Northern Ireland) have a long turbulant history with England and so we still have a slight disdain for the English power dynamic over the rest of us in the UK and British Isles. Its not necessarily directed at English themselves, but more the government, although if an English person has an obvious problem with us - we will bite back if we feel its necessary.

That’s humanity for you and you can’t generalise, every person on the planet has reason to look up to or down upon someone else due to actions taken, opinions made known, personal biases, mob mentality whether warranted or not so it’s fair to say as individuals people here and there from any country will have negative opinions. I do not hold a negative opinion for example in fact of you guys I would say I look up to you as because of your status as content creators you are a certain level of celebrity status compared to me who has no presence plus you are always very gracious and take an interest in my countries culture and as a viewer we invest not so much in your content after a while but in you as people, it makes us happy to see your faces and hear your voices every week or so, we laugh, cry and share your life in some very limited capacity so looking down is very much not a UK on US thing it’s individuals on individuals or groups 👍

I personally have nothing against individuals. If anything modesty and wish to be unimposing is our governing character - the contrast can be a little grating. I cant say I have seen that in person. Since the dominance of social media, I've been attacked innumerable times by 'experts' telling me my job (Luthier, and Musical Instrument Technician) I point out that I studied (the equivalent of one of your degree) hold professional memberships (TMIET MIMIT FRSA) and have 40 years professional experience in the field... Of course, don't heed my professional advice if you don't want to, it's a choice... But to lecture me on how wrong I am! I've even been told how to use my own first language, that I used when I trained as a journalist, was published in, abd awarded a merit! (I've even been told that Scotland is part of England LOL🤣) To be fair, most of this stems from a predominantly insular, and ignorant, general education system found in many places, apparently governed by local political, and sometimes religious, tenets. But, I'm afraid, this does unfortunately often come across as sheer arrogance of the worst kind. PS I've now learnt to walk away, block if neccessary... Engaging with these people just doesn't work!

We look down on everyone ( not just Americans ) which gives us a ( bad ) reason to think we are better..... notwithstanding all our inventions and all our famous Scientists, Poets, Writers, Engineers.... we still feel a need to belittle others - for reasons unknown to me. I have found the average American to be a more civilised person toward me than many of my own fellows and I am equally disposed in returning the civility. Actually hatred is the other face of fear. There may also be some kind of inferiority complex going on over here and envy. I never had any envy of US Citizens until we - as a country - decided to leave the European Union. Now I do rather envy US citizens on the grounds that they are free to sojourn such vast areas and landscapes throughout half of North America, whilst my fellows have decided that we ( as a group ) should / will all be better off on our tiny little insulated island. `F` - em ! See now how I hate them ( my own fellows ) ? That is on the grounds that I fear ( fear being the other face of hate ) the hole they are going to dig themselves into next - since I must go with them. Oh, I was an Englishman in New York City. The vast majority of New Yorkers were very nice to me, not least on the grounds of my accent. Sometimes it was rather amusing. Before going to the `States I`d never heard of Iced Tea. So there I was outside a shop at 55th St / 7th Ave and saw a poster for Iced Tea. I walked in to this medium sized store and asked the lass behind the counter for some of this stuff called `Iced Tea.` She calls out to one of the shop assistants, " Hey, Yollanda, this English fella here wants some of our strawberry tea".... everyone in the shop ( store assistants as well as customers ) started darting toward the fridges for me. I felt like a film star or something. If you`re English and have never been to the `States you should go. You`ll be treated well ( and sometimes have the piss taken out of your accents ). If you are from the `States you should come here. In general you`ll be treated well and often have the piss taken out of your accents. The New York coppers I encountered were quite unforgivable in their piss - taking of my accent. All in good fun.

Where I live in East Anglia (east of England) there are a fair few Americans living here due to the proximity of airbases like Mildenhall and Lakenheath. The ones I have met and talked to have been likeable and not at all like the loud mouthed cartoonish extremes I have seen in news footage or documentaries in the last ten years or so. It seems that a fair few Americans have moved to the U.K. or Europe as their own country seems to be shifting in uneasy political directions in recent years.

I found it dunny, how there is only the perception of ´America and Britain being cousins´ and not taking into consideration, that the USA had a lot of different influences from many European countries even in the early days: the Dutch, the German, the French, the Spanish, the English and only a little bit later Italian, Chinese etc. (indigenous influence is left out on purpose, as it sadly was suppressed for to long) All these different countries and nations had an influence with their traditions, religions, values and languages. Don´t forget, the USA almost ended up with German as a main language although not having an official language until this day (much to the surprise of a lot of Karens 😉)

any american who claimes "we're the greatest" "we're the best" rubs me the wrong way basically. Being the richest currently doesn't mean "the greatest" like many americans seem to think? Its like if I met a billionare and they told me they were the greatest human ever, um no, having loads of money doesn't make you the greatest, as every or most people is usually great at something specific, like how do you catagories being the best ever? Its impossible. I would automatically feel hostile towards the billionare because in my view they are looking down on me and everyone else, the same mentality goes with nations. If anyone from a country claim they are living in the greatest country then everyone else will feel offended because that means you've automatically put other countries below you. Put it this way, maybe it has happened but I've never seen someone british on popular media, claim we are the best ever, yet so many times in american media I have seen americans say completely seriously "we're the best, we're the greatest" and yeah it does make me feel offended because it feels like they are automatically looking down on every other country to claim that. Of course this is me generalising and I don't see single americans like this, nor do I see you guys like this.
