They're waterproof. Leave notes in your jeans, put them through the wash and they'll be fine. They don't rip either.

oh they do rip, in fact it's most often seen from people on the lower rungs of the affluence ladder that cause these rips and tears because of how badly handled the notes get, it's shocking just how bad of a state they get into sometimes.

To be exact, this is specifically a Bank of England note and believe it or not banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own bank notes, even though Bank of England notes are valid throughout the UK.

  • @frglee

Three different Scottish banks presently issue banknotes, the Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and the Clydesdale Bank. £5, £10, £20, £50 and £100 notes are issued by each bank, the same sizes as the English notes, (except for the £100 note which is not issued in England) and there are older versions that are still in circulation. The 4 Bank of England banknotes also circulate in Scotland, but I think they are generally removed from circulation in Scotland when the banks get them and returned south of the border. The two banks in Northern Ireland that presently issue banknotes are Ulster Bank and Bank of Ireland, but there were four others once. The British Crown Dependencies of the Isle of Man and the Channel Isles all have their own banknotes and coins but accept British banknotes, as do the 14 British Overseas Territories.

@@frglee are you sure there are only 2 in Northern Ireland? I was there June last year and Danske Bank also issues banknotes. It’s a strange set up when you have “Danish Bank” notes which naturally can not be used in Denmark and Bank of Ireland ones which cannot be used in the (Republic of) Ireland!

@@andyt8216 There are 3 note issuers in Northern Ireland. Danske (the old Northern Bank), Ulster Bank (part of Nat West) and Bank of Ireland. AIB or First Trust stopped issuing notes last year. The other two stopped issuing notes in 1959 and 1968, way before my time. Danske and Bank of Ireland issue £100 notes. I haven't seen one in years (I remember seeing one in the 70s or 80s), but they do exist. Northern Ireland didn't issue bank notes for the first few years after we we set up (from 1921 to 1929). Weird. I believe any bank issuing notes had to be in existance in 1844. England still had a private bank issuing notes until 1921 and Wales stopped in 1908.

End of next month the last of the paper notes get removed from circulation. They won't be accepted in stores but the banks will still swap them out at face value. And yeah, the paper ones used to feature slightly raised print, but the braille style dots are a new feature of the polymer notes for an added extra bit of help. For the UV light, check out the Royal Bank of Scotland notes, their UV designs are way cooler than the Bank of England ones, Mackerel and Otters with pretty UV highlights.

As is the Worlds first postage stamp... the Penny Black - UK stamps are the ONLY stamps in the world that do not have the country name on them (just the Queens & now the King's head !). Although a Penny Black stamp can cost over £100,000, they are NOT rare and you could buy one for as little as £400 (so don't get conned as many people have paid way over the face value because of ignorance). 😂

I found it strange the first time I went to the USA that you could hand over a $100 bank note in a store/restaurant and no one would care. In the UK, if you hand over a £50 note (not that you would as they're as rare as rocking horse poo) people look at you like you're a forger. The £20 note is the largest you'll see on a regular basis. My biggest problem in the States was since of the coins didn't have the value written on numerically. It took me a while to while to find out what each was worth (pre mobile internet days).

The irony is that an increasing number of shops in the UK don't accept cash, everything is electronic either phone app, contactless card or chip n pin. I haven't used cash for at least 5 years. Even some cities, esp London, street buskers will have card readers rather than expecting cash as a tip.

Two features not mentioned: #1 is that the serial number of the note is printed twice but in different orientations. #2 Also, if you managed to circumvent the “Orion constellation” feature and photocopy the note, all notes use. Colours that photocopiers cannot reproduce. All BoE notes have the copy-write symbol on them, so you know that you shouldn’t copy the notes.

The 5 Pound note is approximately 4 and 9/10 inches wide or 12.5 cm . And the 10 Pound note 5 and 2/10 inches or 13.2 cm wide. Sorry I don't have a 20 Pound note to measure at the moment . When her Majesty dies new notes will be issued . But the old ones that we have now will still be in circulation for some time . Something that American may like to know . The face on the coins of Charles will face the other way . This is tradition that has gone on for several hundred years .
