Americans React to UK Road Markings - These Are SO Different!

Reacting To My Roots
P.O. Box 439
Jasper, Indiana 47547

In this video we react to UK road markings for the first time. We're shocked at how different the road markings in the UK seem to be compared to what we're used to. While some of these lines and markings are similar to ones we're used to seeing, most of them were completely new to us. One example of this are the squiggly road markings we saw multiple times in this video. What does traffic do when seeing these lines?
The more I learn about driving in the UK, the more I realize just how much drivers have to be aware of and how difficult the theory test must be.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

The diagonal white lines on the centre section of a road at about 6:40 are to warn you to keep out of that section- it is usually leading up to something like a small traffic island in the centre of the road, or a pedestrian crossing with a central 'island' between the two directions of traffic. This is what she referred to as 'Hatch Markings at about 10.07 in the video. You were exactly right about the yellow 'Box Junctions' They tend to be at intersections where at certain times of day there is heavy slow moving traffic, and if you just drove on to the junction with no clear exit, then you would block vehicles trying to enter from the left or right, or trying to turn right in front of you. You might need to drive in the bike lane to position yourself if you were approaching a left turn that would cross the bike lane - but you can ONLY do this if the line is broken, and there are no cyclists in the lane just there. A 'Red Route' has double red lines painted along the outer edge of the road, and indictes there is no stopping under any circumstances - including on the verges or footpath next to the road. The white zigzag lines are leading up to a pedestrain crossing, and are warning that there is no stopping there (apart from literally stoppinng for the pedestrians, of course), as it would reduce visibility at the crossing. You will often also find yellow zigzag lines outtside school entrances for exactly the same purpose. No stopping there, for the safety of the students.

The USA trialed the same road markings, and they were popular. But it's on states to implement it and they all revolted at the idea because it'd cost money and they prefer text over imagery(part racism because it means you need to learn English to drive and part because it means people don't have to learn the symbols which means people need less education on road rules to pass tests). I suspect the last part about tests being easier is by far the biggest part, the USA has a heavy dependency on cars, making it easier to pass a driving test makes that dependency on cars easier and prevents future generations being locked out of society.

White zigzags are commonly found either side of pedestrian crossings. They are designed to indicate that parking and overtaking in these zones is strictly prohibited. The hatched areas in the middle of the road are also called "ghost islands".

  • @stevieinselby
    @stevieinselby9 күн бұрын

The zig-zag lines are used on the approach to a pedestrian crossing, and also indicate that you must not park or overtake in that section. 🚲 The bike box at the traffic lights is called an "advanced stop line" and it means that cyclists can use the bike lane to get to the front of the queue and then position themselves ahead of cars for when the lights turn green rather than having to keep over to the side. This is really helpful for cyclists who are turning right and don't have to fight their way across lanes of traffic, and reduces the risk of a left-turning driver side swiping a cyclist who is alongside them. 4:12 You can see the "Give Way" sign on the right approaching the junction, and then at the junction there are Give Way signs on both sides of the road, if you had paused the video half a second earlier then one of them would still have been in frame! Depending on how busy the road is and what the visibility is like, you can get an advance warning sign, a sign at the junction, both or neither. Give Way (Yield) is _much_ more common in the UK than STOP 🛑, which is usually only used at junctions with very limited visibility and especially where it might not be obvious to drivers that they can't see what traffic may be coming on the main road. Diagonal striping (hatching) down the middle of the road can be used to separate traffic flows. This creates space to add right-turn lanes or space for traffic turning right into driveways and for pedestrian islands. It also has the visual effect of making the road appear narrower and so encouraging drivers to keep their speed down. It has no specific legal meaning or regulation, but is just a general warning to keep out of that area unless you really really need to. Speed limits *must* be marked with signs, but may also be shown with road markings _as well_ for additional visual impact. (One exception to this is in the New Forest national park, where road markings may be used alone). In the absence of signs, the default speed limit is 30mph in built-up areas, or 60mph on single-carriageways and 70mph on dual-carriageways and motorways (also indicated by the Ø sign) (lower limits apply to goods vehicles, buses and any vehicle towing a trailer). What she said about edge markings was a bit misleading. White lines are used to mark the edge of main roads, and _don't_ restrict stopping or parking. She then said they are "often used on clearways" ... clearways are shown by a circular sign consisting of a blue background, a red circle and then red diagonal lines cutting it into quarters. Sometimes on rural main roads you might see a clearway sign with "for 15 miles" underneath it, so you can't assume that just because you can't see a sign _here_ that it doesn't apply, but unless you have passed a clearway sign, there is no general prohibition on stopping on a white edge line (although it may not be a very smart thing to do...) The green sign with 1/2/3 diagonal lines on it (or sometimes blue sign, occasionally black-on-white) is a "countdown" marker, and they give you a 300 yard, 200 yard and 100 yard warning of a major junction/exit ramp. Mostly used on motorways and main roads with grade separated junctions, they can also be used approaching roundabouts or other junctions that drivers may not have good visibility of. 12:12 the arrow in the middle of the road indicates that you are approaching a solid centre line or hatching and drivers need to make sure they are back on the left side of the road imminently. There are usually two of them a few lines apart. Box junctions (the yellow criss-cross) can be used in locations where traffic may be queued back from the next junction. It isn't about traffic creeping forward, it's more that if you've got a green light but you can't _clear_ the junction because traffic is queued beyond it then you need to hang back so that you aren't blocking cross-traffic if the lights change and you're still stranded in the middle of the junction. It may be necessary to drive in a cycle lane if there is a car turning right and the road isn't wide enough for you to get past them without using the cycle lane, or if you need to let an emergency vehicle past, or if you want to create more space for oncoming traffic to pass cyclists or parked cars. (Basically, cycle lanes marked with paint are a waste of time, they don't do anything to protect cyclists but they allow councils to pretend that they have got some green credentials)

  • @enemde3025

The green sign with the white diagonal mark is a countdown marker for a junction. There are 3 of them on the run up to the junction. The furthest away has 3 lines, then 2 lines then 1 line (like the one you commented on). They are placed at 100 yard distances apart, before the junction. We don't have "patrol" police in the UK. The zigzag lines are a visual reminder that there’s a pedestrian crossing, so that was a good guess, but you’re also not allowed to stop there except of course in traffic. They’re very common around schools since there’s invariably a pedestrian crossing near school entrances, so they’re a reminder for the school run mums that they’re not allowed to stop there to drop the kids off. The bicycle lane solid/broken line thing is pretty straightforward. If you’re driving along a road with a cycle lane and there’s a turning on the right you might well see the cycle lane marking change from solid to broken so as to allow you to use the bike lane if a car wiring to turn right is partly blocking the traffic lane. Obviously if a cyclist is there or approaching from behind they have priority in the cycle lane and you have to wait, but if it’s clear and safe then you’re allowed to cross the broken line. You also sometimes see broken bike lane markings on roads that were built long before cycle lanes were a thing and there wasn’t space to widen it to add them. In those cases a solid bike lane line might actually be difficult for larger vehicles to comply with, so the broken line is kind of a concession to practicality while also serving to tell motorised traffic to make allowances for cyclists. Ideally you’d keep bikes and motorised traffic seperate of course but it’s often not easy on an island about the size of Oregon but with over 15 times the population. Oh, and that bit where there was a traffic light with a big bicycle painted across the road in front of it? No, it’s not a bicycle crossing, it’s for cyclists to wait in for the lights to go green ahead of the cars. This annoys some motorised as it stops them driving off as fast as they like, but it’s so any cyclist intending to turn right at the intersection when the lights change can get in position to do it safely without trying to cross from the left hand side of the road while the traffic is moving.

The Zigzag lines at the crossing is for the crossing. You are not allowed to overtake or park in that zigzag area. It is to keep a clear view for peds. The box junction also know as a yellow box junction is to help the flow of traffic. If you are entering a yellow box you must make sure you can make it to the other side and not block traffic. The hatch markings, the ones you thought might be a cycle lane is just a divider to further separate traffic. There's 2 types, 1 with solid white line that you shouldn't cross and 1 with broken lines that you can cross if doing so helps the flow of traffic behind you. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for the cool video.

The "Traffic signs regulations and general directions" 2016 is a statutory instrument, that is government regulations for all road marking signs, road works etc. it is over 500 pages long. Every sign or marking is backed up with legislation that is legally enforceable. The other thing that is different in the UK is a lot of this is governed by cameras. Bus lanes are monitored by cameras, speeds are monitored by cameras, traffic signals are monitored by cameras. There are not that many traffic police as there are so many cameras. The ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is another thing in the UK, traffic police cars are fitted with them and many roadside cameras do this as well, these check whether your car has all the legal documentation and knows when and where you are at any time you are on the road.

OMG that's my home town!!! Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk (3.50) (map of UK - its the bottom half of the big round bit on the right, just under the big dark green splodge in the middle on a satellite map). A lot of traffic violations are by CCTV and a letter in the post, rarely do you see a policeman unless its on the motorway or major cities. Yellow markings are keep clear. Red are don't even think about stopping. We use placenames in black and white signs for local traffic, green signs are for main roads (the ones that count down from three stripes are on dual carriageways / motorways counting how far the exit is) and blue signs are for motoroways. The shape of a sign means different things and we have coloured cats eye on different parts of the road - red for near side of motorway, orange for offside and both mean don't cross, green for exits and white to divide lanes

6.30 she talks about these road markings at 10.04. 11.15 that sign is a countdown marker to an exit, has 3 lines, then 2 then 1 line to your exit junction. The zig zag lines mean you can't stop on them. Also on a red light we have to stop, unlike where you can turn on a red light, we'd have to wait for a filter light with a green arrow. Would love to see how you two would do on a theory test 😂

The zigzags just before the traffic lights are another way of enforcing a parking restriction ie. don't park just in front of the traffic lights. I've got no idea why they're different, but that's all they're they're for. Along that note, we can also get single or double red lines along the side. The difference is that with the yellow lines, you can pick up or drop off, but really you shouldn't be parked there for more than about 5 minutes, whereas red lines means no parking OR picking up or dropping off. A single line would have a sign saying at what times these restrictions apply, they're not particularly common but enough so that everyone knows what they mean. For example, there could be single yellow line outside of an industrial estate, with restrictions only for parking from 8am-6pm on weekdays to allow lorries to get in during working hours, but you can park when they're closed. The box with the bike in it at the traffic lights is the waiting place for bicycles (and I think possibly motorcycles as well), so that they can be easily seen before the lights turn green. Otherwise, say a cyclist in the bike lane wanted to turn right at the traffic light, they would have to cut across traffic that may be turning left at the same junction. Essentially, it makes the cyclists more visible to the cars to prevent accidents. Someone may want to drive in the cycle lane if there's another car in their lane waiting to turn right and utilising the cycle lane would allow the driver to get past when they wouldn't otherwise have been able to. Final thing, jaywalking does not exist in the UK (or as far as I'm aware, pretty much anywhere else in Europe). If it's safe to cross, you can just cross. An island for a pedestrian could easily exist nowhere near a junction or a zebra crossing (a crosswalk if you couldn't guess). The difference with our zebra crossings is that vehicles must stop to allow pedestrians to cross at the zebra crossing if there are any waiting. This gives the pedestrians the priority over traffic

No exception there. Do not *enter* the junction until the *exit* is clear - applied to right turns, this means you can *enter* the box so long as your *exit* road is clear, regardless of traffic coming in the opposite direction and preventing you from actually making the turn straight away. This does not make right turns an exception, just a different application of the basic rule.

The bicycle marking you saw at the start is a zone that bicycles can advance to, past the waiting cars, at a traffic light. The box junction is one of the most contentious things people choose to ignore. The point of a box junction is to prevent cars from blocking exit points that will cause a traffic jam if you stop within the box. We used to have a PSA (Public Service Announcement) where it had a man stop within the box junction and a large hand comes down and lifts him away, the tag line was "Ooh I've been pinched!" But 80% of people just stop in the box junction and cause jams because people are impatient and people believe that stopping in the box will get them there quicker. But they don't want someone else entering their spot and making them even more late to whatever they need to get to. You should only enter if there's space on the other side, otherwise you need to wait before you enter....I don't even drive a car and I know this...

The box with the bicycle in it at traffic lights is for bikes to sit in. It lets them get away at the lights first and so they don’t have to sit next to a car that might want to turn left. The yellow line on the side of the road is a restricted parking line, usually only restricted at certain times of the day. We also have double yellows which means “no parking” but you may load or unload (where the vehicle is being continuously accessed). The hatch marks in the centre of the road are usually there to separate traffic in higher speed areas and/or when the road has a segregated turn lane (right turn box) at some point. It’s to help with the flow of traffic. The yield triangle is a prior warning that a yield is coming up. Double white lines down the middle tell you not to overtake (literally, not to cross the line. So if you can pass without crossing the line, it’s OK). Box junctions are used in areas where traffic can build up to prevent people blocking the junction for crossing traffic. You can only enter if you’re sure you can exit during the current green light or if you’re turning right. You can drive in a broken line cycle lane to get around someone turning right, for example, or if you’re in a wide vehicle. They would only appear on narrow, slower traffic roads. A red route is a route where there is absolutely no stopping, even for loading/unloading. Red routes normally are time limited, such as 7am to 7pm. Those zig zag lines warn you that a pedestrian crossing is coming up.

The yellow box junction are usually used on busy roads where if someone was to stop their car would cause traffic to build up. A lot of our towns and cities suffer from congestion. You’d be amazed how quickly one idiot stopping in a box junction can cause traffic to build up and bring an area to a standstill. They’re also used across level crossing to prevent cars stopping on the crossing. In the past you’d have had a crossing keeper but now level crossings are automatic or control in a control centre so there is more space for human error. They’re also used in front of fire or ambulance stations so that they can get out easier.

A report done a few years back showed that around 50% of UK license holders would fail if they were to take the driving test again. For the most part, road markings are warning signs. The signs that really should be looking for are on the side of the road. Like the white hatching down the center of the road which marks the divide instead of a raised surface or barrier.

Yes, our “Give way” is the same as your “Yield”. Sometimes there will be a sign as well, to emphasise the point, but a lot of times it is assumed you know that you need to yield because you are coming out of a side turning onto a more major road and then the road markings are supposed to be enough. The road markings also show WHERE you should yield or stop - sometimes it will be a distance back from the actual junction (or width restriction, or whatever) to allow space for large vehicles such as buses or trucks to get through safely from the other direction while you are stopped.

The “ZigZag” lines mean there is strictly no stopping in that area, unless you’re waiting in the normal traffic lane. This is to protect view the crossing from being obscured potentially causing a danger to pedestrians. These zig-zags are used instead of the double yellow lines (these mean no parking at any time) as loading/unloading commercial goods [amazon etc], taxis, disabled badge holders and emergency vehicles have an exception in law, and may park on double yellows as long as they don’t impede the flow of traffic. No vehicles can park/stop/wait on these lines. The only exception to this is an emergency vehicle attending an incident, but they must leave the blue lights on when parked. You will also find yellow zigzags outside of school entrances, these protect children as they may be obscured by vehicles parked at the entrance. Bonus fact: There are some (very rare) areas of the UK that have green speed limit signs (not red) these speeds are advisory as they either haven’t met the legal requirement for a speed reduction or the paperwork was deemed to expensive. The speed limit is the national (30,60 or 70) speed limit unless red signs also accompany it.

The bike thing that confused you is an advance cycle box. It’s so that cyclists can filter to the front of queuing traffic so that they’re more visible to oncoming drivers. You’re not supposed to stop in them on anything other than a pedal cycle but lots of people do. You’ll often get road markings with no sign on the pavement because the pavement nearby is too narrow for the pole or just because it’s considered unnecessary. If there’s both a sign and a road marking, you’re probably passing an accident black-spot. You can pick-up or drop-off a passenger on double-yellow lines, unless there are “no loading” marks on the pavement. You can’t park there and leave your vehicle though. The box junction markings are to stop people queuing across the junction and blocking the traffic coming the other way if the lights change. (You’ll also see them at level crossings and outside fire stations.) The advisory cycle lane means you can have your car in it (say if you’re in a wide vehicle, or you need to turn left across it, but that you have to give way to cyclists who are in the lane. (You also *must* give cyclists 1.5m when you pass them, even if they’re in a cycle lane.)

In some areas they put traffic cameras there, so if you block a box junction you will be sent a fine in the post. The local council chooses which box junction to put cameras on. So some councils put them on every one, while others put them on random ones where there have been issues.

With lines down the middle of the road, the simple way to remember it is, the more paint, the greater the hazard. Short white lines with big gaps indicates a low level of hazard, long lines with short gaps indicates a higher level, and solid lines indicates the highest level.

Yellow crossed lines in a box … do not enter the box …. Often there are cameras that check your registration number and you get fined later …
